Vandall brings his Warez to Timeless: The White Party

Vandall, one of the most exciting artists to recently emerge from the harder end of the trance spectrum. With his label Trancewarez established exactly two years ago, featuring the likes of Alphazone, Dave Joy, McBunn and Jon The Baptist; it’s so far delivered a menu of tough European style hard trance, plus more recently a tech-trance meets hard dance vibe. His productions have also received support from Dave Pearce and Kutski on Radio 1, with further global support from the likes of Marco V and DJ Scot Project to boot. It looks like this Welsh talent is set to continue blazing a path through our scene in 2008.
After having dived in at the deep end of DJing when he was just 15 year old (warming up for hardcore legend DJ Sy), he's currently making a name for himself with his captivating, scratch-filled sets that feature nothing but his own material, with gigs at Tidy Weekender, Bionic, Inside Out, Slammin' Vinyl and tours of Australia and Indonesia testament to his prowess behind the decks. On February 23rd, London's hard dance faithful will be treated to a full-on performance from this young talent as he takes to the stage at The Colosseum for Timeless' 6th Birthday. We roped him in for a bit of banter and to find out where he's come from, where he's at, and where he's heading for.
So your dad bought you turntables at the tender age of 12. His idea or yours?
Haha! Very much mine, although he was all for it! I had been buying DJMag since my 11th birthday and had managed to blag a few mixes at my auntie’s wedding. I was totally obsessed with getting a setup of my own and he made it come true for my 12th birthday!
Who were your inspirations when you started making tracks? Which producers really made you think “hmm...I want to make noise like that!”?
‘’Wanting to make a noise like that’’ is actually a very good way of describing the desire to write! Hardcore producers like Brisk / Trixxy , Seduction, Sy, Ham, DNA and many more were influences in the early days. I would go crazy for the drum and chord stab programming / sampling and literally just ached to get my hands on a sampler so I could do it myself. I of course still love it now!
What about your clubbing days? When and where did they start?
The first time I ever set foot inside a club was at The Jailhouse, Hereford, when I was 15, the same place I played my first ever gig to an paying adult crowd a few months later. That was my home clubbing wise for some time. Then came trips to the big events like Slammin’, Future Dance in London and all over the UK. Evolution, Emporium, and Vision in Cardiff were firm favourites through my late teens also!
Did you ever think you’d be getting your tracks played on Radio1?
No, actually. It was a really exciting and awe inspiring moment when Kutski called me to ask if I wanted to do a short showcase mix way back in summer of 2006. Now it’s pretty mundane, although it is quite fun when your in a taxi and you can say ‘turn up the radio mate, that’s my track playing’! It is of course an invaluable source of income for me and I can’t thank Kutski enough for his continued support of my music!
Is the trance sound your be all and end all? Do you think you’ll ever leave it on the backburner and concentrate on other sounds?
Well, I don’t really play or write ‘trance’. ‘Vandall’ in this scene started with the German hard trance / style. It has now developed into the hard tech-trance / dance sound that I’m working on and I should think it will continue to evolve and morph into pastures new. I see the genres of dance music usually being defined by the drum base and tempo of that style, obviously the music – typical chord structures, vocal content, and general musical vibe - do play a part in it too but there is a lot of experimentation to be had! Although I do write other styles (rarely ever finishing the tracks however!) every producer / studio monkey has his true love and this “rave” music will probably be mine for many years to come!
What do you use to make your tracks? Do you think different software lends itself better to different styles?
Logic has been my sequencer of choice for quite a few years now. I am currently running Logic 8. All sequencers do pretty much he same thing, 70% is personal preference but there are packages that can do things that others can’t and / or do it better than the competition. I think for dance music Logic’s MIDI implementation is the don. If you were working more with audio then Cubase is maybe better, but people do things different ways. I work with VST samplers and MIDI, the old skool way, whereas many people just work with blocks of audio samples on audio tracks! In terms of synth work you cannot beat the Access Virus range of hardware synths!
You’re playing at Frantic’s classics event Timeless on February 23rd. What was your “golden era” for dance music and will you be revisiting it on the night?
I think everyone will agree that the music of the mid ‘90s will always be remembered in dance circles. There aren’t really any tracks from then that would fit in with a set in this genre / scene now but expect a remix or two! There are lots of great European hard trance / style anthems too choose from though!
