TimeLock — the new wave of psy trance

One of the new breed of cutting edge psy trance producers coming out of Israel, TimeLock aka Felix Nagorsky is on fire at the moment. After releasing his first artist album on BNE in 2005 — ‘Power Charge’ — he followed it up in 2006 with an incredible compilation, ‘Advance Options’. Now he’s working on a new album, in between playing at some of the top psy trance parties around the world and creating a mysterious new project. Combining psy trance with his love of electro, TimeLock’s influence is obviously widespread, as many of his contemporaries are now imitating his unique electro psy trance sound. HarderFaster was given the rare opportunity to pose some questions to the man himself ahead of his forthcoming live set at the Antiworld International Indoor Festival…
Your real name is Felix Nagorsky but you first started producing under the name ‘PPS Project’ with Black and White’s Samuel Valerstein. What did ‘PPS Project’ stand for and why did you leave it behind? And why the name ‘TimeLock’ now?
PPS Project was a big part of the beginning of my musical life and it just stopped because me and Samuel decided to go our different ways and we wanted to work separately. Basically it was just the end of one step and the start of a new step in our music. So I started TimeLock...
You’re originally from Russia but now live in Israel. For those reading this who don’t know you, how did this come about? Where did you grow up? Were you a musical kid or was it something that came to you later?
I was born in Russia and my parents moved with me to Israel when I was aged ten. I played the piano from the age of seven and the guitar for five years... so I was born with music in my veins.
How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before? Has your sound changed much since you’ve started producing your own tracks?
Of course it’s changed. It’s become more mature, more complex. Now I know what I’m doing when I’m in the studio. My music is a fusion of different styles and directions in electronica... powerful house and electro influenced psy trance.
You’ve been producing music since 1997. What inspired you to start making music?
I had a rock band before and then I started to dig electronic music, so I moved in this direction and started to produce electronic music.
You incorporate a lot of electro into your psy trance, which a lot of artists are now imitating by jumping on the electro psy bandwagon. What influences over the years have made you follow this path?
Electro has a lot of power and depth. I love it so I’m combining it with trance.
You joined the BNE stable in 2005, putting you in the same league as psy trance legends like Infected Mushroom, Oforia, Astral Projection, and many more. It must be a compliment to be working with those at the top of their game?! Are there any of your fellow BNE colleagues in particular that you respect and admire?
It’s a big pleasure to work with the biggest names on the same label. I have respect for the other artists on BNE, but the biggest respect goes to Infected Mushroom and Oforia.
Your remix of Infected Mushroom’s ‘Cities of the Future’ was released on their ‘Stretched’ EP and really put you on the international psy trance map. Do you prefer to remix tracks or write you own?
I prefer to make my own music because like this I get full satisfaction of what I’m doing...but making remixes is a lot of fun and also you can bring some of your style into the other artist’s track. Like I did with Oforia’s ‘Return of the Machines’: my remix gave another concept to the track and that’s what I like doing.
Your second album and first real solo artist album ‘Time Lock’ was released in November 2005 and when I first heard it earlier this year I thrashed it for days. Did it take long for you to put it together? I hear you worked on the whole thing by yourself in your home studio, this must’ve been incredibly difficult?!
It was fun and a lot of work. I tried to make my best for the listeners and the crowd on the dancefloor... I did the album for about 9 month and I’m satisfied with what became of it.
What software and hardware do you prefer to use in your home studio?
I use various programs and also hardware like access virus. I use cubase for producing.
With 2006 over, have you made any New Year’s resolutions? What goals do you have for 2007? And beyond?
I’m working on my new album that is half way through completion. It will be released in May 2007 on BNE/Yoyo. I’m also starting to work on another project… there’ll be more info about that soon.
You’ve toured the world playing your music. Do you have a favourite place out of all the countries you’ve played in? And is there anywhere you haven’t visited yet where you’d really like to play?
The place I like to play most is Brasil. The crowd has so much energy there it’s unbelievable. I like to play in Japan and Russia. These countries also have an amazing vibe.
I would like to play at in the USA to see how it is there. I’ve heard that the scene is growing there. I’ll do it very soon.
The final track on ‘Power Charge’, ‘Un:Balanced’ was a collaboration with June Rashva and was considered an anthem of the summer of 2005. What do you think makes a good track an anthem?
Something that you can remember from a track, something that makes you keep it in your mind for a long time. It can be due to a lot of things like vocals, samples and more...
Earlier this year you compiled the first edition of BNE’s ‘Advanced Options’ series. With so much good psy trance on BNE, it must’ve been difficult to put the album together. How did you choose the tracks?
For me it was not so difficult. I had some music available from artists that I like and I just went with the flow. I took what I was thinking will fit with my taste of sound and music and production and it became a very good compilation.
What up and coming djs and producers do you have your ear on at the moment?
There is a lot of music coming from Israel and other countries these days and while not everything has potential, there are definitely some very promising acts like Basic, Krunch, Ace Ventura and Ecliptic.
Music is your full time job. If you weren’t making music, what else do you think you’d be doing?
I have an economics and management degree, so would probably be sitting in some factory now in an office — and that’s sounds a bit boring! At least at this point in my life...
What’s your current top tracks to get the dancefloor moving?
TimeLock — ‘Rocketman’
1200 mics — ‘Mescaline’ (Astrix remix)
Oforia — ‘Return of the Machines’ (Time Lock remix)
Domestic vs Xnoize — ‘Non Human’
Space Cat — ‘Hear the Voice’
Basic — ‘Sync’
Timelock vs Quantum — ‘Punchline’
Infected Mushroom — ‘Becoming Insane’
Robbie Williams — ‘Rudebox’
You’re coming to the UK to play at the last ever Antiworld Indoor Festival on Saturday 3 February 2007. Have you played in the UK before?
Yes I played a year ago in at an Antiworld event in London and it was most amusing. I can’t wait to come back!
Will you be checking out anything else in London or just focussing on the gig?
Actually, I wanted very much to go to a football game, but the London team that I love is playing out of London, so think I will stay to watch the game in my hotel.
What can your fans expect from a TimeLock Live set?
I will play material from my upcoming album, so watch out for some surprises....

After the incredible sell out session that had The Coronet rocking to its foundations, Antiworld is already building towards another huge party in one of London’s biggest venues. Starting the most exciting time yet for all involved, the sights now are set on the mammoth 070707 festival which is already one of the most talked about events happening next year. But before that Antiworld returns to the SEone Complex, one of the flagship venues over the last 4 years of outstanding parties, for the 15th and very last time and the final gathering under one roof too.
For those interested in some figures, how about this: The Winter Edition will have 5 rooms of music, 80 artists and 3000 clubbers descending upon the SEOne with music ranging from psy trance and progressive psychedelic techno through to hard trance, techno, acid techno, chill out and so much more.
