DHF presents… new hardstyle resident Nutty T

DHF hardstyle resident Nutty T is a man of many talents. After his early tracks were turned down by labels for being too fast, he went out and started his own, Nutty Trance Records. Over 40 releases later, his labels are multiplying and like the man himself, really coming into their own. With the DHF Spring Edition coming around at Hidden on Friday 14 May faster than the Easter bunny on carrot food, we spoke to the hardest fastest nutter of them all about the most evil and sinister hardstyle around.
Hi James, thanks for taking some time out to answer some questions for your friends on HarderFaster.
No problem.
First, a bit of background. Where are you from and what inspired you to first start playing and producing dance music? And hardstyle? Are you classically trained or is music something you fell into over the years?
Well I’m from Doncaster originally and now living in Surrey. Basically it all started years ago when I used to listen to the Prodigy, and I wanted to do tunes that were a bit different, unique, and my music was a little trance/UK old skool hardcore-type sound. I then heard Cosmic Gate — Fire Wire and thought, I really like this sort of style, then my music took a bit of a hard trance twist, and what finally got me into hardstyle were the sounds of DJ Zany — Sky High and Deepack — The Prophecy and the rest just went from there.
Why the name ‘Nutty T’? What does ‘Nutty trance’ mean to you?
I get asked this question all the time, so it’s good it came up to shed some light on it. The label was originally going to be called Reaper Records and be hard trance. Unfortunately it had already been taken, so I wondered: “What would be a really mad name that would make us stand out from the crowd?” and I just thought, “It’s gonna have some mad and nutty hard trance tunes on it, so why not Nutty Trance?” The name just stuck and then I just shortened it to Nutty T for my name. It’s turned mainly from a hard trance label to a hardstyle label now and people often say: “Why Nutty Trance?” Basically, the scene emerged from hardtrance and it’s Nutty so you never know what you’re going to get!
You’ve DJed alongside Ed Real, Sam Punk, Dave Joy, Alex Kidd, Organ Donors and Cally & Juice. What’s been your favourite gig over the years and why?
If I’m honest I haven’t got a particular favourite, but it’s always a pleasure to DJ at DHF because the promoters Luca and Bubs are so down to earth it’s unbelievable and it’s very rare you find people like that. Sam Punk is a top lad as well, I had a good few drinks with him at Bionic.
Since you started your Nutty Trance label in December 2005 you’ve had over 40 releases. Was there a particular turning point that made you decide to start your own label?
Well I was doing a lot of stuff and sending it to places like Ministry of Sound and receiving no joy. I sent a hard house track to Nukleuz and Tidy when the hard house scene was still going in about 2004 and Dave Louca said, “It’s a nice track but not for us, if you made a hardcore version we’d possibly take it.” Lee Haslam from Tidy said, “Not a bad track, but too fast really. If you slowed it to around 145bpm we might look into it,” but I wasn’t particularly keen on changing stuff I’d produced so nothing came about.
I then thought, “Why not go into the business myself and put out the music I enjoyed?” I contacted some vinyl distributors and they were really interested in distributing the first two vinyl releases and from there the label has gone from strength to strength now, with two sub-labels under it as well, which have already hit number one several times on major stores, knocking Tiësto and Saifam Records off the top spots.
What have been the highlights for you in the last couple of years? And what goals do you have for the future?
The last few years have been amazing, with several Radio 1 plays, a set on Q-Dance Radio, DJing all over the UK, it’s just been absolutely unbelievable. My dream would definitely be to DJ at Qlimax or Black, those two events would suit my style down to the ground. Plus maybe a mix on Kutski’s show, I have a lot of respect for this guy so hopefully in the future, fingers crossed.
How did you first get into producing and what software and hardware do you like to use in the studio?
I used to use Roland MC303s in the studio. Basically now I just use software, a good soundcard, KRK Rokit 8 monitors, M-Audio Midi Keyboard, Quad Core PC and a hell of a lot of vsts, my main ones being Vstation, Pro53, Hydra, Korg Legacy, Z3ta, Albino, Magnus Choir and Nexus for pianos. People are often shocked when I say I just use VSTs now because I’ve had a few people say my leads sound like they are from the Virus TI.
‘Project Annexe (Advokate Anthem)’ has had some awesome reviews. What was the inspiration behind this track and how did you go about putting it together?
I was asked to do the Anthem by Steve and he wanted something dark for the theme and similar to the Qdance anthems. I got a script of what he wanted to have it say and asked me to work it in somewhere, but obviously for a track you can’t put in a full length script, so basically reworded it to fit and then got a pro voiceover and very good friend Brian Baumgartner in, who is superb at what he does. Then I went for a massive simple yet evil melody that would stick in your head and put effects on the vocal and put choirs in and screams plus big beats. When the tune was released it went down well everywhere —The Netherlands, Australia, UK, Germany, Denmark and it was played on Radio 1 twice, Qdance Radio and got five stars in Core Mag.
You’ve produced with some of the top hardstyle names in the industry, such as Blutonium Boy, DJ Neo, Fausto and Nick the Kid. Is there anyone else out there you’d like to collaborate with?
I would probably would have to say Southstylers, the talent they have is unreal. There is a few collborations I’m doing in the future which will be mind-blowing, so keep your eyes open.
As ‘the demon of hardstyle’, is there any hardstyle out there that’s too dark for even you? How would you define a good hardstyle track?
The more evil and sinister the better for me really. The track has got to have a nice drive. A perfect dark track for me is definitely Chris One — Scum, in my opinion the best track of 2009, if Theracords had not picked this one up I would have definately signed this myself, damn you Thera haha!
For those reading this who are new to hardstyle, who should we be listening to and going out to see at the moment? Who would you like to see break through in 2010?
Some of the guys at Theracords are really doing some good work. I respect Thera and the rest for actually doing something different with the label and the success the guys have had in a short space of time proves that it can be done.

You’re now a resident for DHF and playing at the next party at Hidden in May. How did you meet Luca and get involved in the party? And what treats do you have in store for your London fans in May?
Well I met Luca through Nick The Kid actually and I was offered to be one of the four headliners for the event. Me and Luca got talking and the friendship really took off. From there I met him a few more times at gigs I was doing around London, like the Octane launch event, which was good, and again at DHF’s birthday bash and we had a mint time, then he saw me at another gig and again we had a few beers and some laughs and he asked me to be the hardstyle resident for DHF and I was honoured to be asked. Treats I have in store — I’ve been working on some new material and will be playing some, banging out a mixture of dark hard trance and hardstyle.
What else do you have planned for the rest of 2010? And the rest of the decade?
Doing some collaborations, working on new material - I’m going to be producing a bit of trance/hard trance under my alias as well as doing some big hardstyle tunes, and DJing of course.
But I’d just like to say if it weren’t for the people that actually supported and bought the tunes and came to the gigs to watch me play, I wouldn’t be doing what I am now, so thanks to each and everyone that supports the labels and myself.
