Kuffdam & Plant

Label: Six:thirty
Format: CD
Genre: Trance

John Steven & Yiannis Roberto who make up Kuffdam & Plant, are a breath of fresh air on the trance scene. I’ve been hooked since their early releases like Balearica on 020 records, and Seduction on John 00 Flemming’s JOOF label last year, which sat firmly at no.1 for me as "tune of the year".

Their tracks are complicated! Usually with multiple layers of melody, intricate percussion and soaring chords. For me its these subtle nuances on offer set them a step above many other trance producers. I’ve been waiting for this one with baited breath…

The Original mix eases into things with purely a percussion line…initially sounding as gentle as anything until a positively thumping kick drum takes over. Flavoured with intermittent squelches from the 303, more percussion and a gentle choral vocal in the background, the tune then gathers further intensity at an early break out of which the main melody is introduced. However it’s at the 2nd break where you find myself truly hooked…the initial hints of melody are given free reign and up she soars! Glorious stuff!

Flip it over, (I must stop using that expression for CDs Laughs out loud) and label manager Ian Betts takes to the helm for the remix. Ian drops the percussive intro for a more DJ friendly b-line start, but does not hold back on the little extras that I personally believe are the difference between a good track and a great one. The melody from the original is more of less retained, but with a slight vibrato effect added, and there’s just the one break making this perhaps the option for the less patient of dance floors. All in all, super stuff, Ian’s productions just keep getting better, this track has so much going on, and you can see why there is so much excitement surrounding Mr Betts these days!

This is the strongest release yet from Six:thirty in my mind…and is due for release this month on vinyl, and as a digital download, from your friendly local music emporium!

Wicked tune.... comes under my "melancoly epic trance" bracket. (which is a compliment)
