DJ Mif takes Mutagen Records to Magnetix

As the psychedelic trance scene continues to permeate the far reaches of the globe, hyperactive DJ, producer and label manager Matt Kyriakedes aka DJ Mif slows down for a few minutes to tell us his story so far and what's been keeping him busy and his diary packed full of gigs...
You started your label, Mutagen Records, around a year ago, but had actually been making music for much longer than that. How did you first get into DJing?
I started mixing drum & bass 10 years ago when I was 16. I used to DJ d&b, breaks and hip hop. But actually my dad bought me decks when I was 13 and he gave me a Led Zeppelin and a Pink Floyd record and said: ‘Mix that!’ So I did and showed him six months later. Then he took the records off me as they were original pressings!
Basically all my mates were a hip hop crew and I started mixing tracks for them to rap over. They suggested I learn to DJ properly and I got infatuated. I got to 19 and hit breaks. I also used to rap with them and they said I had such a stage presence, I guess I always had a playfulness about me. But music has always been my passion. My mum remembers when I had two stereos in the front room and used to try and pause one to play the other!
So what kind of music do you like to play now?
I mix all types of psychedelic trance, from morning to the darker stuff. I still also DJ dubstep and reggae but obviously you’re not mixing in the same way.
That’s quite a jump from d&b to psy trance! How did that all come about?
I went to Uni and did a two year Arts Management course then switched to a two year music engineering course where I got into trip hop. I played a few gigs at Uni, cos at our Uni they made you perform. There would be constant argument between me and my teacher, as he said trance was more lucrative and I always argued and said no. I heard from him not so long ago and we had a good laugh, because out of the 19 or 20 in our course I’m the only one doing anything with music. Anyway, I got back from Uni and decided d&b wasn’t really my vibe, so got into dubstep, as it’s friendlier. Then I finally got into psy trance through going to a few parties with Sutekh and once I really got into it, working with Antiworld and going out and meeting so many people every weekend.
So Mutagen Records is predominantly psy trance then?
Yes, it’s covering all aspects of psy from prog to morning to twilight to night time.
And you’re producing tracks yourself?
Yes, using CuBase. I’ve been producing with Mark aka DJ Skam from Vision Records as Rodeo Clowning. Our signature track is ‘Daddy Computer’ and it’s coming out on first compilation, ‘Black Flares Blue Noise Vol. 1’. We’ve got 8 tracks but we’re only going to use four as first few were a bit ropey!
I’ve also got forthcoming tracks with Fabry (Metaphase) and have been offered remixes with Sinewave and E-Jekt, so will have fun rearranging their bass lines.
Why the name ‘DJ Mif’. Didn’t you start out as ‘Mythh’?
Yes, I was originally ‘Mythh’. Rinkadink came up to me at an Antiworld party at seOne and asked if I was called ‘Mythh’ or ‘Mif’. Then my brother nagged me for months and I finally gave up and became Mif. It’s actually got a South African translation. You know when you’ve been at the festival for a couple of days and you’re starting to feel a bit iffy… that’s Mif!
What are your main goals for the label and your music?
My main goal is to release all forms of quality psy trance and give it to the world. I want to play a few festies abroad, see other countries and adapt my style to theirs. I want to work with as many different artists of different styles of music as I properly can — I’d like to do lots of different things, like some trip hop.
Who have been your main influences over the years?
There’s way too many to list here! Cyprus Hill; Mad Lib and Stonethrow Records; Quazimoto, Mad Lib’s alter ego who sounds like a chipmunk; Skream; Digital Mysticz; Fear Factory metal; Billy Idol; Reggae — Bob Marley and Lee Scratch Marley and Slackers, one of the first ska reggae bands.
For prog I’d have to say Klopfgeister (‘Travel Diaries’, ‘Sun Flowered’); Ace Ventura; Liquid Soul; Sensifiel; Ritmo; Vibrasphere; and Saeg.
For full on: Flip Flop; Commercial Hippies; Headroom; Zen Mechanics, Burn In Noise; Whiplash; Rinkadink; Hyrodophonic; Regan; Eduardo; Shane Gobi; M-Theory; Journey; Digital Talk; Zionlinguist; E-Jekt; Sinewave; Sutekh; and The Wonky Badger.
Running your own label and playing at parties most weekends, you’re hearing the best of new music on a regular basis. Who has impressed you recently?
Dylan’s project, Connect the Dots; Organ Flow; Journey and M-Theory.
What have been the highlights of your time in the music scene so far?
Meetings lots of new people. DJing at some incredible parties. I’ve learnt loads — the whole experience itself has been quite awesome, indoors and outdoors. Setting up the label. Getting to work with some of my influences and helping shape their production. And helping people that I like!
What advice do you have for those reading this who’re just starting out?
It’s all about time. Learn to be patient.

