Lock Up Your Daughters, It's Jimmy Dean

Reported by puzzle-project / Submitted 10-08-09 17:16

Swish, smooth and sophisticated; James Dean was all this and more. Quite like his namesake Jimmy Dean, resident and promoter at some of the UK’s largest promotions. Ahead of his trip London this weekend, Ben Bennett threw on a leather coat, donned a cap and headed out to get the lowdown.

Hello mate. As many people know you are resident at 2 extremely successful parties, Storm and Xstatic. Most people will give a limb to be in your position playing regularly there, so what is the best thing you can suggest to an up and coming DJ who wants to break into these and other established events?

Hi Guys, Firstly thanks for having me down, it’s very much appreciated. Well I got to be resident and promoter at Storm because I’ve worked here at The Emporium for nearly nine years now. I begged the owners for a job as a glass collector (working for free) when I was very young because I really loved the music and worked my way up the ladder with great determination, which has now paid off (I’m very lucky and proud).

I’ve always put on my own parties even from when I was at primary school - scouts discos (I’ll show you the pictures if you want, check out my curtains!) So Xstatic was a natural progression I guess! All in all, I’d say the very best way for a DJ to break into all this is, be true to yourself, It isn’t easy, A lot of DJs come and go, but I truly believe the DJs that stand the test of time are the ones that work the hardest, and focus their entire lives on it, as I have.

What do you think is more important when throwing a party; Putting effort into the production or having big expensive DJs on the line-up?

Of course it’s important to have strong line ups and first class production, but I think more important than all of that is to have a community feel. Storm and Xstatic have very strong communities, take away a community from an event or brand and you take away the heart and soul of the party.

Similar to the residents at Puzzle Project, you also promote the events you play for. If you had to chose between promoting and playing, which would you pick and why?

Now that is very easy! Playing all day every day! Any Promoter/DJ that tells you they would prefer the hassle of putting on events over DJing is lying.

There are scores of new nights opening all the time, a lot of which will fizzle away and be forgotten, what makes an event go the distance in your eyes?

Dedication & Madness! No, I think looking from the outside in, it seems easy to put on a few DJs and fill a club but the harsh reality is far from it! I have lost an awful lot of money with Xstatic, but I keep it going because I believe in it, and it means a lot to a lot of clubbers and DJs. Also very important - listen to the clubbers – always listen to the clubbers.

Who are your top three DJs to watch over the next 12 months and why are they ticking the right boxes?

Genix - 100000%. Passion resident, fantastic producer and now in charge of Passion and he’s being tipped by Jules and Armin as the next big thing. Jordan Suckley – Jordan had a brief spell as Xstatic resident, but is now on Eddie’s agency and soon to be headlining Cream! JMF – Xstatic resident and techno genius, his mixing is the best in the world. As soon as I can, I’ll find him a set next to Carl Cox!

As well as spending hours promoting and DJing, you also produce your own music and have recently had releases on Tidy. Do you feel it’s necessary for DJs to get into the studio to secure bookings?

No not really. I’ve been a producer as long as I’ve been a DJ, In fact I’ve got another photo of me when I was 11 in the Studio if you wanna see!! Check out the DOO! I think DJs think they need to produce to get gigs, but really it’s a myth, if you feel like you want to write a track, write one, if you don’t, then don’t!

What are your top five non-dance music tracks?

1.) I listen to anything by Amadeus Mozart. Even if I don’t get it. It fascinates me.
2.) Classic FM’s Piano Classics CD (that came out 2 weeks ago – wicked!)
3.) Anything by The Prodigy (oops sorry did you say dance!)
4.) Anything by The Beetles.
5.) Anything by The Cheeky Girls.

If you hadn’t discovered dance music, do you think you would be in a band or trying your hand at music in one form or another?

Definitely, I also play the drums so I would 100% be in a band.

You’re obviously headlining Puzzle Project’s August party with Greg Brookman. For those who haven’t seen you play before, what can they expect from a Jimmy Dean set?

High energetic, original house music that’s hard. (I might even chuck a few moves out if Ben pulls his finger out with the drinks tokens!)

What exciting plans do you have in the pipeline for the next few months?

Xstatic’s 4th Birthday this weekend which I am really proud of – I will be very drunk so lock up your daughters! I’m looking forward to coming to see you guys for the first time for sure.
Storm’s 200th Event – BIG! There’s also three tracks being released now on Deprivation, the Xstatic free Garden Party on 30th August too. I’m happy as long as I’m busy! Or else I get mardy!

Many thanks again for having me – see you on the 14th!

More: Puzzle Project has it's sights firmly set on August’s event where we team up with brand spanking new trance label Red Sky Digital Recordings.

The brainchild of Puzzle Project residents Matt Church and Phil Lankester alongside production partner Kevin Shepherd, the label has been formed to be an outlet of their own music along with up and coming international names such as Adriz, Nathan Cryptic, Luke Warner and Del Strange to name a few.
You will also recognise names like Liam Melly, Ben Alonzi and Estigma appearing on the label with original productions and remixes.
In a short space of time Red Sky has an impressive musical arsenal ready to hit the virtual shelves in September. This event will showcase their music and expose you to the artists of what will be one of the most exciting and diverse trance labels in a very long time.

One artist that is due to appear regularly on Red Sky is the long absent Greg Brookman who has been in Thailand for the majority of the year. We welcome him back to the UK (hopefully to stay) for his first set in the UK in over 7 months!
As an incredible producer and performer, we know you will be in safe hands when this man appears!

We are also extremely delighted to welcome along Jimmy Dean who is resident at the multi award-winning Storm and Xstatic. Jimmy has had recent success with his productions on Tidy and the continuing growth of both of his brands.
Considered as one of the hardest working men in hard dance, Jimmy heads up the August roster.

So in full you can expect to see:
