Lorenzo Barrero aka Psyrenzo has been a firm fixture on the London Underground Club scene for almost two decades! If you've been around the scene during the last 20 years you'll have most likely bumped into Lorenzo whether it's DJing, Promoting or PARTYING! Excited to play his debut set at the legendary Tribal Village this Friday 14 January 2022 - we grabbed him for a quick chinwag!

How do you feel your childhood helped shape who you are today?

I feel I learnt a lot from my childhood days when I was living with my Mum. From the moment I was born right through to my adult years my Mum taught me everything! From the basic stuff like cleaning, cooking, brushing my teeth (hehe) through to being a decent person. As the years progressed, her influence helped me grow in confidence and I always felt fully supported, right through to the time when I started living independently. I learnt so much from my Mum during my childhood. Now I'm an adult I've learnt that we can never know everything and even now I learn new things every day. I like this as knowing that there's so much new stuff to look forward to learning - it makes every day a blessing.

What is your earliest memory of music?

The first and best memory would be way before I had even thought about DJing. From my early teens I used to go to Tower Records and HMV in the West End of London to buy CD albums and charted music. I had no clue during these days about Trance related genres and sub genres of Trance until my late teens, when then I discovered Kiss 100FM and Radio 1.

Talk us through your musical career, how did it start?

It all started in the late nineties, from purchasing a DJ in the box package, which included 2 amplified speakers, a 2-channel mixer, headphones and 2 Numark belt drive turntables. I used to practice a lot, putting in 2-3 hours a night. A few months later I really started to get into it. My Mum had a friend who was a DJ and she mentioned me, saying how keen I was to learn the skills further. So I started linking up with him every fortnight for lessons. The lessons and practice enabled me to move up a level. When I was old enough to go to clubs I would always start of having mix session on my decks with a few beers beforehand - it would always help get me in the party mood! I was buying around 10-20 records per week from various record outlets. I started buying a mixture of genres, from Trance through to Hard Trance. My first gig (in a London bar) was most probably one of my favourite ever! I was so excited for the future!

Who/what are your biggest influences and inspirations?

To be honest I have never actually thought I had any specific influences. I was just always so keen and excited to go out to parties, at various venues - listen to different genres of music and enjoy everyone I saw playing, listening and dancing to the DJ's sets. If I liked a particular track, I would tune in to the radio shows the following week, hoping that the tune I heard the previous weekend would get a play. I would then take a note of that tune and wait for its release date, before going out and buying it and adding it to my growing collection. Smile

What has been the highlight of your musical career so far?

It's hard to choose one - but it would have to be between: playing at PSYMERA 4th Birthday in October 2019 and playing my first international gig in Sweden at Blood Moon, Lund in February 2020. Both of those parties were well and truly epic, with an awesome vibe. The reaction from the Psymera ravers when my last tune had finished was a memory I shall never forget!! Sweden was a memorable party also and was a quality weekend away. From the moment I lifted off from the London airport, to when I touched down in London a couple of days later. I would love to go back there and play there again; maybe one day. In general, there have been so many memorable sets I have played and for many other brands! If you show the ravers on the dancefloor that you are having fun, smiling and with good energy behind the decks the crowd will react back to you - this is momentous!

What has been a lowlight of your musical career?

Unfortunately, there have been quite a few. The closure of Club 414, Brixton in May 2019 was major. I was an in-house promoter for my brand TRANCElucid (Trance & Psy Trance) hosting parties between 2015 and 2019. I also looked after Magnetix (before TRANCElucid) between 2010 and 2013. The venue held a very special place in my heart, it was practically my 2nd home, going there pretty much every weekend, playing countless DJ sets there, right back since my first ever gig in 2003. The people and the Clubbers there were pretty much like my second family.

Another lowlight was playing in the Baby Box at Ministry of Sound one time. I was playing a B2B set with a very good friend of mine Chris Dell and after 20 seconds in of our first track security told us we had to turn the music off as they were closing the room. That was really gutting!

The final one and one which will always be a huge downer is pulling out of sets due to ill health. This is absolutely gutting and it hits hard as usually nearer to the day of the gig you get more excited but when you're still feeling ill and not yet recovered you feel so down. I have learnt though that you have to put health first.

What other work do you do apart from music?

I am a support worker, escorting people of various ages on public transport. They may have learning disabilities and just need some support getting from A-B. I try to help them in becoming independent again so they can safely travel alone.

How do you think your friends would describe you?

My friends tell me that I am very loyal.

What are your biggest loves, other than music?

Watching football matches, whether that be at games or on the television. I also enjoy good food, eating (hehe), playing on the Playstation and the most enjoyable one is getting into bed after a big long night out!

What are your biggest dislikes in life?

Politics and seeing hate speech online. I feel we should respect each other more, accept different people for who they are and just be kind to each other.

What are your hopes, dreams and plans for the future?

After some ill health, I'm hoping to get better and be back up and running this year to relaunch TRANCElucid. During these times it's been really tough to find a suitable venue, but I'm really hoping that things will get back on track and return to full normality - events, gigging and partying once again!

What words of wisdom can you give to aspiring artists?

Never give up.

You’re playing at the legendary Tribal Village event on 14th January 2022! What does this mean to you and what can people expect from your set?

You know, I've been really looking forward to this one for a long, long while. I feel honoured to have been asked to play and thrilled ever since then. I love the vibe of this party, the people are awesome and the music is always top notch. With this massive night having two rooms of quality music, we're going to be spoilt for choice! Hmmm... Set wise I am opening up the night, playing the main room and spinning many top Progressive Psy-Trance tunes that are guaranteed to get people dancing. Tribal Village is my first Progressive set in a few years. I'm a little nervous, with it being my Debut set for Tribal Village, but most importantly I am very excited. So be sure to come down early to hear me and enjoy! :-)
