The Spin collective, who have made their name doing sellout parties at Brixton's infamous 414 venue, feel the time is right to unleash new label Spin Hard upon us, designed to showcase productions from their residents and further showcase the material which does the damage at their parties.
It's a brave move, especially considering the state of the vinyl market at current, but with three established producers on the first release, Spin are clearly pulling out the stops to stamp their authority on the market.
First up is 'Shaky Ground', a collaboration between Passion records artist Kam-Pain, and BPM resident Rockin' Russ. As to be expected, it's an excursion into the filthier side of hard house with a ferocious rolling bassline, nefarious sawtooth synths and gnarling leads. The hook comes from an Afrika Bambaata vocal sample which is timestretched in the breakdown to maximum effect for full dancefloor impact. Not innovative, but then this isn't for the chin-strokers - it's solid, heads-down dancefloor fodder firmly for the end of the night.
The flip sees Dan Dyson bring us 'Disco Inferno'. Featuring Dan's trademark razor-sharp kick drum & offbeat bass combination, it twists through some neat fills and synth work before unleashing 303s and hectic riffs aplenty. Again, this isn't innovative stuff and does unfortunately sound dated, but then the audience just isn't going to care about that when this tune is dropped - they'll just want to 'ave it.
Fairly run of the mill and not tremendously inspiring, but certainly better than 90% of the current hard house output and a solid start for Spin Hard.
Available from Mid September.
