Insekt preview: interview with Dynamic Intervention

Reported by Toomz / Submitted 17-05-05 14:16

Possibly the most prolific producer, remixer and engineer in the hard dance scene today, Dynamic Intervention, AKA Mik Cree, certainly knows his way around the studio. Having set up his own label DIP Recordings in the late 90s, it wasn’t long until the name Dynamic Intervention was springing up on a vast plethora of labels, including Aztec, Bulletproof Records, E-Traxx, Honey Pot Recordings, Katalyst Trax, Mohawk Records, Public House, Recharge, Recover and Tidy Trax. More recently, often with studio partner Justin Bourne, Dynamic Intervention has had a string of releases on the A-list hard house labels: Short Circuit, Tripoli Trax and Vicious Circle Recordings. You would struggle to find a hard house lover’s vinyl collection not containing one of his tracks.

We caught up with Mik in a rare interview, to find out a bit more about the man behind the alias, ahead of his exciting appearance at the forthcoming May Insekt.

Hi Mik. Despite your immense involvement in the scene over the years, you still remain to be quite a mystery to some people. Tell us 3 things we would not know about Mr Cree?

1. Before I did this, I was the South West’s premier termite farmer.
2. I’m completely bald and actually wear a wig.
3. I’m a compulsive liar.

How did you become interested/involved in the industry all those many moons ago? Did you ever imagine it would bring such success?

I played bass and guitar in bands as a teenager, which was my first involvement in the music industry. Later on as I went to clubs and raves more, I decided that I wanted to make electronic music.

Although I have always worked hard on my productions and hoped for some success, I never imagined that I would have the continued success that I’ve had.

Is there a story behind the name Dynamic Intervention & do you have any other aliases that you work under?

I needed a new artist name as a label wanted to sign some tracks from me at the time and they didn’t like the name that I was using. I got some mates to have a brainstorming session in the pub one night and Dynamic Intervention was the best name that came up.

I’ve recorded a few tracks under the Modulas alias and have also co-written a lot of tunes that I didn’t appear on as an artist.

Who or what inspires you when making a track? What certain ingredients are essential for the Dynamic Intervention sound?

I get inspiration from new tracks that I’m hearing across the hard dance spectrum, also from some of the people that I work with.

The essential ingredients for the Dynamic Intervention sound are a fat bunch of samples, a Juno and ES2 synth and of course, a 303.

Have you ever been tempted to try your hand at techno during the current trend, or is it strictly hard house/NRG?

I’ve just made a techno and an acid techno tune with Iain and Ron from Mobile Dogwash. I’m really pleased with both tracks and we’ve already had an offer from Skankadelic and Acid Test for the acid tune, so it should be released soon.

What other styles of music are you into?

Techno, acid techno, house, trance, psy trance, breakbeat, drum & bass, and
bluegrass banjo classics!

Out of the many over the years, with who has been you favourite collaboration partner & why?

I don’t think that I could pick one person, as there have been so many good collaborations over the years. I would have to mention Sol Ray and Justin Bourne though, just for the amount, and consistency of tracks written with these guys.

What is your favourite track you have been involved in?

It’s too hard to pick one. ’Full Throttle’ and ‘The Truth’ are the ones that I’ve played out the most.

Take us through a typical day in the studio with Mik Cree.

Feed the chimps, tell them what sort of tune I want, lock them in the studio, go to the pub.

What exciting projects have you been involved in recently & do you have anything interesting in the pipeline?

Ask the chimps.

Where else can clubbers hear the Dynamic Intervention sound in the coming months? Do you have any tours planned in the UK or abroad?

Insekt and Bedlam in London, Underground City, Blue, Men @ Work and Bubble Club in Birmingham, Noggins in Sheffield, Free Party’s S.West and a tour of Australia in July.

Having collaborated on many tunes with Justin Bourne, have you ever taken the work of the studio into the clubs for back-to-back DJ specials, and if so how did it go?

We’ve only played back to back once before; a few years back at Tasty’s launch party. It was good from what I remember.

Having been a cornerstone in the NRG/Hard House field for many a year, how did it feel to hook up with another in Captain Tinrib on ‘Found What We’re Looking 4’ & who won the battle to be in control of the mouse?

It was great to get to work with the Captain at last, as I’ve been in to his stuff for years. We did the track at his studio so he was at the controls a lot of the time; I took over for a few hours here and there.

You live in Bristol, which still has its links to the underground free party scene, have you experienced many of theses as a DJ or clubber?

Yes, and that’s partly why I like living here. There’s usually a lot of free parties going on, especially in the summer when they are mainly outdoors. I get to play at a few which is good and it beats being in a sweaty club on a hot summer’s night.

With a string of recent releases on Vicious Circle and the mammoth forthcoming track ‘24 Hours’, what other new & exciting tracks can we expect to hear at this months Insekt?

- '24 Hours' as you mentioned which is Sol Ray & myself and forthcoming on E-Traxx.
- 'Trauma' – Morgan & myself / 'Burnout' – Ben Stevens & myself on DIP.
- My remix of 'Flymo – Necrophilia' on Corrupted.
- Marc Johnson & my remix of 'OD404 – Biofilter' on Flashpoint.
- Justin Bourne & my remix of 'Casper – Oh Yeah' on Passion.
- Justin Bourne & my remix of 'Marc Johnson & DMF – Kick Ass Elements' on Flashpoint.
- Simon Eve & myself 'No Turning Back' on Recharge.

Vicious Circle have recently taken upon managing DIP for you, how did this all come about?

Alphamagic were distributing DIP, and when they went bust Paul Glazby asked me if I would like Vicious to manage the label and sort out the distribution. Considering the enormous success that he’s had with Vicious, I thought that it would be a great idea. So far so good.

With vinyl sales in a plummet as the scene is in a critical stage, how do you see a way forward so many independent labels can survive and not die by the wayside? Are digital downloads the future?

It’s a tricky one this. I think that a lot of people thought that the drop in vinyl sales could be made up by selling downloads of the same releases. This, I gather from talking to other labels doesn’t seem to be the case. I think that once a track can be downloaded, it’s then too easy for it to be shared about between people leaving small mp3 profits and actually making vinyl sales worse. I personally am only offering my deleted back catalogue as downloads at the moment.

I think a lot of labels have tightened their belts and are pretty much doing it for the love of it already, so the next year will be critical to whether they survive or not. I am however trying to keep positive and find it encouraging that there are new labels starting all the time who are doing it because they love the scene and are willing to loose their own money if they have too.

Catch Mik, along with Karim, Marc Johnson, James Nardi, George E and more at Insekt 21st May 05.
