The trick is not to have kids.

But then you have to rely on the council to look after you when you get old.

You're in luck - Slough will be a majority Muslim council by the time you 'retire' and they have an excellent reputation for looking after their elderly.

This all can't be necessary surely.

Babies grew up in caves without any of this stuff!!! haha

You don't need car seats if you don't drive and you definitely don't need two, we just wanted one each. You won't need a cot straight away because the baby needs to sleep in your room with you for the first 6 months. A nice moses basket is about £60 and that can be moved so you can have it in the living room by day and in your room at night.

You'll need a steriliser too. Definitely.

I think the car seat was part of the pram...

Ha, that's another thing I've got to buy.

A car.

And I so wanted a Rolex this year. That's up in smoke.

You won't have a choice, you may as well resign yourself now.

Thats nothing. Once you add the car seat (we needed two, one for each car) steriliser, bottles, moses basket, cot and baby bedroom furniture, you're looking at the best part of £2500.

Thats just what the baby needs to START with.

You are right it isn't all necessary. Neither is the Rolex you want or the expensive clothes and shoes you buy. In reality any old watch and shoes will do! You buy them because you want the best for yourself. Now imagine having a baby/child. You want the very best for them even more than you want the best for yourself and if you see everyone else strutting around the neighbourhood with £800 prams then believe me an £800 pram is the very least you will settle for as you won't want your kid being the poor relation on the block.

I had no idea how competitive and snobbery laden parenting was until I had children.

In the same bed as you for the first six months?

When I worked for the Department of Health we advised against this.

Absolute Fact
