Andy Farley & BK - secret cheesy music fans - play Abba this Xmas.

Reported by saffysue / Submitted 10-12-08 16:43

BK and Andy Farley have been making and playing music since before most of us were old enough to get into clubs! (Well, maybe not quite that long, but you get the idea) But do you know what their festive plans are and what they’d do if they were women?

What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not DJing?

Ben: Rest my ears and see friends and family. But mostly it’s spent in the studio working on new projects.

Andy: Go to the gym, chill and listen to music, or play on my Playstation

If you were given the choice between living without music or living without that favourite thing, what would you choose and why?

Ben: I’d tell who ever gave me that choice to fuck off! There is no way I’m choosing between my family and music it would be like losing a limb!

Andy: Living without that favourite thing because music holds so many special memories. Music can instantly transport you back to a time and a place so I couldn’t live without it

People think DJing is a glamorous career but there’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes. What are the downsides to working in this industry?

Ben: Glam it’s not. I work pretty much 7 days a week and have done for all of my working life. The travelling is the biggest downside, driving up and down the UK’s motorways and living out of suitcases, eating airport food.

We usually only get to stay a matter of hours in each country we visit so although it sounds glam when you say you played in Canada at the weekend the reality is usually like this:

Get up 6am and drive to the airport
Fly 12 hours to Canada
Go from airport to hotel and have about three hours to chill before you DJ
Go to the gig and play (that’s the good bit!) Back to the hotel to have about two hours kip before getting up and flying to the next city
Then do all that again followed by a 12 hour flight home
Get home Sunday night then back in the studio on Monday morning

But how ever tiring it is that 2-hr gig in the middle of it all makes it all worthwhile!

Andy: The music industry can be very underhand at times, both as a DJ and a producer. Quite often you can do a gig and then not get paid for it. I also had a pretty traumatic experience with a certain agency who collected my DJ monies and then took months to pay it to me and when I left them I didn’t get paid the outstanding money that I was owed.

From a producer aspect, the digital side of things has had a huge impact, vinyl sales are very poor now and sadly there doesn’t seem to be much of a future left for that as a format, and digital whilst providing some level of return does not really give the bonuses that record sales did say six years ago.

Having said all that one of the big lessons you learn early on as a DJ is to rise above all the negative stuff otherwise you’ll never enjoy what you’re doing!

Obviously a question that’s touched a nerve with both of you. Something more cheerful - what kind of mischief will you be getting up to over the festive period? What will you be doing on Christmas day, and what’s your gig schedule like?

Ben: It’s my first Christmas with my daughter so am taking time to do the whole family thing this year and not going to play on Boxing Day. New Year’s Eve/Day I have 3 gigs on.

Andy: Hectic through the first part of December. I’m doing a four date tour of New Zealand and Australia. I get back on the Thursday, then have HDS on the Friday of course, Riff Raff in Leeds & B2T in Birmingham on the Saturday. Then Christmas Day I’ll be spending time with my family. For the first time in probably ten years or more I have Boxing Day off and I can’t wait. My first gig after that will be Hook’d at Union on Sunday morning 28th.

As two of the biggest legends in the scene, what is it that you think makes hard dance constantly defy the critics and stay innovative and exciting?

Ben: Exactly what you just said; it’s innovative and exciting. There is room for all styles of music from your cheesy bounce to the more serious international sound and everything in between. There is no other genre that offers such diversity.

Andy: Aside from the music I think it’s the family vibe that the scene has. Everybody knows one another and has done for years so when you go out to play it’s like visiting friends! The crowds are out for a good time and this brings a great atmosphere to the clubs.

You’re both headlining the Christmas edition of HDS, which is mainly a new talent night. Why do you think it’s important to support of DJs?

Ben: Because hopefully new DJs mean a new slant on the music. It’s important to get new talent to find new sounds and help move the scene on. One of the things that the Trade DJs like Ian M, Tony De Vit and Pete Wardman did for me was to encourage me to find my own sound and path.

Andy: New blood keeps the scene fresh and moving.

Which of the DJs on the line up are you looking forward to seeing?

Ben: Well apart from Farley I’ll be having a peek at Pickup & Rise.

Andy: Probably Pickup & Rise as I’ve not caught one of their sets so far

A good choice! If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be?

Ben: A music producer. Oh I am! Whoopee!

Andy: I’d probably still be working at British Airways writing rosters for cabin crew!

Ha ha! What are your top 3 tunes of the moment?

