Gipsy Soul discusses the 'Circle of Life'

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 24-03-21 15:50

Johannes Horvath is an Austrian based Progressive Psy-Trance artist who created the project Gipsy Soul in 2014. The music which evolves from Gipsy Soul is mystical, magical and moving; incorporating invigorating lush lines, elevating melodies and heavenly vocals all perfectly placed on a bed of kinetic kicks, punchy percussion, and delectably driving basslines. The music has resonated with minds, bodies and souls all around the globe and the results have been outstanding, securing releases on legendary psy-trance labels like Iono-Music, Hommega Productions, Tesseract Studio, Digital OM Productions and Yellow Sunshine Records. Gipsy Soul’s star is rising fast so we thought it was about time we caught up with him - ahead of his debut album release on Iono-Music!

Hi Johannes, hope all is well with you?

All is pretty good with me thanks, my album release is going very well & that's mega exciting!

That's great! Firstly then, tell us a bit about your background – where did you grow up and how do you think your childhood affected your desire to become an artist?

I grew up in a small village in Austria. When I was a child I first wanted to be a professional soccer player! That was until I had my first jam session with some friends of mine at the age of 14. We had a lot of instruments from our parents and grandparents and jammed in my old children's room together. I played drums and percussion most of the time. So, it was very loud and my mother had to have very strong nerves!
I'm lucky that she supported me back then and also all through the years - since the beginning of my dream to become an artist.

At the age of 16 I began to work intensively in music and took my first producer steps with Fruity Loops. Back then I was totally into genres like Hip-Hop, Funk and Jazz. Then a friend introduced me to Psy-trance! I can still remember how in awe of it I was when I was taken to this first Psy-Trance party in Vienna at 16 years old. Rinkadink was playing his album - 'Rabbit from the Darkside', and I remember thinking how different and fresh this sounded! How innovative and exciting it all was! It wasn't like anything I'd ever heard before! Since that moment I was infected by Psy-Trance and all its colourful experiences. I'm now 34 years old and have never looked back :-)

I have been making music now for almost half of my life you could say, and I'm always trying to push it to the next and higher level. Project Gipsy Soul was born in 2014.

What is your earliest memory of music?

I grew up with a brother and two sisters. They were all listening to rock and metal.
My first memories of music were hearing Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, ZZ Top and the Easy Riders soundtrack - this was probably around the age of six.

How did you come to sign with the Iono-Music?

After a few releases with my buddy Aioaska on Iono-Music I thought it would be fantastic to be a part of this nice label. 1 year later Matthias (DJ Cubixx) called me and signed me directly to Iono-Music. I always try to give 120 percent to everything I do. I think that's the main key to success, work as hard as you can and sooner or later it will come. Always keep it real, love what you do, believe in yourself and just do it!

How is the current pandemic affecting your life?

The current pandemic is affecting all of our lives. I did wonder if it was the wrong time to release my album, and whether it was stupid...but with no firm end date to it all I thought - I could be waiting a long time and, in the end, I decided to do it, thinking what the hell!

No doubt I will make another one when there is no pandemic (hopefully).

For me it's very sad that there are no parties and festivals at the moment in Europe. From the artist side it's hard, but I am looking hopefully into the future and really looking forward to see you all on the dance floor again. For now, I am trying to focus on the positive side which is that I am enjoying spending more time with my beautiful family.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

My lovely son and my beautiful wife.
People I meet on the dance floor.
Nature.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?]

No, not really. I try to be as self-reflective as possible all the time. I think you must be able to look into your mirror every day and be happy with what you see. So, stay real and love the people around you.

Tell us about the album you have just released on Iono-Music. How did it come together, is there an ethos behind it, and talk us through some of the most poignant tracks for you?

After many single releases I thought it was time to make an album, because an album is an album. You can't compare it with single releases. It's more like a day trip visit into your world. Also it is out on CD which is very special these days - as you can buy physical copies. The internet changed the way that people are listening to music. Everything is going really fast nowadays and there is a lot of good music out there. This makes it hard to remember anything because the web is so overloaded with great tracks. However; you always remember a good album when it hits you!

My wife being pregnant with our son was another reason for deciding now was the right time for my debut album. This was what inspired the title - 'Circle of Life' – as it fitted perfectly with my current world. I produced the album in the last year - 2020. My son was born at the end of March, and so I had a four month break from the studio when I was looking after my family. Being a father pushed me in a totally new creative way – I had less time for the studio, but I was more productive than ever before.

What are your upcoming projects?

After I finished my album 'Circle of Life' I started a few collaborations with big artists like Aioaska, Cosmic Tone, Hinap and Mindbenderz. New music is being cooked even right now - whilst you are reading this article. :-) I also plan a remix album of 'Circle of Life' at some point in the future. In addition to this I have started a Chill Out project which is currently being worked on at the moment. This will also be released under the name Gipsy Soul. So yes - there is lots of new stuff on the way.

Tell us about one of your happiest memories?

One of my happiest moments in life was for sure last year when my son was born. :-)
I can't explain the intense powerful feelings I felt. It is such a magical thing in life, something that I feel everybody on earth should experience.

What would be your life mantras?

Just do it!
Do what you love to do!
Keep it psychedelic and keep on rocking!
In Blast We Trust!
Keep it real!

Mostly - that we are all connected in the great Circle of Life!

Thanks for taking the time to do this interview - all the best for the future! Smile
