Graham Gold says Cor, it's Fijneman

It’s that man again. Graham Gold continues in his quest to bring you the biggest and the best headliners from around the world. For those of you that weren’t at July’s Peach, the house was well and truly bought down with sets from none other than John ‘00’ Fleming and Russian sensation Bobina. Braving floods and despite the fact that it was the same weekend as Global, the atmosphere was beyond electric, with huge sets, massive lasers and a crowd that were more up for it than Graham himself, which if you’ve met Graham is no mean feat!
This time round Graham brings us one of Holland’s biggest stars to date, the man they call Cor Fijneman. World class trance superstar, Cor has set dance floors on fire on every single continent with his soaring xxx trance. On Friday August 31st, he steps up to the wheels of steel at London’s most famous superclub Heaven for Pure Sessions Presents: Peach. Playing alongside Cor will be Mike Shiver, making his long-awaited UK debut, Radio 1’s Jon O’Bir and of course Graham Gold himself.
In the run-up to the big night Graham pinned Cor down, beat him over the head with a 12” (vinyl) and bashed the truth out of him. Well not exactly, but he did ask him a couple of probing questions. Although unfortunately no Russian hooker ones this time!
Hi Cor! We’re really looking forward to having you play for us at Peach at the end of the month at Heaven. When was the last time you were in London?
The last time I was in London was in the beginning of this year so it’s time I came back to that wonderful city.
You record for Black Hole, do they ever come back to you with changes they want when you deliver new tracks or do you have total artistic freedom?
I have total artistic freedom but some feedback is welcome now and then. Sometimes they come with some ideas for a track I made that really lifts the track to a higher level.
Do you work on your own in the studio, and do you have anyone special you send your tracks to for their nod of approval?
I work together with another producer in one studio and we listen to each other’s records and try to work together as much as possible. Also I always try my records out on the audience I’m playing for because when they loose it on the dance floor, you know the track is good.
How’s your DJ diary been lately? What have been the stand-out shows for you this year?
I’ve had a pretty busy diary this year with a lot of good gigs. My gig at Trance Energy was one for in the books and also the Intuition Summer Event last July was one to remember.
Has anyone ever come up to you and said “Cor, you are a fine man”?
No, that’s the first time ever I heard this. As long as I can remember, people haven’t said this to me.
Have any girls ever come up and said Cor, you’re gorgeous!!? [Sheesh! – Ed]
That would be a dream come true, but most of the times my friends leave with all the nice girls.
Tell me how you got into all this in the first place?
I rolled into DJing through a friend of mine that was playing. I once tried it at his home and when I bought my first records I was sold. Round that time I also started to make some music with my computer and synthesizer so I almost started at the same time with DJing and producing.
What did you listen to growing up?
I am a child of the 80’s so I listened to a lot of electronic influenced music like Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and Yazoo to name just a few.
What do you think has been the highlight of your career so far?
Releasing my first artist album was one of the highlights of my career but there are still more highlights to come. My work is not done yet.
You seem to have quite a track record as a producer for other artists, for me the most noticeable is Tiesto’s first ever release Theme From Norefjell. The reason is, I signed this back in 98 to my Good As label, just before we took over handling his UK bookings. That must seem an age away now. How does it feel to have watched him achieve all that he has?
I sometimes don’t realize how big he really is because for me he is still Tijs but when you play together with him you see how people look up to him and then I am also proud to be, maybe, a little responsible to all of this.
What remix have you done that has given you most pleasure?
The remix I did for Andain – Beautiful Things was the track I had the most fun in the studio making it. You could do so many things with this track that it was hard to choose which direction we wanted to go. The best remix I did, I sometimes play it still, was for Ton T.B.’s Electronic Malfunction. What a classic!
You have an amazing amount of energy behind the decks and the track you did with Jan Johnston - Venus was the track that really got you noticed. Now I know Jan and she is this little bundle of hyperactivity herself. Weren’t you both shattered at the end of each studio session?!
She was already when we started because she had a pretty rough night. But everything turned out fine in the end and it was a joy to work together with Jan.
I have to say I think for me the collaboration you did with Jochen Miller, San Andreas, was one tune that I just couldn’t stop playing. It was just awesome. There MUST exist some kind of rivalry amongst so many Dutch DJs. Do you ever check out the others web sites and maybe see they are playing a gig you aren’t and think “Why aren’t I playing that party?”
And then maybe next time I will be playing there. I have respect for everyone and I have a lot of fellow DJs that I am also friends with. So there isn’t that much rivalry.
What was it like being on the road last year for almost 3 months with Mark Norman. He is a total party animal! Are you the same??
I am also quite a party animal myself so most of the time during the our we were the last one’s leaving the club and also when I play myself they have to force me to leave the building when it’s already closed.
In the studio, what wins, Cubase or Logic?
Logic is slowly taking over Cubase. I am soon switching from PC to Mac so I am going to use Logic.
When you send flowers is it tulips or roses?
I am ashamed to say that I don’t send that many flowers but when I do, it’s roses.
You have played all the major festivals in Holland (and the world over). What Dutch festival does it for you most?
I always like to play the Mystery Land festival. This year it’s the third year I am playing there, it’s definitely the festival with the best vibe.

Dutchman Cor Fijneman heads the line up for our August party and we have another UK debut; this time in the shape of Sweden's Mike Shiver, whose productions, like that of Aly & Fila, have propelled him through the ranks to the very top.
We also have Jon O'Bir of Radio 1 and Gods Kitchen fame who graces the Peach CDJ1000's for the first time, also partying with a peachy flavour this month we have Nick Ronin, Tom Hardy, Dave Lambert, Darren Pearce, Pele, Tristan D and of course Graham Gold.