You’ve just got back from playing Poland’s Common Festival then partying at the Glade. What’s your favourite piece of festival equipment?
The smoker’s Swiss army knife. It’s got the pokey and the bottle opener!
What do you have on the horizon for Mutagen Records?
Well the goal of the first CD was to release mainly British artists and people I liked. Then the second will be basically the people I’m playing today. I’ve got enough material signed for four EPs and four digital compilations.
What other projects do you have on the go right now?
I’ve recently started a live dubstep project with a mate: we’re going to make ambient psychedelic dubstep! Plus I’m doing a live act with Sinewave which we hope to launch later in the year.

What gigs and production do you have in the pipeline?
Well in terms of DJ Mif I have a few outdoor gigs after Magnetix, ChiChime on the 8th August and Sounds Of Sunrise on the 15th. A tour to South Africa also looks promising with a few dates to be confirmed and a further few dates still being decided, as well as a date for a South African label party in December.
We have a few label parties coming up in Denmark, Germany and few other European countries to promote the first compilation which has just came out, ‘Black Flares Blue Noise Vol. 1’ and also ‘Black Flares Blue Noise Vol. 2’, out soon, featuring Headroom, Commercial Hippies, Twenty vs. Swarup, Whiplash vs. Fromem Ory, Dejenga and more artists from the label. Two more compilations are also on their way and are being compiled as we speak, the third being compiled by co-manager Dillan M and I am working on the fourth compilation.
As for Dejenga (me and Sinewave), there’s the South African Tour with a few dates to be confirmed on that as well as a few more to be decided. We also have a few releases coming on the next three compilations on the label and we are working towards a digital EP and also a compilation, which will follow. Dejenga will be playing a DJ set of mainly our new tracks and some from the next 3 releases on Mutagen Records
You’re playing at Magnetix @ Club 414 this Friday, what can we expect to hear from you?
You can expect a mix of tunes from the forthcoming releases and some new awesome tunes I’ve sourced from Brazil, Chile, Mexico and the Mutagen records artists and artists to be.

With the exploits of our May event still fresh in the mind and with what looks set to be a fantastic summer ahead of us, we thought we’d waste no time in tell you all about our next party, the Magnetix Beach Party!
For this very special event we’re going to go all out to turn Club 414 into as much of a beach as possible to create that unique Magnetix vibe. With our second to none décor and up for it crowd we think this will be a night to remember, so much so that anyone wearing beachy attire will get £8 entry to the
club all night (no Speedos though please gents!)
Headling is Chris & Matt Kidd, two super hot DJ/Producer brothers from York who quite literally have the world at their feet. After tasting lots of early production success they have gone on to establish themselves as one of the UK’s fastest rising acts. Recently the pair have been signed to John Askews
“Discover” label which will further catapult their already impressive careers into the stratosphere. Seemingly ignored by London promoters for reasons unknown, we are very proud to be able to bring them down for their London debut!
DiabloTraxx Collective member Rob OTT is our next guest. Famed for their live PA’s which have taken them around the globe with Rob as their driving force, he has worked with just about everyone worth mentioning in the scene and commands respect wherever he goes, and with productions coming out of
his studio literally every week, we’re glad to have Rob show us what he is all about.
Taking our guest slot for some mouth-watering, feet stomping, twisted psychedelic craziness is Mif, the multi-talented DJ/producer and label manager of Mutagen Records. He’ll joining us fresh off the plane from Poland’s Common Festival, and having recently collaborated with some of the scene’s leading figures such as Sinewave and Sutekh, it’ll be clear why Mif is having no trouble establishing himself and his label on the international psy trance circuit.
Last but by no means least we have 2 of the finest talents to ever emerge from Wales in SHOCK:FORCE. Consisting of acclaimed producer Sully and DJ Matt Thomas, SHOCK:FORCE have taken the Hard Trance scene by storm in less than a year, with remixes of classics such as Jetlag and Expander taking their productions over the airwaves of Radio 1 as tracks signed to Dave Joy’s Joyride imprint, it’s fair to say that these two are making the right noises and moving in the right direction as we welcome them for only their second London set!
Of course no Magnetix would be the same without our fantastic residents Phil Lankester AKA Libra 9, Dean Zone, Andy Forse, Timmy Whiz, Kevster, Lorenzo "Tequila" Barrero and Barry Harding!
As per usual we’ll have 50 copies of the latest Magnetix Promo CD, with Vol. 7 this time being mixed by our very own Dean Zone.
