John Ridout, Ross Self and Lucy Clarke

» Burning Up EP

Label: Ringleader Interplanetary Productions
Format: Digital
Genre: Trance through to Hard House

Off the back of a recent album the Ringleader Interplanetary Production crew bring a four track EP with tracks from John Ridout, Ross Self and one of my personal favourite vocalists around at the moment, Lucy Clarke.

Firstly from the Burning Up EP we have the triple header of Ridout, Self and Clarke with the trancey Never Awake. What immediately springs out to me on this one that for a trance mix this one is fairly full on, but will without doubt get support from the trance jocks and some of the hard trance dj’s in their warm up sets. The production is crisp as always from the Ringleader camp. As we hit the breakdown, for me the lovely Lucy’s vocals have a touch too much echo going on at the start. But once we hit the stabby riff, the simplicity compliments Lucy’s vocals really well. Its not breaking any boundaries, but I defy any trance fan to not have a smile on their face and little boogie once it drops back in. Uplifting, bags of energy, which for me is what trance is all about.

Hypnotiszers is a solo outing from John Ridout and his love of all things psy trance certainly comes through on this one. A bass that rolls along in typical psy trance style, this one builds slowly, subtly adding and adding tiny elements to keep things interesting. The breakdown once again has a very simple riff, but you can really hear the trance elements shining through. For me when dropping back in just the bassline and riff lacks a bit of power and would have rather heard something a bit more punchy to take this track to the next level. Its good, and will make a good set filler, but I think lacks the beef to make it a real anthem. Even the addition of the extra layers to the riff doesn’t quite give this the track the punch you hope for.

Once again Ridout takes control of the knobs on his own for Fiesta and takes us on a much more uk hard trance romp. Bags and bags of energy theres still plenty of psy elements going on that will certainly find favour with fans of Technikal and Nick Sentience. The intro riff builds really well along side the blend of uk hard trance and psy. The main riff in the breakdown has all the hall marks of those big room hard trancers we know and love. A much better drop as well this time builds and teases before finally smacking back in with the balls we want it to! This will certainly find its way into most of the hard trance faithfuls cd wallets.

The last track in this quartet is the questionably named Fuck The Prom Queen. Taking a much more hard house approach than either of the other 3 tracks. Its once again got John’s psy influence in there, yet with those hard house bpms and energy. We told to Fuck The Prom Queen by the vocal (where on earth Ridout found this sample I’ll never know!). But once we hit that breakdown I actually have to say the hard house style main riff synth, mad filtering actually works really well. Its got classic sounding hard house elements to it and really delivers after the drop. Speeding along to a final treat in the mini break with the riff filtering over a rather awesome break beat. Its blurring genre boundaries which is always a good thing and can see this one going down well.

Overall 4 very good tracks. For me Never Awake and Fuck the Prom Queen are the stand out track, Hypnotiszers is a bit of a let down, but theres a bit of something for everyone in here so check it out!
