Tribal preview with label super-boss Nadi

For a man who spends all his time immersed in music, Nadi is tough to pin down. When we finally managed to do so, we wanted to find out all about the styles his three labels encompass and the direction that artists in the psy-trance scene are taking globally.
Together with his colleagues Huda G (who will be flying in from Israel for his first ever exclusive UK gig!), Buju and Zeon, the boys are making a huge impact on the progressive trance scene worldwide, and are all brought together for the first time for this special event. Get an insight into the Ear Peaks Label Group and see what we can look forward to from the big man down at Tribal this Friday 18th August.
Hi there Nadi! For those unfamiliar with Domo Recs and Ear Peaks, describe the style and sound of your releases.
Domo Records is a label dealing with a style defined as progressive trance or better still, psy-progressive trance. It’s mostly uplifting day time music, always dance floor orientated, with the speed normally running between 133-140 BPM. It has the highest definitions of quality possible in sound and cover design (at least to our measures).
Domo is now part of a new label group called Ear Peaks Music. Other labels in the group are:
Tupan Records: dealing with tribal progressive music (a blend of trance and house music). Tupan will be working in cooperation with a branch in Brazil run by DJ Lennox.
Gat Music: a chill out/lounge/freestyle/electro/dub label, dealing with the easier side of electronic music, mostly easy listening and communicative music.
Ear Peaks Music: the ‘mother label’ is going to deal with general releases within the electronic music world, which are not necessarily connected to a specific genre but reflect innovation in their own style. There are many innovative projects currently being planned.
All your releases seem to have a sound that is uniquely Domo. Can you tell me a bit about the direction Domo takes when choosing its artists?
Well from the beginning we tried to somehow give our own perspective of the music we like and to put our trade mark on our releases, but in the same time be updated with the global development of the scene. We were immediately connected to the Swiss sound which attracted us with its heavy percussions and fat sound and naturally we decided to push to this direction.
If you are familiar with our catalogue you can see that our sound, like our dj sets and music choice, evolved since the first CD release — ‘Travelocity’, to a more uplifting groovy sound. Today our sound is less minimal, since it started to bore us as djs also, and our artists evolved too in this direction, so this progress is quite demanded.
Which artists are now signed or working with Domo? Who are the sounds to look out for?
Our current exclusive artists are: French Sensifeel, who released his debut album some months ago and is constantly working to develop his unique sound; Swiss boys Insane creation, and V tunes who are going to release their awaited debut albums next on Domo; and a new Israeli group called Quantise, who are currently working to establish their musical direction, but have a lot of talent and will be a big surprise soon in my opinion.
Other than these, we have artists who are working non-exclusively with us, like Sonnenvakuum/Sonic Cube from Switzerland, who is going to release his second album in Domo in the winter; Swiss Liquid Soul, who is going to be the biggest surprise of the near future with his pumping uplifting style; Israel’s Ace Ventura, Yoni Oshrat, who is half of Psysex of Hommega fame, who is now developing his own perception of progressive music in a very cool way, and many more really . . .
Prog. trance works really well indoors at any time of a party. When does it work best at outdoor events?
In my opinion, today’s progressive music is divided to 2 sub genres, the more housy style and the more trancy one. The first one fits mostly to the late afternoon hours in an outdoor party, while the second one will fit perfectly from 10:00 AM onwards. Today’s progressive music is mainly daylight music and sounds perfect in those hours outdoor, as well as indoor of course, at almost any given time.
What do you think of the state of the trance scene globally at the moment? Do you think it’s healthy?
Well this question has two sides really: the industry side and the party side. Industry-wise, it’s quite clear the big fall which has passed us in the last two years has died down a bit, leaving the market more or less stabilized in its new limits. These are much lower than before, but at least don’t deteriorate anymore, thus allowing labels to calculate their moves and investments more wisely and maybe manage to survive after all. Happily enough this fall has changed the artists too, so that they can understand that the status of the labels has changes and needs new adjustments in regards to payments and conditions to release tracks, otherwise they will be left completely unemployed. This caused a relatively sane industry with much lower sales, but also more realistic investments from labels allowing them to keep on operating.
Party-wise it’s a different story I guess. Not influenced by CD selling, the trance party scene is an established scene in Israel and west Europe, especially in Germany and Switzerland. The scoundrels and greedy bustards are still there of course in big masses as well as the good hearted organizers, who are doing their best to make a party out of love and good will. In the end it depends what one is searching for in a party, as opposed to the offers in this country . . . I can go on for ages about that but I guess there’s a need for a complete interview on this subject.
Name some top artists that have hugely influenced your dj style over the years.
There are djs who influenced me with their mixing skills such as Axel, Miko (California Sunshine), James Monroe, Tsuyoshi and more, and there are artists such as X dream, Atmos, Ticon, Son Kite, Vibrasphere, Paste, XV Kilist, Sven Snug and many more who shaped my style along the 14 years I’ve been playing.
Name some new upcoming prog artists to watch out for.
Oh, that’s easy! The most talented artists I’ve heard lately are V Tunes (they’ve got an album on Domo soon), Liquid Soul (Iboga), Ace Ventura (Iboga), Cafu (Plusquam) and Shuma, who’ve for their debut album on Tupan records later on this year.
You have relocated to London lately. Is this to be closer to the huge prog scene in Europe?
Definitely! Although the German scene has dropped a bit of its intensity and power its still one of the biggest in the world, while the Swiss and British scenes are gaining more and more momentum currently. Europe is definitely the best place to be for a proggy lover and naturally a leading proggy label, not to mention the biggest and most intensive summer festival season in the world.
How do you find new artists?
Mostly by recommendations from fellow artists or acquaintances from the scene. I hardly find surprising material from demos sent by mail without prior discussions, but I anyway answer everyone who send me music, sometimes with a negative answer but always trying to give proper feedback for them to improve, since it could be also to my advantage if they do and a new star is born . . .
What future releases are in the pipeline?
On Domo Records we have the following:
DOMOCD009 — V tunes – Variable (SEP/2006)
DOMOCD010 — V/A Compiled by DJ Assaf (JAN/2007)
On Tupan:
TUPANCD002 — V/A Vinyl Rules (FEB/2007)
TUPANCD003 — Mirowsky debut album (APR/2007)
Gat Music:
GATCD001 — V/A Compiled by Rastalion
GATCD002 — Zohar Album (name TBA) (APR/2007)
On Ear Peaks some very surprising projects are in the pipeline and as soon as they are confirmed we’ll naturally update on the matter.
And finally what can we expect from your set at Tribal?
Well you can definitely expect some funky chunky sexy sleazy beats to make the girlies melt and keep the boys drooling. And a bit more seriously . . . me and my colleagues Buju, Huda G (who will be playing his first ever UK set!!) and Zeon are gonna present the whole spectrum of Tupan Records and our upcoming releases covering tribal house, electro house and chunky breaks to fit the environment of Tribal!
Thank you Nadi! See you at Tribal!
