I've never done baby talk with my two, I've always talked to them like young adults and I feel their speech is much better than some of their friends. We never did the "this is a choo-choo" thing, it was always a 'train'. I feel they can articulate themselves really well, even my son who is 2. But obviously I'm biased. Talk to your kids as if they are stupid and they will talk to you like they are stupid. The other thing that irritates me (and there are a few examples in my own extended family) is when people get their kids to get up and do little show pieces, singing, dancing, gymnastics etc. When asked at family gatherings I always used to tell people that they are not performing monkeys.
