Mind and Matter aka Alessandro Pintus and Celio Costa are now a firm fixture in the Psychedelic Trance scene and their position has been cemented further by being signed to the legendary label Iono-Music! Having both produced under other aliases over the years - Synesthetic, Bonanza Bros & DJ Suspect - we decided it was time to catch up with these guys to find out more about them and their most recent project!

Tell us where you grew up and what influence you think this had on you as a person?

ALEX: I grew up in the island of Sardinia (Italy), in the city of Olbia - one of most important spots in the island, with stunning nature, beautiful beaches and good Italian food. I can't deny this place has influenced my entire life as a person and I love to spend time there with my family.

CELIO: I grew up in a small village in the central coast of Portugal, called Andrinos (Leiria district), it’s a place where everybody knew each other and we lived a very country life style.
I used to spend my days building cabanas and tree houses, looking for bird nests, stealing fruit, fishing on the rivers, playing football, taking long bicycle rides and wood-car racing. We use to be a group of 7 creative and fearless friends. I guess the love for nature and outdoor events came from there.

Do you remember your first encounter with music? What was it?

ALEX: my first encounter with music was at the age of 4 or 5 when I used to play cassette tapes and vinyl on my mother's Hi-fi system at home. It was mainly Italian songwriters such as De Andre', Lucio Battisti and Jovanotti (as far as I can remember), as well some international stuff such as LA LAMBADA, LA BAMBA, ROD STEWART and some mixed up 60’s and 70’s music too.

CELIO: Well, my first encounter with music was for sure with my older brother… he used to listen to bands like led Zeppelin, trd1100, Dire Straits, U2, Joy Division, etc…

When did you discover your musical talent?

ALEX: talent comes from practicing and learning I believe, at the age of 5 I used to play on the ground, on the walls and on every possible surface with two pieces of wood made as drumsticks to emulate the playing of drums, because I was so fascinated by this instrument - I wanted to have them and learn it so badly. Later on; my parents got me a classical guitar and I went to classes for some time. But I still wanted to learn the drums and I actually didn't want to learn guitar at all.

CELIO: At school, I have very good memories of the music lessons. Then, my youth arrived and I went on a different path… I guess I re-connected with the music scene around 2000 and started producing electronic music a few years later. By 2006 I felt that producing electronic music was what I really wanted to do.

When did you discover Psy-trance and what was it that resonated with you?

ALEX: back in 2005 in Amsterdam, I’d been hanging around the infamous UNDERGROUND RAVE PARTIES, in places like Ruigoord, and Danzigerbocht. There was this one party with Troll's Scientists -that blew my mind and made me fall in love with psychedelic Goa trance music, (actually I think it was called Suomisaundi but I was not aware of this difference at the time).

CELIO: It was in 1997, Manmademan, ‘Welcome to the World’… which to me felt like ‘welcome to everything’. That was 23 years ago – ever since then I’ve been exploring psy-music and its vibrant culture.

What or who are your biggest influences and inspirations?

ALEX: I think the moment I started to get interested in psychedelic music and tripping out was when I got into a band named PORCUPINE TREE; which was highly influenced by the Pink Floyd sound but in a more modern way. I have always been fascinated by the fusion of psychedelic rock and Goa trance. One of the bands which gave me this bridge was definitely OZRIC TENTACLES.

CELIO: Well, as you can imagine, I had several different influences through the years, but Joy Division, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and Tool were maybe the most important ones. Nowadays, I’m more into the ‘Zenon style’, with serious psychedelic and progressive sounds… currently I choose producers like Electrypnose, Sumiruna, Grub and Monogram to listen to.

Describe yourselves in three words?

ALEX: Focused but Dreamy and sometimes Emotional.

CELIO: Eclectic, Simple and Honest.

How did you come about working together? What do you bring as a double act, as opposed to single artists?

We have known each other for a long time now (since 2007) and both of us always liked the progressive side of the psy-trance, so in 2013 we talked about getting together and making a progressive project with strong psychedelic vibes and serious heavy bass lines… and ‘Mind & Matter’ was born! We believed that two visions were better than one in making this project.

What’s been your biggest achievements in life?

ALEX: I don’t have a single achievement that I can recognise specifically; more like a series of experiences and achievements that I enjoyed, such as: living in different countries and cities over the last 15 years and mostly connecting to music in every one of those experiences. Also graduating as an Audio Engineer from the SAE (School of Audio Engineering) Amsterdam. After that I started spending more time on music and focused more carefully on production - in many styles.

CELIO: So far, my biggest achievement was to have travelled 5 out of the 7 continents.

What does music mean to you?

ALEX: music - it's my job, as well as my passion and hobby. I have been working as a ghost producer for the last 6 years as well as doing my own productions in different styles of music not specifically just one genre.

CELIO: music means life… without music there is no life!

What do you love most about being artists? & what do you like the least?

ALEX: being an artist and producer is very interesting and entertaining; especially travelling to so many countries as I have done over the past years, and meeting so many other people and artists who I love to share my art with.

CELIO: That’s a tricky question. What I love the most is to be able to touch people’s hearts with my music… What I like the least? To be honest, there are a few downsides but I prefer to not talk about them as I’d rather focus on the good parts!

Tell us what you have in the pipeline release and gig wise…

ALEX and CELIO: We are about to release an album of remixes from our original album ‘Fragile Nature’ on Iono-Music which features some killer remixes of our tracks and we’re very excited about this! We also have a few more singles tracks to follow.

Where do you hope you’ll be a year from now?

ALEX: I want to be able to be continuing what I have been doing with production and music, improving the quality of my art and to continue to do more travelling and enjoy all the many varied experiences and fun that comes along with this.

CELIO: Well, I hope to remain healthy and still able to make music! Then, the rest will come…
