Meet Twisted's newest resident: John '00' Fleming

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 20-02-06 14:12

Twisted has a new resident, and one which is guaranteed to rock your socks off. He’s a DJ that has never left the DJ Mag top 100 and one who is always embracing new sounds and technology.

It is of course non other than international DJing superstar, John ‘00’ Fleming. The mastermind behind the ubercool and globally respected White Label compilations, and the owner of a hectic diary constantly taking him across the world, this is undoubtedly a very special treat for Twisted fans.

Last year psy trance was big business as the producers from across the planet started to release truck loads of sublime creations, and it’s just one of a plethora of sounds that John likes to champion, infusing it into his trailblazing performances. Highly addictive and mouth wateringly juicy, this blueprint will act at the benchmark which will form the the future sound of Twisted. John is always a very outspoken individual on HarderFaster so we were thrilled to get to interview him again.

It’s just been announced that you’re taking up a residency at Twisted for the year? How many times can we look forward to seeing you play?

As many times as I can because I love it there!! Sometimes worldwide commitments will make me miss the odd date, but we are working hard to make sure this doesn’t happen. I played the very first Twisted party all those years ago, so it’s great to still be involved with the club night.

At the same time Twisted will be changing its style of music slightly, what can we expect?

I think Twisted seems to be going back to their roots and offering punters a whole range of music throughout the evening. This takes us back to the good old days of clubland when things where at their best. Twisted is open 8 hours (!) so there is plenty of time to programme the night and expose new music to the dancefloor. It really annoys me when doors open at clubs and the first DJ is playing 100 MPH at full volume.… Why???? I’m sure this puts people of coming in early?!! Twisted look to programme the night professionally, having easy going music early on in the night, allowing people to come in early to meet with friends and socialize. As the night goes on, so will the music and things will get serious!

A lot of you recent work has been heavily influenced by the psy trance sound. Will this continue into 2006

I think the psy trance scene is one of the best in the world. Naive people who don’t understand it think it’s all about hippies running naked in a free party in the middle of a forest!! Under the wing of ‘psy’ falls all styles of music — breaks, progressive, techno, trance and traditional full-on. Psy should really be replaced with the world ‘underground’. We all know you find the best music on the underground scene.

You’ve recently been an advocate of the 00 DJ, a solution which allows DJs to play in clubs without the usual worries associated with computers. Do you think solutions like this are the way forward for DJs?

I think there will be an ongoing battle between CD players and DJs using computers. I don’t think either will win. The two are leaders and the way forward for the 21st Century DJ.

I’ve heard a rumour that despite the fact you having a potentially near fatal boating accident at the end of the summer last year, you’ve been back out there doing it again. Do you have no fear?

Eight weeks after my accident I was back out on the water!! I love the sea and have been doing watersports since I was 12 years old. It was a one-off accident that (I hope!) will never happen again. I love the sea too much.

Astrix was an act that you truly thought was spectacular last year. What names that we may not have heard of do you tip for next year?

There are too many to mention. Wizzy Noise from Greece are an act that I’m currently supporting. Their music is groundbreaking and a breath of fresh air. I’ve been pestering Twisted to book them, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that this happens.

Everyone seems to think Brazil is going to be the next Ibiza. Have you played they yet? And what are your thoughts on Brazil as a clubbing holiday destination?

Brazil will never be the next Ibiza. I think the Costa Del Sol will be!!! I lost my heart from Ibiza a few year ago, it’s turned into a package tour mayhem. For me the whole musical spirit of Ibiza has gone, it’s no longer a place for music lovers.

Brazil seems to have the musical spirit of the old Ibiza. If you love music and want a place that shares this passion, then Brazil will be the place for you. The Brazilian festivals and clubs are some of the best in the world, they’re truly amazing.

You released a couple of storming tracks last year and another successful White Label Euphoria. Any production plans for this year?

I’ve got plenty this year! I’ve recently finished an EP with The Digital Blonde and my follow up single with Christopher Lawrence. These will both be released on JOOF recordings. Also later on in the year I have my own artist album! So I’ve got an exciting year ahead.

You play all over the world. What incredible places have you got lined up in the near future, and do you have any personal favourite countries to play?

There’s too many places to mention! Brazil obviously has a special place in my heart, also the same can be said for Japan, again for their breathtaking festivals. The USA continues to be a very strong territory for me. Let’s not forget Twisted in London!!

You must spend a lot of time flying. Do you have any tips for staving off journey boredom?

I live with my laptop computer. Many tracks have been born at 30,000 feet!! Sometimes I need a longer flight so that I can finish that magical riff!

Thanks for your time John.

Saturday 4th March is a must for your clubbing diaries. Month three of 2006 sees the return of London’s favourite monthly! TWISTED!

The club night with more themes than a chameleon has disguises has pulled a trooper out of its bag this time round. Saturday 4th March marks a very warm welcome to the Twisted Heroes!

You can forget the lycra, flowing capes and X-ray vision, Twisted’s Heroes are all bearers of a different kind of power – the power to make you dance! We’ve called a summit of the scene’s leading powers this night led by our brand new resident! We are ecstatic to welcome JOHN OO FLEMING as Global Hero to the Twisted fold. Northern Hero LEE HASLAM will be flying down the M1 at a speed not known to man to join our very own London Hero – IAN BETTS. Twisted Hero Mr TREVOR MCLACHLAN aint letting us down, and to date this hero has not missed a Twisted event since appointed resident! Lastly but by no means least are the super talents of our Underground hero – LATEX ZEBRA. With all this in mind, we are sure you’ll agree, the main room will ooze more energy and power than Krypton itself!

In room 2 we’re importing a sound which has proved more than popular in the past, and a space where you can go and recharge when the main floor gets too much. Powerful house and breaks music delivered by the talents that are VOODOO BASS, SNAKE and LIKA MARQUES.

From: dean peters on 27th Feb 2006 17:29.09
The word legend is used too freely in todays clubbing/ djing scene, however this word sums up John to a tee. Fantastic DJ, probably one of the best technical DJs ever, who knows how to rock a party. Ive had the honour to play alongside John on numerous occasions and he is a perfect role model for any aspiring dj - he has it all....and a lovely bloke too. Great to see him back at Twisted....
