» Fine Day/Unique

Reviewed by Bagel / Submitted 25-01-03 20:23

Label: Above The Sky records
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: Trance, Hard Trance

The A side features “Fine Day” an uplifting vocal trancer that’s actually a rework of an old time trance classic. Starting with a slightly Ferry Corsten-esque pumping yet floaty beat, Mat adds his own special touch with a few light layers of percussion and the occasional powerful stab of synths to build into the man breakdown. Featuring the original sweetly soft vocal: “Its going to be a fine night tonight…” each repeated cycle of the vocal a has a new level of intensity added with background chords….before the final snare and a kick into the main riff. Fine day never really jumps, but rather drifts along in it’s own magical way and would make an excellent track earlier in the night to build up a set.

The power of this release is on the flip… “Unique”…an utterly massive driving hard trancer! Starting with a rich and full kickdrum, upon which countless layers of complex percussion are gradually added until the even thicker main beat kicks in with Mat’s custom styled synth layers building into the first break. The break is far from simple, at first one layer of soft chords and an acoustic guitar or two. Then, more chords and an unusual male vocal (I say unusual because in trance you rarely seem to hear a male vocal sounding good!) building into a complex pattern of synths, that peak twice in false builds ups before at last releasing the main riff in an utterly euphoric onslaught of multi-layered synths stabs that give riff a complicated “Statico” effect. The track then rolls on to yet another breakdown and build up before finally thumping its way to the end…leaving you in a heap in the corner!

Immaculately produced. All in all, a fine day and a fine record, get it while you can as I gather these are limited. Wink
