Glazby goes Full Circle

Reported by Danny Gilligan / Submitted 09-08-10 19:01

After Feersums incredible 10th birthday last October, we are back with a bang. With a sensational new venue and our strongest ever line-up, we think this is going to be a rather special Feersum night. With the big night nearly upon us, we thought we would catch up with one of our special head-line guest, Mr Paul Glazby. It is worth noting that this will be one of the last times that you will ever be able to hear Paul play in London again. To find out why, read on . . .

I think I, along with so many other people were shocked to read that you were to be semi-retiring from DJing at the end of this year. Talk us through this , I imagine this must have been a really hard decision for you to make?

Yes it took a lot of deliberation, it’s a dream job for a lot of people, myself included, but I’m 32 now and the last 10 years have flown by, in the back of your mind you always know that it won’t last forever, you’ve got to have an exit strategy and I’d rather get out on my terms than anyone else’s. With my other career starting to take up a lot more of my time I had to cut something and I thought where else can I take DJing? Stepping back was the best option for me. I’ll still be around obviously, doing the gigs with Storm and Insomniacz but the grind of thousands of miles every year will be gone!

Will you still be producing and will the Vicious Circle still carry on?

Yes to both, I intend to knock a few tracks out each year and VC will still be turning stuff out. Mr Stevens has long been at the helm for VC anyway, you can all thank him for it still being around to put out the music we do, in fact I’d like to thank him too!

What are you going to do with your Friday and Saturday nights next year? Surely Glazby isn’t going to be putting his slippers on and sitting in front of the telly watching Ant and Dec?

Hahaha probably not Ant & Dec, I will look forward to not missing countless Birthdays, Weddings, Christenings and Bar Mitzvah’s though! Or just to know that after a week of 5.45am starts I don’t have to get in the car on a Friday night and be out until 7am the next morning!

Is there anything that we could do to persuade you to play somewhere else other than Storm and Insomniacs next year? How much money and how many naked women would we need to get for you to play in London next year?

Hmmm yeah, send me a pm ;-)

If and when you do fully retire from the scene what do you think will be your "one more" tune?

Well before I answer that I’ll just mention that there’s a petition going round Facebook for me to do the closing set at the Weekender in November, if that comes off it will be THE LAST TIME I play ‘Kick It’ – ever!

Back to your original question, I think it would have to be RR Fierce’s ‘You Don’t Know’, I still remember when he sent me the CD (before the days of yousendit!) and it blew my mind, it hasn’t lost its shine even after all these years, legendary tune, legendary bloke, can’t think of a better way to finish my career than with that bad boy!

With you semi retired there will obviously be a big void in the scene, especially when it comes to playing the harder stuff. Are there any DJ's out there that you think are ready to step up to the plate and pick up the Glazby Hard House baton.

There’s a guy from near Birmingham called Andy Farley – JOKE JOKE!

No seriously, the people I look up to that will hopefully fill my place are Ben Stevens and Adam M. These guys work their bollocks off for the scene, much more than a lot of people who get recognition and money they don’t deserve (myself included) and they never complain, they keep on churning out tracks, running events, staying up all weekend to make sure gigs run smoothly. These guys deserve the support from the clubbers, not the DJ’s with the biggest marketing campaign or database!

I'm sure over the years you have had many memorable DJ experiences, but if you had to choose one which one would it be?

Probably 20,000 people going mental to ‘Beautiful’ at Dance Valley, middle of the afternoon, about 28 degrees. I was on a scaffolding tower about 100 metres in the air!

With the main room at Feersum being vinyl only, are you having to go up to the Glazby attic, push past the dirty mags and brush the cob webs off the vinyl or do you still carry a few bits of 12 inch record around with you?

Firstly, the mags aren’t in the attic, they’re under the bed!

Secondly, Adam M’s got all my vinyl! I’ve got to meet him next week to get it back.

In 3 words what can the Feersum massive expect from Glazby when he turns up on at the Light Box on the 14th August?

Vicious Circle Classics!

It’s been a pleasure and emotional speaking and all at Feersum HQ wish you the very best in your new career.

Cheers guys, see you next week Wink
