What do you call a DJ who is compared to Wayne Rooney? What do call a DJ who makes "DJ technology" look useless? What do you call a DJ who, by the end of the year, could be up there with the big names in hard house? DJ Kutski, that’s what you call him..... So we called him to find out a little more....
Kutski, I can't keep calling you that - what’s your real name, where you from and what you on?
Why not? I think Kutski's quite funky! My real name is John, and I live 'oop norf' in the lovely city of Chester... yes Holyoaks!!
Any relation to Normski (the really annoying 90’s TV presenter)?
No relation, it's just as he's probably been one of the most influential figures in my career so far I decided to name my self after him ;o)
You seem to have come from nowhere, 9 months ago I had not heard of you, how have you got to where you are so quickly?
I've actually been playing out since '99! It's just as my style is very underground orientated, I’d never really made any big waves in the media or anything like that! Over the last 12 months or so, I’ve been given the opportunity to bring my sound to a lot of big name clubs around the country, which has been a great platform to build my reputation!! I've also been given a lot of exposure from some big name jocks who seem to have taken a shine to what I’m doing, such as Billy Bunter and Anne Savage. You know, name dropping in interviews etc, all helps get my name out there and stick in peoples minds.
You hear stories about scratch DJ’s locking themselves in their rooms for years to perfect certain techniques – is this the case for you?
Ha! That’s actually not far from the truth at all! I've been obsessive about music from as far back as I can remember, so as soon as I’d managed to get my grubby mitts on a record player it seemed the natural thing to do to lock my self away and learn how to get the most from it!! Then when I rustled up enough cash for 1210's I waved goodbye to the usual teenage social life, and learned how to caress a record to make that make sweet sounds instead
Do you use any of the new DJ Tools? IE Effects units, Final Scratch, CDJ’s?
Not really. I play around with bit's at home, but I have a phobia of CD players in clubs. I know vinyl has its negatives, but I know how to deal with it. If a CD player starts going schizo, who's to say what it's going to do next! (Paranoid , I know) They’re handy for playing tracks straight from the studio, but to be honest, these days everyone seems obsessed with trying to get FX or fancy CD players to do impressive tricks for them, when they've only really scratched the surface of what possible with a traditional DJ set up. Most of the so called ‘new effects’ available on CD players and mixers today, such as looping, phasing, delay, cue points, originated with hip hop back in the late 70's, and were performed using 2 copies of the same record and a sh1t load of practice and dedication to perfect it!! But no one out side the turntablist scene seemed remotely interested in any of this until it was available at the touch of a button!
But back to the point, I’m gonna stick with two turntables and a mixer, and when I’ve taken them to the limit I’ll think about adding something new to the equation!

Where have you been playing recently, what’s been the highlight?
I've had a lot of really good gigs over the summer! I played last set of the Ripsnorter boat party which was awesome! I've played Garlands, Frantic, Hard House Academy, ROAR, which where all incredible gigs, but the personal highlight for me was the live p.a. with Bunter, CLSM, and Whizzkid in the hardcore room at Tasty. Billy Bunter and Jon Doe have been an influential figures to me since the mid 90's, so be involved in a live act with them both was one of them moments you have to take a step back and look at what you've achieved.
Have you been doing anything in the studio??
Yeah, I’ve been quite busy actually! "Closer to God", the first track Roosta and myself did is released on X-Ite this month. We also have a couple more tracks bubbling under too, such as "Acid Imagination" which I think will be big! I've recently been over to Germany to do a track with Oliver Goedicke and Frank Sieben, which was a great opportunity to do a track that reflects my darker euro side.
I've also been busy with Nick and Jake (Vinylcoup) under our SPX guise. We have another Hip Hop E.P. in the works as a follow up to the "Supa No Dead" E.P. and a funky ass breakbeat track with loads of scratches, raps, and cheeky samples which is sounding damn fine!!
Whats it like working with the those guys??
Working with Roost is awesome! I'd been a big fan of his work since "414 All", so it was a proper honour when he invited me down to his studio! Musically, with hard trance, we have a lot in common, and everything we've done so far I’ve been well chuffed with. We have some more projects in the pipeline too, so watch this space!!
The Germany thing came about because myself and Ollie (one half of Warp Brothers) are both under Fresh Management, Ollie heard some of my stuff, was impressed and invited me over! I was a little nervous to be honest as wasn't to sure what to expect, or what they where expecting from me, but when I got over there I had a great time! Ollie and Frank are both really top guys, and excellent producers, so it was an amazing opportunity really, that resulted in a quality track!
Working with Nick and Jake is always great! They were the first people to ever get me in the studio (which resulted in "Makin Me Itch"). We all have our own directions in music which seems to be a good formula as all the tracks we've done, from hip hop to hard dance, have been very well received!
Where can we catch you over the next few weeks??
