An interview with SOME1, a new alias of Psy-trance artist extraordinaire Mindwave

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 18-11-20 12:45

SOME1 aka Mindwave aka Anton Maiko has been a veteran of the Progressive Psy-Trance scene for well over a decade now. With the upcoming release of his debut album from his SOME1 moniker due out soon we thought it was a good idea to 'touch bass' with this pioneer!

A lot of people might know you from your Mindwave days, tell us about the switch to SOME1

After producing more than a decade under the Mindwave project, I decided it was time to start another one. A project with a new sound, production and concept. Experimenting with it and basically continue my musical journey. A fresh start is always good for your mind, body and soul.

How have you been during these testing times of Covid-19? Have you and your family been well? How have you been coping?

Well this situation is really rubbish and I hope we will see the end of it pretty soon. My family and I are well and trying to take it easy and enjoy the time we spend together. Although having said that, for me, Covid-19 was one of the best times production wise. I started working on the debut album a couple of months before the pandemic started so I've since had a lot of time to work on it easily and freely.

You’re now a family man too! How do you find the world of parenthood? Have you changed as a person? How do you balance family and work?

Wow it's not an easy world haha… it's challenging but yet fun and I enjoy every moment of it. As a person I think I have become more mature and responsible. I’m trying to spend most of the day with my family and at night, when everyone is sleeping, I go to work in the studio. It’s not an easy task but spending time with my son brings so much light, fun and muse. I gather all this during the day with him and I use that at night for my music. It's really hard when I need to leave him while I’m flying to other countries for a gig. All I think about is when I will back home and able to hug him again. Although he loves it when I go away as he knows that when I’m back he will get a present! Haha! He also loves to come to the studio and touch all the gear! I always enjoy him playing with the sounds... Who knows? Maybe he will find the right one for my next track!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Be yourself. Believe in yourself. Don’t look for others to blame for your mistakes and failures; deal with them and learn from them.

Do you feel you’ve evolved as an artist over the years, if so, how?

For sure. Every day you learn something. Every time you go into the studio you discover more and more. The musical world is endless. The more you work and experiment with sounds, listening to different styles of music, the more you expand your creativity! And then the magic happens in the studio.

Tell us about your upcoming album release on Iono-Music. The inspirations for it, the equipment used, favourite tracks etc...

It's the debut album of the SOME1 project so I am really exited haha. ‘Delicate Vibrations’ is the album name.

All things in life are in vibration. Everything vibrates. Everything is part of the great substance of life, motion responding to different rates of vibration. When these differing vibrations are in harmony they comply with cosmic laws; harmony of being and action is the result. When these vibrations are not in harmony they disobey natural cosmic laws. Discord and destruction is the result. So the album is vibrating between 120 to 142 bpm and each track tells a different story. I used my Microbrute synth in this album a lot, something I haven't done before.

If you could have only one piece of hardware, what would it be and why?

My Arturia Microbrute synth. It’s analog, compact and portable; I can it take with me everywhere and sit and tweak new sounds.

Do you have a set process when making a track?

Not really, I just go with the flow. I usually start with the kick and bass to build some groove and then I start dropping sounds, playing melodies and just looking and seeking for the right sound that I need next to fit.

I like to work while I am standing haha. That way I can move and dance and feel the vibe I create. I imagine that I’m on the dance floor.

What are the pros and cons of collabs?

It’s always fun to work with another person. Joint ideas and creativity in the studio can bring amazing stuff. You learn from each other, sharing experience and visions.

Sometimes it can be hard when you want to make something your way and the other artist wants it their way haha. In the end you find the balance and it sounds killer!

Do you ever suffer with writers’ block?

Sure, if I get to a point where I am “stuck” I just close the studio and take a break until I feel I’m ready to go back. I never force myself to work on music. I can go to see a movie or watch a documentary or just sit and relax on the balcony. Muse and inspiration is everywhere. You just need to look for it, listen and feel it.

Do you feel artistry can be taught?

I think artistry is something that you learn while working and gathering experience. The more you work and create something that is yours, original, unique, and not just copy other artists, the more special the music. In this you are creating your own sound, your own signature. It's not easy and can take a lot of time, but when it comes you feel really accomplished. You create something that other people take inspiration from and that's incredible. I think that's what a real artist needs to achieve and all the rest will come.

What are your upcoming plans for the future?

To keep developing the SOME1 project and of course work on new stuff from the Mindwave project too. I hope the pandemic will end soon. I really look forward to being back on stage - I so miss it! The energy of the people dancing to your sounds is the best soul recharge in this universe!

If someone made a film about you, which actor would you want to play you and why?

Well, a lot of people tell me that I remind them of Tom Cruise haha. So, I guess he will fit perfectly Smile

Look out for the debut album from SOME1 out late November 2020!