Ben:
BK vs Lee Haslam - Guerilla Warfare
Prodigy - Speedway (BK mix)
Farley and Guyver - Paradox

Andy:
Andy Farley vs Base Graffiti – Get Tweeky
Andy Farley vs Paul Maddox – Anomaly
Karl Davis & Defective Audio – Electric Bee

Do either of you have any production plans for the New Year – any albums or tracks we should know about?

Ben: Loads of stuff planned for the new year kicking off with "Filthy House for Dirty Stop Outs 2”. Mixed by myself and Vinylgroover. As well as projects planned with Lisa Lashes and Judge Jules.

Andy: I’ve got a load of tunes that I did during the summer which aren’t due out till next year, plus I’ll be in the studio adding to those!

After so long in the music industry, how do you keep things fresh for yourselves?

Ben: For me it doesn't seem long but I have been doing it nearly 10 years as a job! Variety is how to keep anything fresh - keep changing and trying new things.

[b]Andy
: Constantly trying new ideas and pushing the sound forward.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure – it can be anything from fancying Anthea Turner to watching Beverly Hills 90210!

Ben: How the f*ck did you know that? Haha!

Andy: 70s and 80s disco - love it!

I’m psychic! If you were a woman for the day, what would you do?

Ben: Another woman!

Andy: Stay in all day and play with my new bits and pieces!

What’s the craziest tune request you’ve ever had in a club?

Ben: Had loads of crazy requests from Abba to the Beatles! Mostly from pissed people who have wandered into the wrong club.

Andy: Being asked for some R&B at a club in Melton Mowbray.

Random wonderings… Would you rather… Be too hot or too cold?

Ben: Too hot.

Andy: Too hot.

Go to Australia or America?

Ben: Oz definitely.

Andy: Australia.

Be a cat or a dog?

Ben: Cat; they have it easy

Andy: Dog

No fighting then! Be rich and ugly or poor and good looking?

Ben: Rich and ugly but pay for the surgery!

Andy: Rich and ugly

We’re looking forward to hearing some of their new productions in the new year.

Make sure you don’t miss two of the greats, Andy Farley and BK, at Frantic’s HDS. Add yourselves as going and check out the rest of the line up – with a huge array of London talent!

Well October’s 1st Birthday Halloween Special was fantastic – thanks to all the DJs, crew and clubbers who made it so special. With lovely witches Cally Gage & Frisky playing spellbinding sets, dark lords Tom Basquil & Steve Maynard bringing the grot, and more treats than tricks it was certainly one to remember.

Fresh (well, almost) off the back of the birthday, we’re bringing you our Christmas Celebrations. And it looks set to be even better!

It’s not often you get BK and Andy Farley for free, but Santa was feeling very generous this year and he came early to the HDS office. BK will be playing a merry mix of past & present classics, while Mr Farley will bring a dose of festive filth to our Christmas party.

The 2 legends will be supported by a couple of cheeky elves – Pickup & Rise, as well as the usual HDS suspects Elvis and Kevsey D. Rhyd B is back, and we get in the Christmas spirit to welcome Ben Townsend for his HDS debut.

MoreOnTheDoor are back after the success of their last 2 adventures in HDS territory, to bring you some jolliness in the shape their Little Helpers – featuring Special Guest Scott Fo-Shaw, Wain Johnstone & April, plus a few more reindeer.

There’s festive prizes on the night for the best girl’s outfit and the best boy’s outfit. So dust off your Santa sack, get your reindeer antlers ready, bring your own baubles and get your fairy wings out of the loft – it’s time to get festive!

And no HDS would be complete without the goody bags – including sweets & free CDs. If you’re skint you could even use these as top-notch Christmas presents for your Gran!

Plus, don’t forget; any budding hard dance DJs should come along on the night & submit their demos for the chance to play at the next HDS in January! You could be playing for Frantic in the new year, so make sure you drop your demo off at the front desk at December’s HDS.

We’ve also made a few changes to Hidden; we’ve got new DJ booths, better sound & generally made the place look a bit prettier and altogether more comfortable, just in time for Christmas!

So there you have it – all you need for a very merry Christmas, except a Christmas Pudding.

FREE ENTRY BEFORE 11.30PM IF YOU EMAIL YOUR NAMES TO ELVIS@FRANTICUK.NET. YOU MUST BRING THE EMAIL CONFIRMATION ON THE NIGHT IN ORDER TO GAIN FREE ENTRY.
ITS £10 AFTER 11.30PM AND IT’S ALSO £10 IF YOU HAVE NOT REGISTERED FOR THE FREE GUESTLIST!
