This is Scott Fo Shaw! Reported by Ru Curthoys / Submitted 02-12-09 19:25 As one of the finest young things to come out of the hard dance scene, Scott Fo Shaw is well on course for superstardom! Not content with rocking the joint via his own record label, he’s also just signed to top roster, Strike. Ru Curthoys get the low down. 2009 has been another good year for you so far, including being signed to Strike Artists to join the likes of Lisa Lashes and Andy Whitby. For a DJ and producer like yourself, how significant is it to be signed to Strike? Being signed to Strike was something that I’d never thought could happen when I started out DJing and producing, it is pretty strange when I see my name next to people like Lisa Lashes and Andy Whitby on the roster. I think being signed to an agency such as Strike is great because they deal with your gigs for you and get you more exposure, so it gives you, as the artist, more time to focus on other things such as producing more records or working on new ideas for sets. How are things going at For Sure Recordings? Things are going well so far, although originally I was looking to launch around October time, it ended up being harder work than I was expecting and it has been difficult trying to get all of the tracks done for the first few releases and sounding really good. All that’s left to do now really is sort out the promotional aspect of things (eflyers, flash banners, DJ promos etc.) and get the tracks sent off to the distributors ready for release in the New Year. Congratulations on becoming a Tidy resident! What other highlights are there for you of 2009? Thanks! Other highlights include getting signed to Strike (obviously), growing my first pubic hair and finally getting rid of that burning gonorrhoea that’s been bothering me for months. What else have you been up to this year? What are you currently working on? I’ve been really busy this year with loads of different stuff, not just to do with music. The main other thing I’ve been working on is my degree at university. But music wise I’ve just had a new single signed to Tidy which should be due out in December. I’ve also had quite a lot of remix work and I’ve been working on a few house tracks and more vocal harder projects. Do you consider yourself as a DJ that produces, or a Producer that DJs? Neither really, I kind of started doing both at the same time. So I would say I’m equal part DJ, equal part producer; although the production does take up more time than the DJing does these days. You have a mighty impressive back catalogue of production and remix work, what are your personal favourites? I think all producers will say this, but I don’t really like listening to my older tracks much, I find some of them cringeworthy! But there are a few old ones I still like and play out, such as: That Summer Track (featuring Stace on vocals) and my remix of Miss Behavin’ – Such A Good Feeling. More recent tracks that I like more than the others are Secret, Badger Toucher and my remix of JP & Jukesy vs Garbo – One Night In Coolville, although the latter never actually got released. You can listen to clips of all of these tracks on my Myspace page. Tell me who you have collaborated with recently and who you’d like to work with. Recently I’ve created tracks with Nik Denton, Jon BW and my partner in crime Danny Ginn but he doesn’t really count as we make lots of sweet music together and not just in a sexual way. I’ve got quite a few more collaborations coming up including an EP with Andy Whitby, another track with Jon BW and a few others that haven’t been confirmed yet. In the future I’d love to work with Paul Janes because he’s written many of my favourite harder tracks over the years and I’d love to get in the studio with BK, no one in the hard dance world can touch him in my opinion. His tracks are so varied and he’s written many an anthem over the years. Outside of hard dance I’d love to work with Funkagenda, as he is on fire at the moment and I’d love the opportunity to work with Chase and Status to see how the production techniques differ between the different genres. In terms of DJing style, you are hugely versatile and play anything from chunky warm-up sets to full on banging hard house – do you have a preference? I don’t really have a preference, although I feel both styles have their place and that any tracks I play have to have a certain groove to them. If the groove doesn’t make me want shake my tight little buttocks then I doubt I’ll play it, because dance music for me is all about the groove, the vibe and making me want to dance. I don’t really see the point in playing something that is hard for the sake of being hard. What was the first record you ever bought? I’m slightly embarrassed of this but it was Hanson – Mmm...Bop. I think I was about five years old and got my mum to go into Woolworths and buy it on CD for me! What tracks would you describe as being in your top five at the moment? 