Looking back, I think history is kinder on John Major than we were at the time.
Thatcher was another Blair, there was a massive sense of relief after Labour's disastrous tenure during the 70s and the complete break down of working life, but she lost the plot later in her time at the top.

Completely agree. The world seemed a brighter, more hopeful place when Labour won in '97. And for a while it was true. Although he utterly trashed his reputation by getting into bed with Bush I will nevertheless always be grateful for him bringing in the Freedom Of Information Act. A rare example of a truly progressive piece of legislation.
