» MAGIC BEANS EP1

Reviewed by Ian Betts / Submitted 27-10-03 14:22

Label: MAGIC BEANS
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: TRANCE

Magic Beans is a new label from a group of trance DJs and producers in London who have created the label as an outlet for the production talents of their team.

More Than Love by Jurrane is a beautifully crafted slice of european style trance very reminiscent of Above The Sky releases. A tough-ish rhythm section underpins the floaty pads and leads, the man riff being introduced a la Alphazone and the breakdown via some nice touches with the pads. Strong arpeggios are introduced into the mix before the track kicks back in and the track slams from there!

Gamma Storm by Sly One is by far and away the strongest of the four tracks and has already found favour with the likes of John Flemming at Gods Kitchen. It is a great piece of production fusing proggy elements with psychadelic touches and coming out with a driving hypnotic trance monster and not a hint of cheese in sight! It's a big tune that delivers without the use of the usual cliches and I expect this to be big at Crasher and with the big boys.

The wonedrfully titled Vowel Movement by Tequila is another strong track reminiscent of the very first days of the trance explosion back in 1997. Again this a cheese-free release with some really interesting synth sounds and FX all used with great effect. Whilst not necesarrily a peak time track, it will still find favour with many DJs who like something less obvious yet energetic and melodic.

Fluoromation by Dan Stopani is perhaps the weakest on the release and whilst it has elements of being a great tune, the synths and programming are all a bit too tired and obvious without being done well, which is a shame as there are some good ideas in a track full of potential, and the track has a sadly eurotrance gone wrong feel about it.

All in all this is a very respectable first release for the label. It is great to see new trance producers being given an outlet for their work and is another sign that trance is making a definite comeback Thumbs up Big grin

Fantastic EP. Love all the tracks, hard to pick a favorite for me.

Look forward to hearing Gamma Storm @ some of the big events.

Stickman.
