Review of Progression Records Boat Party on, well, the ocean wave Reported by josie / Submitted 30-08-06 20:19 What the hell is going on with trance in London? It’s either The Gallery or nowt, and apart from Vaccine, The Gallery is pretty mainstream stuff. Trancegeneration’s solo events have not been forthcoming, and Serious will not be recommencing their weekly nights in London. In such a chilly climate, the trance fan must gird their loins and seek out the more unusual event. Hence a sunny July afternoon found me and the bloke on a pavement at Bank waiting for . . . of all things . . . a boat upon which to rave. After avoiding the eyes of the assorted djs, fans and freaks boozing hard by the side of the road, and attracting the attention of bemused tourists, we’re ushered onboard. In brief, there’s a longish room downstairs — about water level, devoted to house, another upstairs for trance, and small spaces outdoors fore and aft (get me) where the wind whips your hair about and you can drink in ‘the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying’. A very listenable warm-up indeed from the likeable Eddie Vega was followed by a set from Darren Tate. Darren began proceedings quite slow and techy but picked up pace, and injected quite a summery vibe into his set. Tunes played included the gorgeously euphoric Sunny Lax — ‘Puma’, Above & Beyond’s ‘No One On Earth’ and the languorous ‘Good For Me’, and PvD’s ‘The Other Side’. I don’t care what people say, Darren is a talented motherf*cker. So what if he’s been in the charts, so what if Jurgen Vries was an accessible, even commercial alias, he’s a talented producer and dj and he should get credit for it. I’ve never seen him play where everyone in the crowd didn’t go wild. Next up was Mark Loader, aka the very talented Factor X, and the man behind both the boat party and the Progression Records label. He launched his hard trance set with his own utterly glorious Usher — ‘Yeah’ trance remake. We had an ultra early sneaky preview of this in Ibiza and I swear to God, when this went on, house, trance and hard dance lovers alike leapt up and danced like men possessed. It is a f**king tune — you heard it here first. Mark also played Matrix and Futurebound — ‘American Beauty‘, and his own remix of Faithless’ ‘We Come One’. Finally, Ali Wilson and Matt Smallwood of Tekelec Records played back to back — a set incorporating trance and hard house and everything in between, moving from stuff like Marco V’s ‘Automanual’ and ‘False Light‘, Azure’s ‘Sunset’, and ‘Venus’ from Stoneface & Terminal, to more generic hard house towards the end. It wasn’t the most upfront and euphoric event I’ve ever been to (which would kind of be the ideal for me), but nonetheless extremely enjoyable. The crowd were very mixed, featuring a significantly large cyber hard house contingent, but everyone was so up for having fun, entering into the Best of British and beachwear themes with gusto. Among the highlights were an eight foot inflatable shark, a guy in cricket whites, panama, and white vest, lots of armbands and Hawaiian shirts, and best of all, a most enterprising clubber wearing a rubber ring and carrying a swimming float with ‘f**ked’ on one side and ‘tune’ on the other, which pretty much covered everything. Also on board were a lot of very beautiful girls in bikini tops, including the same two permanently installed in the bathroom in front of the mirror, whose casual, tousled look obviously wasn’t all that casual. Coolest, and yet most surreal of all, is trundling down the river to the accompaniment of dance music and beer. You see all sorts — the Gherkin, Tower Bridge, the Lloyds building, Tower 42, Canary Wharf, the Thames Flood Barrier, the Dome along with that paperclip thing outside, and the David Beckham Football Academy. Elegant townhouses overlooking the river give way to an Industrial landscape, with wrecks of boats clustered together, and sculptures made from the iron on the shore. The rusting hulks moored on the Thames have their own stricken dignity — a kind of shabby grace. Sadly, due to rising costs and increasingly conservative noise restrictions on the river, Progression Records will not be running any more boat parties. We wish them well for their Halloween party. And now for the party political broadcast — don’t let the stumbling trance scene in London persuade you that it’s time to quit clubbing and devote your time to charity work and dinner parties. There’s light on the horizon . . . I sincerely hope.
