Bosh to Freestyle - Charlie Goddard storms Trance Sanctuary's 6th Birthday

Reported by Miles Gorfy / Submitted 07-02-17 20:36

Charlie Goddard has been a firm favourite in the Midlands for a number of years, playing events such as Storm, B2T, Tidy, Frantic, Rave On, AWsum, Xstatic, Sundissential, plus the legendary Tidy Weekenders and Ibiza Bootcamp. Recently crowned Resident for Storm at the Emporium and brand new Resident for Blessed, Charlie continues to hold his own within the scene, working regularly with Tidy Trax and other leading Hard Dance brands, with his original productions and remixes being featured and supported across the board.

Ahead of Charlie's set in the HarderFaster 140+ Room at Trance Sanctuary’s 6th birthday on March 18th, Miles Gorfy finds out how Charlie started DJing and gets an insider's view of the Hard Dance scene.

Hello Charlie, how’s it going? I first heard your productions about 6 years ago when you produced as Charlie Bosh. Magic In You was a firm favourite. How do you feel your productions have developed since then?

I am very well, thank you. I started producing by myself in 2010. I definitely feel I have progressed massively since, but I am also my own worst critic! Constantly setting my own benchmark as high as possible as there is always room for improvement in music production. I'm proud of how far I've come so far though and very excited about the endless learning curve it brings!

Can you talk us through your different aliases, Goddard, Bosh and Groove Complex? Are there any others, was F2 on Tidy’s Flogged series one of yours? Which genre do you prefer?

Yes, F2 was one of mine - it was under my Groove Complex alias. There are a few more aliases, but they are under wraps for the time being whilst I delve into different styles. But yes, I started as Charlie Bosh making bouncy hard house and as my producing skills progressed and my styles changed I reverted to using my real name for a more cutting edge Harder & Melodic sound, Groove Complex was also born around the same time as I’m partial to a bit of funk here & there! It’s a hard choice for a favourite between the styles I make, but I am a sucker for good vocals & powerful uplifting melodies.

You must be happy to have become Storm’s newest resident, how did that come about?

Yes very happy indeed! I’ve been going to Storm as a Clubber since 2006 so it’s safe to say I’m a common face in the club. I think I had my first set there around 2010/2011, but becoming resident for my home club event was something I could only have ever dreamed of. When Storm was relaunched in 2015 with Garbo running the show, he approached me in the venue about becoming the new resident and obviously that was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

You’ve been playing at some big events recently, The Tidy Weekender, Tidy Boot Camp in Ibiza, Frantic, B2T and Xstatic to name a few. Which have been the stand out events?

Anyone who has been to a Tidy Weekender knows that these iconic events are the cream of the crop, and getting to perform on the main stage on the Sunday night was a gig I will never forget.

What’s happening at your label Freestyle Digital Recordings, should we expect any more releases?

Yes, currently working on another string of release to come this Summer. Watch this space!

The Hard Dance scene has changed a lot in the last 10 years. What is your take on this and where do you see it going in the future?

The passion for the music that I’ve seen from day dot is quite amazing. Many great brands have come and gone, some still remain. What seems to be consistent is the memories that the events continue to deliver, and most importantly the community of clubbers, still after years there are many diehard fans which really keeps the music alive. Hard Dance really is such a variable genre, and it has taken a lot of influence from other styles whilst also in the same respect being totally unique. There are more producers coming through now than in the last 10 years, and the quality of music keeps getting better and better. While it remains mostly an underground scene, it does touch on the border of a broader audience. Some scenes are confined within their own sounds in a way, which isn’t a bad thing at all, but with Hard Dance, the artists involved can all be so different from the next and some of these have been recently supported by various other high profile DJs outside of Hard Dance, which is outstanding. Variety is the spice of life!

Thanks to social media, promotion has become easier than ever, where should readers got to follow what’s happening in your music and DJing?

Facebook is the main point of interest for me here, closely followed by Soundcloud & my website (which needs updating, I’ll admit). The following links are where you can follow what’s going on in my musical world.

How did you get your first gig? Thinking back to that set, what do you feel you got right and wrong?

My first gig came totally out of the blue. Playing in a club didn’t even cross my mind at the time, yet one of my CDs got back to a promoter called Danny Lee for a night called Twisted in Loughborough and he got in touch and that’s where it started. What I got right was playing banging music - the crowd loved it as did I. What I got wrong was belting it out at 150bpm, first set of the night haha!

What was the first and what was the last piece of studio equipment you bought?

The first piece was a set Numark vinyl turntables and the most recent is my current DJ set up: 2 x CDJ900 Nexus & a DJM850.

Who would you say are your recent inspirations?

My most recent inspirations would have to be Gareth Emery (massive fan), and Gammer (long time inspiration).

Thank you for your time Charlie, it was a pleasure talking to you. See you on the 18th March at Trance Sanctuary.
