Hypnoise set to mesmerise London: debut appearance at World Lounge Project

Jaime and Juan are a young Spanish duo who are currently making waves across the European psychedelic scene. Better known as Hypnoise, their sound spans the spectrum of daytime and morning full-on psy trance, and their cutting edge production style has marked them out as ‘ones to watch’ from the new generation of up and coming artists.
With great things on the horizon, and a spectacular London debut ahead of them, I caught up with them before their appearance at World Lounge Project on Saturday 29 September at Markfield Arts Centre.
Your profile has emerged onto the UK scene fairly recently, can you tell us about your background in music, and how did you find your way into psychedelic trance culture?
Both of us came from an electronic music background since the mid-90s when techno, house and other genres strongly arrived to Spain. We started to play with vinyl and mixing just for fun, til one day in 1999 we went to our first psychedelic festival in Morocco for New Years Eve, where our taste of music changed completely forever!
You have a record label, Maharetta Records: what is the label doing at the moment and what is your vision for the future?
The idea of the label was cooking in our minds for the last two years, as we saw many friends with a lot of talent without any opportunity abroad. So finally in mid-2012 we decided to take a step forward and start the label.
We gathered the best Spanish artists in our style and a couple of international friends and started releasing some stuff. We released a couple of EPs from Ying Yang Monks and Yar Zaa, and compiled the first compilation, Harmonic Spectrum with a lot of friends involved.
Right after these releases the family started to grow, and we recruited to our roster a few more DJs and live acts from all around like Contineum (UK) and DJ Raoul (Germany).
More releases are coming in the near future, including a few EPs from Contineum, Multiman, and us (Hypnoise), and a couple more compilations.
We understand how the music business is nowadays in terms of selling music, so we are not working on the label just to sell records. We just want to release good music from friends to promote us all, and have the opportunity to play around. We also intend to organise some Maharetta events in collaboration with other promoters.
What inspires you to make music?
We get inspiration from everything. Nature, animals, music of all genres, movies; everything around can be an inspiration sometimes.
In creative work you never know when a great idea will come so it is best to be prepared all the time and enjoy all moments.
As a duo how do you cooperate together in the studio? Do you patiently share thoughts, specialise in different things, or grapple for ideas?
Well it’s difficult nowadays because when we started we used to live in the same house, and today we are living in different cities. For us of course it is better to be both in the studio discussing ideas together, when one of us is working the other is freed up to let his creativity flow.
Now collaborating over the internet the only problem is that we take a lot more time to finish some of our tracks... Anyway we are managing the situation quite well and have no problem meeting our deadlines!
To answer your question more precisely, we both work on everything of every track; from sampling to writing to arranging, there’s no particular order or specialisation for either of us.
Please tell us about the most exciting or interesting gig you’ve played recently? What was special about it?
There were a couple of killer ones last summer, but if we have to choose one it would be Freqs of Nature. The vibe there was amazing, and for a first edition their work was superb: the festival totally looks like it’s got 10 years of experience behind it. There were lots of performers, stalls, expositions, workshops, and of course two main floors – one forest and one psychedelic – with amazing decor and soundsystems and a chill out too. This was one of the best psychedelic festivals for me in the last years, there was only psychedelic music and nothing else, and that’s what we like!!!
What are the best and worst things about your artist’s lifestyle?
Jaime: Well sometimes it is difficult to manage my ‘normal’ work with gigging and making music, it feels like I need days with 35 hours! But I hope sometime in the future to quit my ‘normal’ job and dedicate myself completely to music. That’s the worst. Everything else is amazing.
Juan: For me it is kind of easier, I have no day job so I can spend all my time doing music and managing the label. I live in the countryside, away from the city, so here it’s quieter and cheaper and I am able to manage just doing music. So I think there is no bad side to it for me, I love to work in what I love.
What are you listening to when you are chilling out at home?
From Queen to Bob Marley passing through Aphex Twin to Metallica and Pink Floyd... so there’s a lot of diversity...
You are shipwrecked on a desert island and are only able to rescue one instrument, VST or hardware synth. It could be anything, what would it be?
Can I choose my laptop?? Hehehe.. if not I would take the Dynaudio monitors and will ask Jaime to take the Rme…
Who are your current favourite artists, psychedelic or otherwise?
Let’s just talk about the psychedelic ones, cause the others would be a long list. Our favourite since they (he nowadays) started is Sonic Species. Also Ital, Tristan, Laughing Buddha, Avalon, Spectra Sonics, Spirit Architech, Dickster, Burn in Noise, First Stone, Yar Zaa... I think this would also be a long list hehehe, so let’s leave it like this...
If you could throw a party anywhere in the world, where would you do it?
In some lost tropical island with a pre-party on the flight!!
What do you think, makes psytrance ‘psychedelic’?
Well not all the psy trance is psychedelic. I think the one that makes you travel within you to outer spaces is the psychedelic one... you just have to close your eyes, listen and enjoy the ride!
You are making your UK debut together on the 29th September at World Lounge Project: Tribal Uprising. What makes your live set stand out, and what can people expect from you on the night?
We have been working hard on our sound to get it fatter, groovy and more psychedelic.
We love the UK’s psy trance, we’ve got a lot of influences from it, but there’s still a difference between us, so our performance will fit perfectly with the theme of the party with our Spanish touch on it. Hope you all enjoy!!!

World Lounge Project is a rare event that showcases the trends of the world’s underground music scenes. This year’s event combines 2 rooms: psychedelic trance, and a mixture of live bands, dub, breaks and electronica.
Headlining is Gaudi, stopping off on a world tour of 4 continents to exhibit a prototype instrument called the Alphasphere. Gaudi is a prolific artist with 11 artist albums to his name whose sound crosses over reggae, dub and chillout.
Topping the bill for the psytrance room are Spanish duo Hypnoise. Making their debut in the UK, the pair are the founders of Maherrata Records, their style is particularly influenced by the UK full-on sound.
The visual production of the party brings together an excessive selection of the most creative talent available. Décor crews from the legendary Manchester psytrance party Illuminaughty. Global Village, whose trail of international festivals has popularised many of the concepts they purvey and InOrbit, whose set designs have become the centrepiece several high profile London events and have even been featured on the gadget show!
The lighting show will be provided by the pioneers of their field: ExtraDiMensional Technologies. Developing and manufacturing their own unique Hexmod LED technology, they have trailblaized their way across Europe’s most highly regarded events, designing lighting rigs and shows for Boom Festival, Ozora, Acidmonkey and Glade
