PAN in Greek mythology is the god of the wilds, rustic music and impromptus, and companion of the nymphs! Pan - psy-trance artist extraordinaire - once said of DJing; that 'it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on', it seems these two gods are definitely not too far apart! With most of the world in and out of lockdown DJing was momentarily paused but thankfully things appear to be getting back on track. We decided a catch up chat with Pan was long overdue to see what fun he had been getting up to in the absence of gigs.

Hi Pan! I last interviewed you back in December 2018 and a lot has happened since then. How have you been?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to chat to me. I have been good. Very busy in the studio, though thanks to Corona and friends not so many performances. I did get to play in Czech Republic in July at Funny Moon Festival. That was pretty epic. There were probably 3000 people there and I had sets on both the chill and the main stages.

That's great - what else have you been up to musically?

Wow, well I am learning new stuff every day but I am still keeping to the original Goa roots that attracted me to psychedelic trance in the first place. While I am constantly trying new things and refining my sound, this is still the kind of music that could be played at a club or an outdoor party.

I remember you played in rock bands before becoming an electronic music producer. What instrument(s) did you play, and do you still play live? Do you miss the crazy ‘band life’?

I was second guitar and lead vocals in about 5 bands but I had this massive brain operation a few years back. I am totally fine now but I really can’t use my left hand for fine motor skills like playing chords. So no, I don’t play live any more. Do I miss it? Not really. When I left the rock scene, music was changing a lot. Once, members of the band could party until 7am, then do a gig that night. These days it’s a business. Musicians get up at 7am to go running and do Pilates, have a smoothie; they rarely ever party.

You’ve been making electronic music for a few years and released on some cool labels. Do you feel you’ve changed as a production artist? You must have learnt a lot, but what do you feel you need to learn more about?

I am learning so much, indeed, sometimes I get these moments of complete clarity. Synthesisers are serious beasts, with 100 drop down menus on 50 different things. I doubt that anyone will ever fully understand them. I have 9, but I only really ever use 2 of them. As with anything, familiarity is the key. My style is still very happy Goa based, but yes, I feel that I’ve advanced quite a bit. I would like to understand frequency modulation more. LFOs (not to be confused with LMFAOs) are tricky. I am planning to self-release soon, though I’ll still release on UP records. I am really hoping to see the return of Reincarnations Recordings.

You’ve also begun making chill music, under your alias 'Lost In Translation'; how did this come about and tell us about your chill sound & vibe…

A friend of mine in London, Tara, is part of a chill DJ team called Amaluna. They play everywhere, and are quite good. One day, totally on an impulse, I called her and said that we should make a chill track together. This was during the big lockdown, while everyone was stuck at home. She actually declined to be a part of the production unless she could physically be in the studio. Of course, that was impossible, but I went ahead and made one anyway. During production, I asked her for tips along the way, making sure it would work in a chill tent. The result of that effort was called Impulse (of course). When she told me that it sounded awesome, I went ahead and made another. Soon I was asking promoters to play a chill set, as I’d be onsite for a main stage gig anyway. Lost in Translation became a thing. I really enjoy making chill as all the rules go out the window - you can do whatever you want. My chill style is very psy, yet a bit weird. Lots of groovy baselines.

When you play gigs what style(s) do you play? Do you play live sets of your own productions or DJ sets or both, which do you prefer and why?

I actually wrote a piece about this on my website. Producers are not live musicians; we play something that we have made. Adding live sounds is cool, as is mixing with a sound card, but the backing track is still the same, so what is the difference between CDs of your music or playing on a laptop? The time that you have to do things is greater on a computer, but with CDs you actually look like you are doing something plus you can mix in a track from a producer that you admire. My main stage style is uplifting Goa, my chill is weird.

Is music your main career or do you do other work too? If so, tell us about the other stuff….

Still looking for that day when music can pay for everything. I know it is not far off. In the meantime, I do a lot of writing for a million different clients. I guess when performances come back, things will get a lot better. Few artists actually make money off releases anymore.

I’m sure like most of us you’re excited that parties have started up again! What was your first party/festival since the pandemic and how was it to be back on the dancefloor?

As mentioned earlier, I played at Funny Moon in Czech. Unfortunately something like 11 other bookings got cancelled. But at the Funny Moon it was awesome dancing and partying with 3000 people. No one had a mask on and not one person got sick. I’m really disappointed that I won’t be going to South Africa this year, as they throw the most epic events.

How did you get through the ‘lockdown days’?

For a while here in Spain we could not even leave our house, except to buy food. That became a delightful experience (sad really). And since my studio was across town, I didn’t get there for some time. When I did, I made a chill album.

What plans, hopes and dreams do you have on the horizon?

Next year I want to be playing all over the world. I am in the middle of a promotional blitz. I made a new website and asked my amazing wife (who is a marketing genius) to help me get the word out. On top of that, I am really getting into sound design and making tracks that have just that little bit more to them! I also look forward to lots of travel again. It’s been ages since I have been to Asia.

Do you have any epic ‘words of wisdom’ of a life mantra to leave the readers with?

Epic? Unlikely. Just be true to yourself and no matter how many people say that you can’t do it, or that what you are doing isn’t right, F&*k them. Don’t ever let go of what you believe in. You don’t have to be like anyone else. Be weird.
