Propaganda V

Reported by Agnes Klos / Submitted 16-11-09 12:59

As one of the world’s biggest tech trance DJs, Marco V sets the pace. It’s no surprise then that his new album, Propaganda (Part 2) hopes to alter your thinking on the genre, keeping you loyal. Taking over the world as we know it? Agnes Klos found out more.

Hi Marco! Welcome back to HarderFaster – it has been two years since your last interview with us, so thanks for taking the time to sit down with us once again. I’m especially interested to hear a few words from you after your electrifying performance at London Insomnia Halloween on Friday 30th October at the Ministry of Sound.

What are your impressions of the club and the crowd at the Gallery?

A gig at the Gallery never disappoints! I seem to be getting a bit of a rotation going at the Gallery which I am really happy with! I showcased my whole album that night and the crowd got really into it. I even had people from the crowd coming up to ask what tracks I was playing from my album. Their reactions were a good sign of things to come.

Can you tell us how your journey with music started for you?

Well it is a far stretch from what I play now, I used to really be into hip hop back in the day! I used to get really involved in all kinds of mixing battles and championships. Maybe one day I’ll really surprise you all and drop some of that into a set!

You are considered to be one of the most influential producers of our time, with your music shaping the modern tech-trance arena. But do you consider yourself first producer and then DJ or the other way around? Which do you enjoy more?

It seems that one comes with the other these days. I started out as a DJ but as I came to produce more, I really found a passion for it. I love doing both! But if we were going to split hairs, you could say I like to produce slightly more then DJing. Only just...

How do you think your sound has evolved over the years and what has driven the process?

My music definitely has more vocals in it now and I have probably slowed down the pace just a bit. But it still has, and will always have, the same bass driven energetic sounds.

Your DJ sets also feature a diverse range of genres as well, for example finishing your set at Trance Energy last year with house track, Rise Up. How important is it to bring in a range of sounds to your music?

I seem to get that question a lot! But, to get technical, it was actually a techno bootleg of that song. So not quite the house track everyone is speaking off. To answer your question though, I don’t really mind what style of music I drop in my set, as long as it is working for me, and the crowd are digging it – I’m easy!

You won the Best Tech House DJ Award in Ibiza this year, competing with such big names as Dubfire, Funkagenda, Laurent Garnier, M.A.N.D.Y., Marco Carola, Radio Slave and Steve Lawler. How did you feel accepting the award? Did you expect it at all?

Of course I am pleased with every award I get! Tech house wouldn’t be the first category people associate me with, but I felt very honoured. If anything it confirmed that Marco V isn’t completely trance and/or techno and shows the diversity of my music. One thing is for sure, I didn’t expect it at all, but I’m not complaining.

Why is your new album Propaganda divided into two parts? Was it intentional? Why such a choice of the name?

The idea really just came to me after I released how much content I had, and there was no way I could release it all on one album! So the two part album concept was born. As for the meaning of Propaganda, if you look up Propaganda in the dictionary, that is exactly what I want to achieve with my music – I want to spread the sound that I really like.

The first part of Propaganda was launched in July at Ministry of Sound this year which turned out to be a massive success. How did the audience react to Propaganda – Part 2 at Halloween Gallery on Friday?

The crowd at the Gallery was amazing on Friday night. The mood was electrified by the sea of crazy Halloween costumes which boosted the atmosphere ten fold! But I can’t complain about the crowd for Part 1 either, each time my album has been very well received!

What is your inspiration when producing in the studio and what’s the weirdest thing you’ve included in your music?

I am always getting new inspiration! But in terms of the most random thing you can find in my music? Hmm, sometimes it is a sample or a random bass line, or just the other day I found some great lyrics I could use. I always have my ears pricked.

What equipment do you use to get your sounds?

Well most of my sounds come from soft synths like the Predator and hardware like the miniMoog.

Please give us a tip or trick for a new producer to learn.

There isn’t just one tip or trick that will help you to learn, there are many! And it all depends what style of music you want to create. Don’t be afraid to test out new things. I can say one thing though, practice makes perfect.

What do you think makes an ordinary DJ great?

Originality! I have a lot of respect for a DJ who can hold a crowd but sticks to his own sound. That can be everything from very commercial or deep underground. The real talent and respect earned comes from those who do their own thing and work hard at it, no one likes a copy cat.

2009 has definitely been a generous year for you; with your Top 10 Mix radio show being snapped up by FM stations around the globe, a rework of your biggest ever record – Simulated and of course the delivery of your latest artist album. What have you got planned for 2010?

I have just finished a remix from my old classic Southside SpinnersLuvstruck which I am really happy with. I have a few other remixes in the works for next year as well. The biggest thing for me will be all the touring promoting my new album! I will still be releasing a number of tracks off the album as singles early in 2010, so stay tuned.

What exciting new venue have you been to recently and what made it so good?

I had an amazing night at this club called Bora Bora in Tunisia. The club is a massive open air venue and it just had the best vibe inside!

Some quick questions:

How would you describe yourself as a person?

I am a perfectionist but on a healthy level.

What is your biggest challenge in life?

My schedule can be quite sporadic, so staying in shape is definitely one of my biggest challenges.

What are you the most scared of?

My wife!

What do you listen to on your ipod?

MGMT

What are your guilty pleasures?

Haha I have none, you should never feel guilty about anything

Thanks for taking time to talk to us and we will hear you playing next in…?

I am back in the UK on the 20th November for the Ibiza Reunion.