1. Scott Fo Shaw Feat. Ashleigh Wood – Secret (Fo Shaw VIP Mix) [Tidy] 2. Rob Tissera & Technikal – Feefallin’ (Scott Attrill Remix) [Tidy] 3. Venkman – Disco Trip [CDR] 4. Scott Fo Shaw – Badger Toucher [For Sure? Recordings] 5. BK – Rave Monkey (JP & Jukesy Remix) [Tidy] What is the one record guaranteed to get you on the dance floor? Difficult question, it varies from day to day, but at this very moment it would have to be: War – Low Rider, purely because it is brilliant and an all time classic. If you were to promote a special one off night entitled “A night with Scott Fo Shaw and Friends” – which DJs would you like to invite to contribute to the evening? I’d love to have real variation in the lineup with all of the DJs playing longer sets, starting on a house vibe with someone like Funkagenda and then onto the Swedish House Mafia. Then possibly onto some techno, along the lines of Mauro Picotto funkiness. I think after that I’d have to play a set seeing as it’s Fo Shaw and Friends and I’d like it to finish off with some Drum and Bass with Chase and Status Live. I don’t think the lineup would work in the real world but that would be my perfect night in a nutshell. Is there a favourite venue that you would hold the event in? Koko without a doubt, easily my favourite venue in the country! For DJing, do you prefer the big production, big venue events like the Weekenders, or the small underground intermit venues? I’m a big fan of the bigger events, I just love the crowds of people, the lasers, the phatter than my Nan’s arse soundsytem I think it adds up to a great night. I think I prefer these big events because they seem a lot rarer in the harder scene than a lot of other scenes due to most of the events being more underground. Don’t get me wrong, I like these kind of gigs too but I think it just feels more special at the bigger events. You are a much sought after producer; if you were asked to remix a cheesy pop-track is this something you would consider? If I’m honest I wouldn’t think about it twice and I’d say yes straight away. If anyone else says otherwise they are obviously lying. Think about the exposure you could gain, and you could make the harder genre appeal to a whole new audience by making it more available and more mainstream. You have a girlfriend; was she surprised to find that you were recently found in a gay bar in Leeds? She said she wasn’t surprised, just disappointed. What exactly were you doing in the gay bar in Leeds? Myself and Danny Ginn sometimes go out to try and spot some fresh meat. We then like to take said fresh meat back to the local Etap hotel and do things that are illegal in some countries. If Scott Fo Shaw was a Supermarket chain, which one would it be and why? Asda because I like to tap people’s back pockets and see if they’re nice and firm…sorry I meant to see how much change they have left! You’ve got a cheeky sense of humour, have you ever had your sense of humour get you in to trouble? I once knocked on a foreign student’s door in the university halls asking her if she wanted to come and party with me and my friends. Turns out she didn’t and also claimed she wanted to rip my cock off. Which was probably something to do with me being naked and only covering my manhood with a saucepan. You are quoted as saying that you want to put the “house back in to hard house” – what exactly is wrong with the current hard house selection? Each to their own, some people like their records hard, but I think that a lot of records are hard for the sake of being hard. I believe that for the scene to become more mainstream again that the records need to become more accessible like they were a few years ago when the scene was bigger. For the harder styles to get crossover potential to be, I think a lot of the music needs to be less scary to the mainstream music listener to gain radio support and more uplifting, maybe even commercial sounding. I know a lot of people might not agree with that statement but that is the way I see it and I still think there will always be a place for the harder / filthier records. Do you have any aliases? I have a couple of other hard dance ones that I haven’t used for a while, they were projects with other people. I don’t see the need in having lots of aliases (or is it aliai?) for a similar kind of music to what I normally make. I’ve also got one for my house projects but I’m keeping that on the down low for now and I don’t think anyone other than the select few know it. But I’m sure people will work it out as soon as the tracks come out in a few months. What is Playground Disco? Playground Disco is mine and Danny Ginn’s show on Slinky FM. We play allsorts from house and trance to hard dance. We even have a guilty pleasures section where I get to play some of my favourite tracks, such as: Careless Whisper and Boys of Summer. You have a new website – www.scottfoshaw.com – what can we find there? It’s quite a simple site. It is mainly a portal to all my pages on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. But there is also links to all of my previous demo mixes and coming soon there will be sexy shots of me that you can use as your desktop wallpaper. It’s a winner for everyone! Any words of wisdom to share with our readers? When you’re as attractive as I am you sometimes tend to find that when you look at yourself in the mirror, you make yourself moist.
