I've always tended to write a reasonably job-specific cover letter each time I applied for anything, directing the reader toward relevant skills or experience on my cv. It can be a bit of a hassle doing one every time but I think it's worth it. From the other side, if I've ever received an application with what's obviously a boilerplate cover then in the bin it goes. Take the safe option and go with Kerb's.

yeah, if it is an advertised job then I'll make specific points, however if it is just being sent to companies that have said they welcome CVs without a specific job posted then that's where my problem lay. the Kerb approach should bag them for me i reckon.

You not looking for any shop front staff?

According to physics, nothing ever quite touches. When you lay your hand on something, there is a microscopic amount of space between the atoms of your hand and whatever you're touching... so no, officer, technically I'm not jacking off right now

tbh, each letter should be created around the job. You can do the bare bones and then edit for specific roles. Basically a summation of CV but then why you would be the person for that job.

Keep it brief, we live in a world of 140 character attention span. First line and last line are most memorable. Humour good, but back it with "I own this".

"Do you believe in the devil? You know, a supreme evil being dedicated to the temptation, corruption, and destruction of man?"
"I'm not sure that man needs the help." (Calvin & Hobbes)
