Introducing Sunburn’s Shailendra Singh to Skrufff (interview)

Reported by News Editor / Submitted 07-07-14 12:09

“I’ve lived a whole lifetime in these first 47 years of my life. I’ve been there, done that. I worked damn hard for all of it, of course, but the things I have seen, and done, and failed at, and succeeded at. . . why should I wait until I’m 80 and dying, to share it all? F?@K knows if I’ll even make it to the next year. I want to get it out now.”

With a back-story that includes producing 72 Bollywood films, handling over 200 of India’s biggest sports stars and actors and the launch of India’s uber-successful EDM Festival Sunburn, Shailendra Singh has a lot to talk about as well as pointed opinions on the secret of his – and others - success.

“I am proud to be made in India, I love my country,” he declares, “And, with such a young population, the youngest in the world, India is thriving.”

“The youth have such passion and creativity and tolerance and understanding of the world, that I am excited for the future. My only fear is that Indians have a habit of not dreaming big enough. Of lacking in self-belief.”

If I can share my experiences, if I can help some avoid a few of the same mistakes I made, or inspire some to dream big, or dream bigger, than it’s worth it. I think it matters.”

Sharing his suggestions via his recently published book F?@K Knows he’s also now joining Skrufff as a new contributor, delivering a series of weekly excerpts of some of the best bits from the book. But why should someone listen to Shailendra and pay attention to his insights?

“F?@K knows,” he laughs.

But why does anyone listen to anyone? Because storytelling shows us that there is never just one perspective. With different angles, we get the richest experience out of life.”

And what does he hope Skrufff readers ideally gain from the series?

“A few chuckles from hearing the stories of a fairly mad, creative f?@ker. And maybe a fresh Indian perspective on things. One on seven people on the planet is an Indian. We’re the largest democracy and market in the world. Worth a bit of a listen, no?”

“Because you could land up being in my living room, going through my vinyl records, and find a snake, because I find come from the land of snake charmers and elephants.”

Shailendra in Skrufff- F?@k Knows - Just Do it

“Go sit at your desk and write out the five things that you want to accomplish by the end of the year. Not what your family wants you to do, or your wife wants you to do, or your boss wants you to do. What you, deep down in your heart, really want to do. Seriously . . . do it. Make your F?@k It List right now.

Done? Feel good? But now, my friend, please realize that, unlike most of the self-help books that you might have read, what I am suggesting you to do is not an abstract exercise. I actually expect you to go and do it. Simple as that. ‘Just do it’, as the Nike logo commands you to do—those copywriters for Nike were f?@king brilliant!

Just do it. I know it’s easier said than done. We are so used to putting aside our desires and goals in order to handle the immediate issues that come and go in our daily lives. Just like our New Year’s resolutions. Before you know it, the year is up, and you realize that you never did sign up at the gym, you still take two sugars in your coffee and have put on eight kilos! You can’t let that happen to your F?@k It List.

You have to put in a little effort to not get side-tracked from your goals. You have to wake up every morning and say, ‘F?@k it! No matter what, I am going to move one step closer to fulfilling my goals! You’ll be surprised at just how simple your desires are. How easy it is to make something happen when you are completely sure that it is what you want. And how just a few ordinary things can give you extraordinary happiness, if they happen to be the things that you want.

Watch the movie again. Make your F?@k It List. Go out and get it done. This life is about you. It’s time to live it on your terms. If you are not living to make the most of being alive, what are you living for?”
