Unity with Steve Hill

Reported by Craig Paxton / Submitted 27-04-10 07:48

Unity - An ordering of all elements so that each contributes to a unified aesthetic effect. Some events happen so rarely that when they do, the internet is buzzing with activity, news spreads like wildfire and a general feeling of excitement and anticipation is almost tangible. The first moon landing, the large hadron collider, David Beckham stubbing his toe, Simon Cowell's eyebrows actually moving, Scotland beating anyone - at anything other than Curling... Sunday the 2nd of May is one such event, with the dance music equivalent of a solar eclipse taking place at Union in Vauxhall.

With a DJ line-up featuring more heavyweights than a weight watchers roll-call, and a sound system fatter than a sumos ankle, Unity is serving up a musical feast of biblical proportions. As the date fast approaches, we took some time out to catch up with one of the scenes icons and ask him what gets him out of bed in the morning.

Steve Hill is a name intrinsically linked with the uplifting, melodic hard trance sound and provider of some of the most jaw dropping sets to have been witnessed in UK Clubs over the last decade.

So Steve, what does get you out of bed in the morning?

Usually one of my two kids (Lily, 3 or Mason, 2) gets me out of bed wanting breakfast - they're a great alarm clock. Same time everyday! I've usually finished all my e-mails by 8am because of that! Then off to the gym.

You left our shores quite some time ago now and have been enjoying the sunshine in the Southern Hemisphere. You're obviously still very involved in the Dance Music scene; can you tell us about what it's like down under and how it compares to the UK?
Hard Dance is a pretty universal sound although the main difference between the UK and Australia is that they prefer the Euro sound (German Hard Trance / Hardstyle) over the UK sound (Hard House / Hard Dance). NZ is much like the UK though. It's very happening here in Oz, lots of festivals and international acts touring as well as a strong local scene. Great place to be!

For those of us who haven’t seen you for a while, tell us about what’s been happening with you and your upcoming plans?

I'm currently finishing off my next artist album due for release in July 2010. It's 5CD's featuring over 100 of my productions / remixes. The biggest project I've ever embarked on - but great fun and I'm always up for a challenge! I also run Masif (CD's / digital / merchandise / events / tours) and a weekly club night here in Sydney called Impulse.

You’ve pretty much been there, done that and got the t-shirt as far as the scene goes. How did you first get involved and what is it that keeps you coming back for more?

I was a DJ in NZ who moved to the UK for a couple of years to check it out. I landed a job at Pure Groove Records, which was home to record labels Tripoli Trax and Y2K amongst others, and a residency at Frantic! Great start to my career in Hard Dance. I still love the scene as much as ever. It's not as big as it was but it is more diverse and constantly evolving so it never goes stale. I can't see myself getting bored with it.

As a young DJ in London, promoters very much wield the power and it can be tough to get the gigs that make a difference. What did you do in your early career to get noticed and what advice would you give to an aspiring young DJ?

There's a difference between promoting yourself and annoying a promoter. Get involved. Be positive. Prove you're not there for the glory. People love hiring people with genuine passion. Be Yourself. Enjoy whatever comes your way. Some of the biggest breaks for me came from being in the right place at the right time as well as sheer hard work - so sticking around can really pay dividends!

Your career has now spanned more than a decade, you’ve produced over 200 floor fillers and played some of the biggest venue’s across the globe; If you had to pick your top 5 highlights, what would they be and why?

Nothing beats playing at Camden Palace for me, that's my spiritual home. I'm sitting here trying to narrow my moments into a top 5 and I can't - which I'm proud of. I've met so many great people, worked with a lot of talented individuals and played to some of the best crowds you've ever seen - I'll die a happy man!

How do you relax when you’re not sorting out that next gig or in the studio?

It's a running joke over here that I watch Judge Judy, clubbers give me her merchandise at gigs for a laugh - very funny! I watch TV to chill out usually Spooks, Shameless, Masterchef, Come Dine with Me. I'm a big fan of Gordon Ramsay and love cooking to chill out too! Would rather cook all afternoon than spend it on an Xbox or something, beer helps me chill out too!

Which track, dance or otherwise, do you wish you had produced and why?

Who wrote these questions? They're bloody hard! Dance wise I wish I'd written something like Binary Finary '1998' (Paul Van Dyk Mix), when I first heard that at the first Creamfields I thought that was the chord progression to beat, it still is! I'm a big fan of a range of people's work from Simple Minds and Depeche Mode to Dr Dre and Snoop Dog to BK and Technikal!

Quick fire round – MTV Cribs Style! What’s in your fridge at home?

Lots! Coke Zero, a few Heinekens, lots of fruit and vegetables, yoghurt, milk, lots of deli snacks . . . gees . . . just looking at it - it's nothing special!

Where does the magic happen?

In the studio!

What’s your favourite sandwich?

Can't beat a decent bacon sandwich with Heinz ketchup!

Can I borrow your lawnmower?

Don't have one! You could borrow my BBQ if you can lift 100kg in one go though!

Steve, thanks for your time and good luck with everything.
