Not many events get to the ripe old age of eight without some sense behind the helm - not that you’ll find much sense at four in the morning at Club 414. That Zoology has lasted so long is a testament to its fauna. Chris Dormer, better known as BSE, is one part of the zoological team studying partying habits in the average, or garden clubber at the 414. Agnes Klos went to brush up on her latin designations.
You might be like me – one of those people who had never heard about Zoology before its eighth birthday party on 6th November 2009. If you were lucky to be at the 414 on that day, maybe you were told by a friend the party was a must-go or you might have simply joined in by accident, you probably wanted to find out more about the history of Zoology and who stood behind the scenes at the event.
I was intrigued by the party and the people wearing T-shirts and trousers covered in a black and white chess-board pattern. There were strange eyes hanging from the ceiling and it seemed to me the party had not only its own fashion trend but also its own culture. I discovered a few DJs who I will definitely follow everywhere they go.
Many clubbers will tell you that everything is too expensive on New Years Eve and it is best to enjoy a party at a friend's house instead. However, you may still feel some yearning for a proper club party the very next day. This is where, it being the first Friday of the month, Zoo Years Day should be your answer as Zoology help kick-start 2010! Ahead of this exciting event with big names booked for the night including K90 and Lucy Fur, I met for a chat with Chris Dormer – one of the co-creators of Zoology - to get some tasty insights for HarderFaster readers.
Hi Chris, thank you for finding time to answer a few questions about your party. Could you tell us how your journey with Zoology started in the first place?
Dan (Latex Zebra) and I had put on some free parties in Richmond that were getting more and more people along. We then met Rich (RedCaT) who joined us in the last few Richmond parties. We decided to start making music and out of a few trips to the studio and pub Vinyl Zoo Records was born. After a successful launch party we wanted to do more and Zoology was the natural progression.
Why did you choose this name for the party?
It came from the label name, Vinyl Zoo, as we wanted both to be associated.
If you were to explain to a Zoology first-timer what the party is about, what would you say?
Zoology is a fun night, we’ve never taken ourselves too seriously. Our aim is to put on a friendly party with good music. We aim for a house party vibe in a club.
What is your process of selecting DJs for your parties?
We sit down and discuss who we’d like then Dan tells us who’s playing!
In all seriousness DJs are mainly Dan’s job but we all put forward names of people we’d like to play. We always try to get DJs that play good music – both well known names and up and coming DJs – if you play good music you can play for Zoology. As we don’t stick to only one genre we’re not restricted to one stable of DJs on a continuous rotation which is nice.
How would you describe the eighth birthday of Zoology on 6th November? Was it a success? What kind of problems did you encounter if any?
I would describe it as a fun night of good music, a good crowd and good times. I personally think it was a success, I can’t think of a time when a promoter wouldn’t want more people at their party but we had a good crowd down on Friday that made for a wicked night. The only problems we faced were the usual ones of being a bit rubbish in preparation and decoration but thankfully we get loads of help from T & Louise at the 414 and probably wouldn’t have made it to eight years without their support.
You play yourself at Zoology under the pseudonym B.S.E.? How long have you been DJing and could you describe your style to our readers?
I have been DJing for about 16 years I’d expect. Playing out - either on pirate radio stations in my youth, house parties, free parties and clubs - for at least 12 of those. I suppose I would describe my style as party techno. I’ve always liked the harder end of the spectrum, techno is my genre of choice, but Zoology doesn’t always lend itself to techno so I’ve been playing more tech-trance recently, although it’s usually more tech than trance.
Do you prefer promoting parties or playing at them?
There’s something to be said for turning up, dancing, playing, getting paid and going home but you can’t beat the feeling of seeing a rocking party with loads of smiling faces all enjoying themselves for 12 hours and thinking “I did this”.
From your point of view and your experience, what are the most essential ingredients of a successful party?
I’d say the most important thing is the vibe. I’ve been to places that had wicked DJ line-ups and the music was thumping all night, but if the atmosphere is wrong it throws a massive damper on things.
I might sound a bit cliché but I just spotted that you and I have birthday on exactly the same day: 27th December. It is something small but it has definitely put a smile on my face. Could you tell us about your plans and ambitions for the future? Any new projects in mind?
Next year Zoology kicks off with Zoo Years Day – I’ll probably be celebrating my birthday then so you should come along and make it a double celebration – and it really sets the tempo for next year’s parties. Personally I plan to get my ass back into the studio next year; I’ve been quite slack recently so you can expect a couple of solo efforts and also some collaborations with Latex Zebra, among others, filling your ears in 2010.
And finally, what is your biggest addition in life?
Addition? Errr... Not too sure...
Ambition? To be remembered for the right reasons

New Years Eve is hard work. Everywhere charges more to get in, it costs a fortune to get home in the morning and usually you wish you'd gone to a House party instead.
New Years Day however, is another matter. Prices have returned to normal and the next morning you can get home without any hassle as everything is back as it should be.
Zoology is extremely fortunate to fall on the first day of the new year and has a very special night lined up for you.
So go round your mates house on New Years Eve and come and party with us the next day.
Joining us on the night we have special guest K90 making his Zoology debut. He really needs little introduction but has been known for his massive anthems like Red Snapper, Breathe, Deliverance and shit load more. As a performer he has played the World over at some of the best parties. He now can add Zoology to that list.
Next up we have the Princess of Hard House Lucy Fur returning to Zoology. Having played at massive parties like Hard House Acadamy, Slinky, Tidy Weekenders at venues up and down the land.
We also have an old freind returning for a set Jaqstar, no stranger to the 414 as a long time Zoology fan and resident of Paradoxx, she makes her long awaited Zoology debut on Zoo Years Day.
Added to that the residents, and possibly another guest as well, and this promises to be quite a night.
