Happy birthday Tranzaction! Interview with Avaline & Charlie G

Reported by Joey.v / Submitted 26-03-06 17:14

The Tranzaction team consists of Chris Johnson aka Avaline (head honcho from the start) and boy wonder Charlie G. Between them they run one of the best weekly club nights in the UK, hold a busy DJ diary, produce top selling tunes and remixes and run a label, not to mentioning writing for the world’s biggest music mags and generally causing mayhem on the scene.

Avaline is the man behind the massive anthems such as ‘Never Sever’ and ‘Stay’ plus countless others and has been a breath of fresh air on the production scene this past year. Rising up to DJ duties alongside Charlie last year, they set to take over clubland with the punkstyle sound he is notorious for creating. He is also the main promoter of the night and tours and is basically the action in Tranzaction.

Charlie is 21 years old and is the main weekly resident, label manager, iDJ trance reviewer, producer for Tranzaction and Monster Tunes, plus remixer for the likes of Drizzly and Nukleuz. He is also a resident at The Dance Academy and has tons more arrows to his bow, but never manages to stop or slow down or be content. He’s regarded as one of the scenes brightest prospects and also one of the most grounded!

Joey V catches up with the pair to chat about all the different aspects of their job at Tranzaction Towers and the build up to their massive 6th Birthday!!

Avaline

Hello Charlie and Avaline, how are things going with you?

A: Yes I’m well thank you. Things are moving very fast at the moment. We have never been so busy but it’s all good and let’s face it, we asked for it!

C: All good! Very busy with the night, label and churning out the tunes and even bigger and more important, planning our birthday bash — but more on that later!!

Charlie, you’ve only just turned 21 and you have multiple releases played on Radio 1 and on big albums and if that wasn’t enough you are the resident of Cornwall’s most successful night! You must have big plans for the future?

C: I definitely want to take things further and everything that I have achieved is great, but hasn’t really sunk in and isn’t yet at the point I want to reach, I think it’s important to always push yourself further in all walks of life, but yes, big big plans for sure, it’s just about making them all happen, and keeping the vibe alive!

Avaline, you’re not originally from the land of the pasty, what inspired you to move down here and start Tranz@ction?

A: I drove our original ressie to the club about 7 years ago on a Saturday night and fell in love with the place. The venue has got an amazing vibe to it. I met the owner, Tim Vigus, and we discussed the idea of putting on a hard dance event to try and fill the venue on a Friday, which I did and the place was rocking, the atmosphere was just like it was back in the day. Something special happened, Tranzaction was born and the club asked us to go weekly. I didn’t so much as move down, just never really made it back home to Wales!! There’s also the added bonus of the sun/sand/night life etc…

How did you stumble across young Charlie G, and did you sign him up as resident straight away?

A: Haha, young Charlie was discovered on a Tranzaction tour around 3 years ago in a deepest darkest place. I instantly noticed his passion for the music and that his eyes were open — he watched every move the DJs made, learning from their every move. We got on very well and it would of been a sin to leave him where I found him so I gave him a set in the Funkyaction room at Tranzaction. He gained experience then respect, moved on to the big room and has now become Tranzaction’s secret weapon and main resident and label manager, the boy is on fire!!

Boy wonder Charlie G

Tell us about the next release on Tranzaction Recordings?

C: Ok, well it’s my debut on Tranzaction so I’m really looking forward to it and happy about the whole release. It’s come about quite quick just due to instant crowd and DJ support for the tracks. The A side is a hardstyle remix by myself and Headstorm of ‘Sleepless’ which was my tech trance debut on Monster Tunes last year, it is f*ckin mad and simply rocks! On the flip is ‘Mentalism’ a Joy Energizer type f*cked up hard dancer which also features a hot hot hot Avaline mix which is fresh and so different it’s almost a separate track. It should be out around the end of April — bring that on!!

Tranz@ction has recently been voted ‘Runner-Up Best Small Club Night’ in the UK at the 2005 HDA, but it couldn’t have been plain sailing from the outset… or could it?

A: It’s been far from plain sailing. I think that anybody who has tried to run a dance event knows the ups and downs involved, especially in a weekly night in one of the least populated areas of the UK on a Friday!! We count on people travelling to the club from many miles away, which makes promoting the club a geological nightmare and was very hard work on my own for the first few years.

But ask any DJ/artist that has performed at Tranzaction, the crowd are dedicated to the music and mad for it, which creates an atmosphere and experience that makes it worth everybody’s effort getting there. Eventually being noticed by the HDA and all the dance press is, I believe, well deserved and we are so excited by the prospect of being amongst the best nights in the UK. Tranzaction is stronger than ever and the blood sweat and tears have paid off.

C: It’s been a battle to get up amongst the elite and to be at the level we are today, basically due to hard work and forward thinking, keeping things fun and about the clubbers and taking risks… daring to be different! It’s a great achievement for a night in the Deepest Darkest South to be considered one of the best, and rightly deserved too!!

Every single Friday night, you hear, see and mix alongside different top DJs, who is your favourite and why?

C: Ahh that’s such a tuff one, for the simple fact it is every week and there are so many covering many different styles. Cally and Juice would be my favourite for the party vibe and crowd interaction. Also Mark EG who never fails to surprise with even crazier antics. Others would be Alex Kidd, Vinylgroover, and on the technical side, Eddie and Kutski.