What do you prefer about dance music now compared to then?
I don’t think its possible to answer this question because OK, yes, if you could somehow go back in time with the knowledge of today’s music some of what was around then would sound a bit weak / dated / under produced, music is constantly moving and taking impressions from its history.
What are your views on remixes/bootlegs of classic trance tracks?
If they are done by people who know what they are doing and have a touch of class then I’m all for it!
Which DJs and producers have you been getting excited about recently
Yoji Biomehanika, Remo-Con, Scot Project, Mac & Mac, there aren’t many people doing this ‘tech dance’ sound! Louk is banging out some interesting hard hitting stuff and Joe-E, an up and comer from down south is really hitting the nail on the head with his new works in progress too, watch out for two collaboration tracks from myself and him very soon!
2007 seemed to be the year you really broke through. What were your highlights, best gigs and so on?
Touring Australia alongside Scot Project and others was obviously simply fantastic! I’m very happy with the direction my music has taken and the fan base I have started to collect!
And what does 2008 have lined-up for you so far?
I will be working as hard as I can on my production, performances and promos - simple!
If you had to give up either DJing or producing, which would it be and why?
That’s a very hard question because although I am first and foremost a producer the nightlife and hands on experience of the music is part and parcel. It would probably depend on what sort of money the performance or production / writing side of things was bringing in. Being poor is not fun! Haha!
And finally, what’s your favourite way to unwind after a hard weekend of gigging?
Stuffing my face, on my sofa, in front of my media centre home theatre PC system watching interesting documentaries back-to-back from Google video etc on the subject of the cosmos, quantum physics and the like. Sad eh!  Getting down to it with a lady friend isn’t bad either!

Once upon a time in the land of Hard House…..
The heavenly Kingdom of Hard Beats lay cold, dormant and desolate following the enormous New Year’s Eve celebrations ordered by the mighty sorcerers Frantic. Dark gloom and boredom spread across the land like a plague, sapping the energy out of all and sundry. Only the mischievous goblins of Hard Dance Showcase provided any respite from the harsh, unforgiving weather of the month of January with their intimate shindig at Hidden.
Now the time has come for the might of Frantic to rise again and bring happiness and joy to the Kingdom, with a night of classic, anthemic, spine-tingling hard music - Timeless 6: The White Ball! Only a truly special location would be fit to stage such a magnificent party….
And so the resplendent palace of The Colosseum in the Queendom of Vauxhall was chosen as the venue for this musical feast; a much-favoured den of debauchery of that was chosen in favour of the originally proposed venue, following careful consultation with Frantic’s loyal subjects. This gargantuan 4-chambered ballroom will be transformed into a magical, white-themed magical wonderland by Frantic’s army of decadent pixies – and in keeping with this stunning theme it is suggested that all attendees wear at least 1 item of white clothing!
A truly stellar cast of guests have been invited to provide the entertainments for this unmissable banquet of musical pleasures. Queen Farley and King Reynolds grace us with their presence, presenting 2-hour sets of highest caliber, while the Welsh Wizards Cally & Juice join world-class conjurers like Alex Kidd, Kevin Energy and Kutski in a battle of magic, skill and wits. The enchanted lovers Prince Whitby and Princess Gage will dazzle with their youthful energy and impressive command of the crowd, while contenders to the throne like the beautiful damsel Frisky and the fearless soldier Steve O’Brady will show us all that the Kingdom is in safe hands.
Court Jesters Matt Pickup & Andy Rise, from the depths of the Northern Kingdom, will be on hand to entertain all with their high-octane, enthusiastic ways, while a very special guest comes in the form of the intrepid Antipodean explorer Steve Hill – joining us after another of his lengthy excursions into the far-flung corners of the globe! More exotic performers from lands afar come in the shape of the fiery French dancefloor-slayer Karim and the fearless, crimson-locked Scottish warrior Phil York, with more delectable fayre from the likes of Vinylgroover, and the next generation of feisty young Frantic soldiers showing their wares in the Hard Dance Showcase chamber!
And by special decree of the Emperors of Frantic and their deviant army of Twist, an extended afterhours session known as FT will see the most dedicated revelers continue the celebration well into the later hours of the morning at the nearby fortress of Hidden!
