Meet Miss Jarea Reported by TEK-DJ Management / Submitted 03-10-06 03:29 Polish born Magdalena Lipska aka Miss Jarea, is already regarded as hot property in Scandinavia. Her dj sets are a combination of full on energy, in both audio and visual as she pushes the boundaries with her energy and crowd interaction. With several releases under her belt on labels including Carnal and Shock Records, as well as her debut compilation album released on ID&T, Miss Jarea is about to make some waves here in the UK. Promotions around the UK are already starting to take note of this dynamic female dj. With a residency at the infamous legendary event tour Kremlin (the Netherlands) and a forthcoming set at tidy Norway in 2007, it’s not going to be long before you start seeing a lot of Miss Jarea in the UK. Many thanks for taking your time to answer a few questions for the harder faster readers. How is life treating you? Life is treating me good, I just came home from an awesome performance for Under The Sun, in Oslo. It was rocking! I also just got signed to a very influential Scandinavian events/booking agency, so things are on the rise for me. I always have more than 10 balls in the air. It is a great feeling. I have to say that my productions have opened quite some doors and playing at middle–large events in the Netherlands has also put me in the spotlight for gigs in Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Recently I have been in Finland and Switzerland and I had a great time. You were buying vinyl before you had any decks. How long did it take you to buy some decks to start mixing on and what was the first dance record you bought? I believe I got my first records approx 2 years before I invested in my first pair of 1210s. I had a small collection of some trance records at that time and with purchasing of the decks I also had grown music wise and found my true path in what music I really wanted to spin. When I got into records, I had already been a dancer for some time. My first dance record I bought was Signum — ‘Coming on Strong’. Actually, before I got into techno based dance music, I was into break dancing! I’m a B-Girl: I got the breaks! If you were to look back on your early musical influences, who or what would you say got you first interested in electronic sounds and dance music as a whole? I have always loved music and used to be a huge fan of dance music in the early 90s: Capella, Maxx, Captain Hollywood, Snap, Prodigy, you name it… then my whole world changed after a visit to BCM in Mallorca where I heard Josh Wink and Misjah spinning music I have never heard before. They have definitely been the ones introducing me to underground dance music and the experience has set me on a crash course to my destiny! As well as dj’ing and producing you are also an aerobics instructor and happily married. How do you find time to fit all this into your schedule? Your husband must be very supportive of the work you do and very proud of you? My husband is supportive indeed. Proud? I hope so. He demands a lot of himself, the lever is always very high. He tends to demand from others what he demands from himself and usually, that means that he isn’t satisfied until there is some kind of recognition or result. That’s good though, because it keeps my feet on the ground and it motivates me to strive for the ultimate, instead of being naively happy and comfortable with my current status. Naturally being a clubber and then a dj has seen you enjoy some fantastic events. What two events have you enjoyed the most that will remain close to your heart and in your memories? Where do you enjoy playing out the most? Indeed there are many. It is hard to pick an event, because every time I travel somewhere, the experience is unique in a way. I guess I will never forget my first international performance. That was in Turku, Finland. I remember how excited I was to have to fly to a gig. Other unforgettable nights were at Pacha in Egypt, a huge open air club where the sun rose while I played. Kremlin in Amsterdam, where I am still a resident, even thought the club itself has closed. Kremlin is still on tour. Two years ago we were on the Love Parade. That was amazing too! Anyways, I could go on and on. I enjoy spinning everywhere in the world, but Finland is definitely one among my favourite places due the amazing clubbing atmosphere and great events. You have recently released your compilation mix album, Miss Jarea — ‘Evolution Of Kaos’ on the ID&T label. Tell us a little about this and what the album is all about? The album is an epilogue of what I have been doing for nearly the past decade. Of course the tracks are up to date, but style wise there is a blend of everything that I stand for at this time. There is some techno, some hardhouse, hardstyle and even some of my own productions. In a way it is a three hour set, mashed into a 74 minute compilation. It was a challenge, but I am really satisfied with the result. ID&T too, because they asked me to do a follow up… What tune do you always carry with you that never fails when you drop it into a Miss Jarea set and gets that dance floor rockin’ and what has been your best production so far? There are certain tracks that always get played, but these change over time. Right now I hammer my Carnal release ‘Evil Seeds’ in every set, because it fits so well in between the hardstyle and techno tracks that I play. ‘The Witch’ by Lab 4 has also been one of my must-play records and lately I have been anxious to play my [official] remix for RBA’s classic ‘No Alternative’ also. It just hammers and rages so mercilessly. I simply can’t resist! I have produced and released many of my compositions. It is not for me to say which one is the best. It is very rewarding for me to see my productions become successful. When BK was playing my second Carnal release ‘Move Ya Head’ and included it in his top 10, I felt really proud. To see Sven Vath carry one of my records was another cool experience. The most rewarding experience though, is to see a live crowd jump and cheer to the beats that I worked so hard to create. The feedback I get from ravers all over the world helps me improve my skills where it comes to putting my thoughts to recording. Therefore my latest production ‘Brain Damage’ blends UK hard house and Dutch hardstyle with a techy twist. It is forthcoming on Passion Records UK and I have high hopes for this one. Being an aerobics instructor, do you combine these skills with your dj set, making the whole show one full of audio and visual energy? This must surely get the dj to crowd interaction going well! What is the make up behind a Miss Jarea set? Musically the make up is a blend between the UK hard house/NRG/hard techno and Dutch/German hardstyle and techno that I represent guarantees a unique experience on the dance floor. Regardless, I present my music with a lot of energy. Somehow the music just moves me. As an aerobics instructor or as a dj, it is all about controlling the crowd. I get caught up in my music at times and jump in front of the booth to dance, sort of commanding the audience to dance with me. It is hard to explain, the music just does this to me. I have to say that I play purely out of passion. I refuse to make style compromises that would get me more bookings. That would simply bore me. I play what I love, and that shows. What the people get is real, and that is what moves them. You have recently joined TEK Management who are responsible for the UK territory for you. You have a great passion to play more gigs here in the UK. How did the relationship with TEK transpire and what are your goals for the UK club scene? I have been releasing records for quite some time now, and most of my productions cross over between the Dutch hardstyle sound and the UK hard house sound. The Dutch scene is dominated by the Dutch bass at this time and it is all the crowd is going for it. The UK is much more open to innovation. Style influences are slowly incorporating Dutch and German elements into the UK sound, paving the road for the music that I play and produce. At some point, I got into contact with TEK Management, mainly because I am anxious to set foot on UK ground. I have played at some of Norway’s biggest events with several tidy artists and I played side by side with Riot!’s Ed Real at a party in NL. I also played with the Tinrib crew during an event in Amsterdam. My performance for Under The Sun during the Norwegian Summer Parade in Oslo this year lead to the booking at the tidy event in Norway in 2007. The management which has the rights for tidy in Norway were impressed by my energetic and powerful performance, as well as excellent choice of music and thought I’d fit right in. The experiences have taught me that the UK is the ultimate territory for me to play. Sure I have played in London on occasion, but I don’t think I was ready at the time. With Elements of Kaos, I prove that I have my own style and can put my own unique mark on the scene, given the opportunity. That is my goal in the long run anyway… Magdalena many thanks for doing this interview with us. Is there anything you’d like to say before we finish?