A: That is a hard one, I can’t really chose a fave, but some of the DJs that spring to mind as being firm club faves are: Mark EG, Yoji Biomehanika, Cally and Juice, Alex Kidd, Andy Whitby, ‘Vinylgroover, Lisa Pin-up, Organ Donors, Ed Real, M-zone and Mauro Picotto. Basically any DJs that cause a crowd explosion and party vibe, we don’t book bad DJs so if they are on the line-up they rock!!

You are now well and truly established and much loved in Cornwall, have you ever considered taking your event to other areas of the UK, or even the world?

A: Yes what we have is too special not to take it on the road and we have already put on many collaboration nights with Bionic/Cardiff, Kaos/Swansea, Escape/Swansea, Wildchild/London Koolwaters/Bristol and over a dozen tours up and down the UK, but this year we will really be concentrating on pushing the brand and label. We are just so busy with all the other bits so we are currently looking for an agent to take on the tour bookings. But confirmed this year so far are tours to Swansea, Bristol, Ibiza, Australia, the Netherlands and possibly Japan, which will see both Avaline and Charlie G headlining amongst some huuuuuge names!!

C: Well what more do I need to say, look out Tranzaction’s about and we’re gonna rock our sound to the masses!! Better buy up the sat-nav and find me a passport!

So how come Avaline, Tranzaction has been running for almost 6 years, but you’ve only just started to DJ at it yourself for the past year?

A: Soley because of the production really. I never had an urge to be a DJ, it’s just the buzz of playing your own records out is immense and keeping the so called punk style sound going through the set and the introduction of CDJs has made it easier to be playing stuff out within hours of leaving the studio and being able to watch crowd reactions and make any changes before tunes go to press. That’s very helpful.

Who’s better?

C: Well, I’ve got a fair few years practising on him yet and I do my best to smash it to bits every time I’m unleashed, like a little caged beast but… I guess Avaline b2b Charlie G is better, alright!!

A: Charlie is defiantly better. But together we can be dangerous.

Charlie you have recently been assigned the job of reviewing 10 trance tunes a month for iDJ magazine, how are you finding that role?

C: Another ambition and dream fulfilled. It’s great to be sent the best tracks from around the world so upfront and to be the probably the youngest writer for them on the same page as John “00” Flemming is all pretty mad. I always wanted to write for a magazine when I was in school and have always read the likes of iDJ, so it’s just total madness, but part of my job, which is fresh, and I really enjoy!

Would you give up your music career for an editor job in the local rag?

C: Would I give up the music side?? No way!! The biggest thing for me is still DJing. Everything else is extra, playing my own tunes is great, reviewing tracks I get sent and get to play is great and running a night is also top but it’s all built on the DJing, so no-way, wouldn’t give this up for anything!!

Between you, you run a huge weekly night, own a record label, produce and release music, remix other artist’s work, write reviews for iDJ magazine and obviously DJ around the country… do you ever get to rest with a cuppa tea and a biscuit, or a pint and a pasty?

C: Sh*t, when you put it like that, we need a holiday man!! And I think our trouble is when we do rest it’s with a few too many pints (if ya catch my drift) as at heart, we’re ravers and Mr Avaline is the biggest wrongun going so we’re always on the go. Does seem like a lot on though, maybe it’s time to hire a sexy little secretary!

A: I agree with Charlie we need a sexy little secretary! As you may well know there never seems to be time for anything other than work in this game. But I have recently made a promise to myself to take at least a day a week off this summer and head to the beach or take the boat out (then I’m safe, Charlie is scared of boats) and generally chill out. Cornwall is a great place to be in the summer with plenty of coastal bars and restaurants to simmer down and watch the sun set!

I could be your secretary. I have a lovely A-cup. Interested?

C: Hmm, we have strict requirement guidelines for a secretary and unfortunately I don’t think you would match the criteria. We do need someone to make tea though and tidy up after ourselves and generally run around as our bitch! Actually good idea for a comp, any HF ladies wantin a job with the Tranzaction team, please email some snaps.

A: Right, please send us full reference and a holiday photo and remember there’s no I in team!

Finally let’s hear of the 6th birthday bash coming up! I demand details!

A: Well the 6th birthday is going to be simply massive!!! It’s on Good Friday 14th April at L2 club this year. The dress code is going to be army/combat, don’t know why, just is! We will have two pre club parties on, starting at 7pm. The club will open 9pm till 4am, there will be loads of press covering the event, most of it will be recorded for radio/internet broadcast and it is guaranteed to be uber messy and go down in clubbing history as a party to remember.
The line-up is… check this out!

Main: Eddie Halliwell, Yoji Biomehanika, Mark EG, Avaline, Charlie G

Funkyaction: La Casa Martin (live percussion), Damien James

Limited guaranteed entry tickets, £7. Price more on the door. Get your camo on and please arrive early! See you down the front. Love you long time — Tranzaction.

C: What more needs to be said, that sh*t is seriously sick and it’s gonna be the party of the year. Where else can you get all that for such a cheap price in an intimate friendly, fresh and f*ckin exciting club!! It’s gonna go off big time so make sure you’re a part of it!!

Well we’ve certainly been told, and I for one will definitely be showing my mug at a club with that sort of line up. Thanks for your time guys, and thanks for bringing a top notch dance event to Cornwall! My secretary offer still stands.
