No, that's how it works currently, for all EU members including the UK.

Local law has to enshrine EU law; any other laws they propose or pass can't go against EU law. If they do, or they sail close to the wind, the EU gets upset - just look at Poland.

The appeals process is local in the first instance (UK Court of Appeals, Supreme Court, Parliament?) but EU law gives the right to appeal to the ECJ as the final arbitrator.

IIRC EU law is proposed by unelected commissioners and voted on by MEPs.

The CEO was in London on Tuesday to open a new European headquarters for Bloomberg in the City, covering 1.3 hectares (3.2 acres). But his earlier remarks, unearthed the same day, suggested he had regrets about making the investment decision because of the Brexit vote.

“We are opening a brand new European headquarters in London – two big, expensive buildings. Would I have done it if I knew they were going to drop out? I’ve had some thoughts that maybe I wouldn’t have, but we are there, we are going to be very happy.

He added: “I did say that I thought it was the single stupidest thing any country has ever done but then we Trumped it.”

Hmm okay, but even if it is proposed by commissioners does it not require votes from elected MEPs?

Yes, MEPs are elected from across the EU which brings us back to the balance of power between the EU and individual sovereign states.

Junker outlined the EU vision of ever closer union - central control of finances, foreign policy and military. These are key to running a country so to implement this, sovereign states have to give up virtually all their local powers. Each will be converted to our concept of county councils or US states - local tax raising and limited law-making.

I'm aware of this and yet we already had an option of opting out of ever closer union whilst remaining in the EU.

True, but I do feel we were holding up the EU with their march towards ever closer union so our departure was inevitable, assuming we ever had a chance to vote.

I think this is why many of us voted Out - it's not that we wanted an abrupt departure, but because successive governments have ignored public opinion and signed us up to treaties we didn't agree with or to. It was a way of sending a warning shot, but I'll admit, I never expected it to happen.
