Tron talks festivals, flip flips and mezcal ahead of Tribal Village

Hailing from Mexico City, Free-Spirit Records and Zer01 Music artist Patricio Tron has been perfecting his awesome blend of morning progressive and banging full on psychedelic trance since he first started out in 2000. Since then he’s had three epic albums under his belt – Existence (Liquid Records, 2006), Biologic (Liquid Records, 2009) and Boundless (Zer01, 2017) – and has played all over the globe, while building his Homegrown Audio Mastering Studio.
With Tron back in town for the first time in five years for the stunning Tribal Village at The Steelyard on Saturday night, we managed to get him to sit down long enough to answer a few questions for his fans!
Hey Patricio! Long time! Thanks for taking some time out to answer a few questions ahead of your trip to the UK!
Last time I interviewed you in Clapham in Summer 2011 you introduced me to the michelada, a Mexican beer and tomato cocktail that you said was your ‘favourite drink in the world’. Is this still the case or have your tastes changed over the last eightish years?
I still enjoy micheladas! Water is climbing up the list though as I'm getting a bit healthier than I was before.
Since then you’ve made some epic tracks and played at some amazing events and festivals. What have been the highlights of the last eight years for you?
Wooah eight years is a very long time. I’ve gotta say Ozora over the three years I was there. Boom 14, Maitreya14 and Jungala 17 been super-special. Modem is always an amazing experience.
Seekers and Sunshine festivals over in Japan and Gentenkaiki are truly something you don't see anywhere. The level of hospitality and thought they put into these events is really outstanding.
You’ve been producing trance for nearly 20 years. How has your sound grown over the last few years? Your music sounds like it’s only got more banging to me!
Thanks a lot!!! It’s what I’m trying to do – get a bit more energy on the dancefloor – and hopefully the sound is getting better too!! I've always just been doing things my way with not a lot of formula and I hope this essence keeps the same always.
Your Homegrown Audio Mastering studio looks like it’s very well kitted out. What sort of set up do you have at the moment?
Well for production I’ve got a variety of synths from moog phatty to access virus (an old classic), plus I’ve got a couple of waldorf for the digital side of things and micro korg, another formant filter for vocoding.
For mastering I’ve got neve2254 and a ssl 4000 series compressors and a sontec mep250 equaliser – all of which I built myself.
For the geeks reading this, what’s your favourite plug in or piece of kit right night? Or is that top secret?
Hehehe well I think serum is pretty much my mvp. I use a lot of fab filters. But I think my favourite piece of gear at this time has gotta be my oscilloscope. The geeks will have to agree!
What have you been cooking up in the studio recently?
There have been some rough times over the last couple of years in terms of real-life situations so I kinda went into solitude and kept in the studio for the better part of those years. More or less since the release of Boundless there have been constant improvements (or chasing my own tail sometimes…) XD.
Well, I was very happy with the success of the EP ‘Encrypted’ (released by Free-Spirit Records) and it hitting No. 2 on Beatport.
At the moment I’ve got a few releases lined up. I’m working on one for Alchemy and another for Sacred Technology, which we’re still working out the specifics of. Also coming up is a remix I did for the Killerwatts remix album.
I also have many tracks going on compilations for Free-Spirit Records and different labels like Blacklite and Grasshopper, as well as three projects growing quickly called Data Error (Zer01), Double Helix (Zer01/Grasshopper) and the Rave Commission. About 12 of us are involved in that!
Having played at so many events and festivals all over the planet, you must have experienced the best and the craziest our scene has to offer. I know what goes on tour is supposed to stay on tour, but what’s the funniest story you can share from life on the road?
I have seen a lot of tree hugging/climbing situations! Fortunately they’ve all gone right with no accidents involved XD. I’ve gotta say, the funniest and most wrecked always end up being the DJs. I won't mention any names, but once I saw a pair of my friends with one on the other’s shoulders running around the camp when the bottom fellow fell like a WWE wrestler and knocked the top fellow off the horse so to speak… On top of a TENT!!!
Thankfully nobody got hurt and no-one was in the tent at the time!!! Both of my friends are good and keep being friends; it was just a a severe case of Jägermeister on the plane!
Producing and playing music can be all-encompassing: what do you like to get up to in the limited down time you have?
I try to be with my family when I’ve got the time and energy. I play some video games when I need a distraction and hang out with my dog.
You’re headlining the Tribal Floor at Tribal Village in London on Saturday 18th of May. Will you be DJing or playing live?
I’ll be playing live.
What can readers expect from your set on Saturday night?
A world of new tracks.
After Tribal Village you’ve got some awesome summer festivals lined up. What are you looking forward to the most and why?
Ozora and Modem are always a highlight – I love them both! But this year I’ll come back to UK for the first time in well over 5 years. I’m also playing at Noisily, so I'm looking forward to that! The Antaris line-up looks really incredible too and the Germans know how to party. That’s really gonna be fun.
Outside of Europe, NYE is going to be at a very special place I'll be playing at, but I can't yet tell anyone yet!!!
As a festival veteran, what are the three things you’d never go to a festival without?
Well you need a lot of socks and flip-flops for sure. I wouldn't even think of going without my earplugs ever. It’s also very important to bring sunglasses and some common sense is to try and keep in the shade for good amounts of time and keep hydrated.
What else do you have on the horizon for planet Tron for the rest of the year?
I’m moving to Barcelona in a week so I expect a lot of changes that I can’t foresee – some super-fun times and also some challenging times probably also.
And now I’m in Europe, I also get some time to collaborate with my long-time mate, JourneyOM (Free-Spirit Records label owner) on some new tracks.
Finally, I’m still not convinced that beer and tomato juice are a good fit. Are there any other Mexican cocktails you can recommend?
My second favourite Mexican drink is just straight up mezcal. It’s smoky and delicious. But if you like beer and tequila you can sink a shot of tequila inside a pint of beer and it’s a submarine!
Many thanks for your time Patricio! Looking forward to seeing you at Tribal Village on Saturday night!
Thank you very much Tara, it’s always a pleasure. See you on Saturday!!
Tickets for Tribal Village featuring Alientatic, Clov, Cylon, Dickster, Foose, Keewl, Journey, Merlin's Apprentice and Tron on the Tribal Floor and Altered State, Bedders, Hamish, Miles From Anywhere, Miss Kiff, Neutrino and Spindrift from Furthur Progressions Music on the Village Floor were still available at the time of writing from Access All Areas.
