Banco de Gaia

» Apollo

Reviewed by Pete M / Submitted 18-07-17 12:16

Label: Disco Gecko Recordings
Format: CD
Genre: Ambient / Electronica

As we now work backwards in the Banco de Gaia realm, we now focus on 2013's Apollo. Before this album, Banco had released Big Men Cry, The Magical Sound Of Banco de Gaia and Farewell Ferengistan. On Apollo, we see a worldly, ambient, sound, mixed with the odd dancefloor stomper. Plus a remix album as well.

Apollo starts with a wonderful 3-minute track called Lamentations, which features the vocals of Zhenia Mahdi Nau. After that, the album works its way into Wimble Toot, which is a rather nice reggae-influenced number. Its single was remixed by Eat Static, whose remix appears on the remix album but more on that in another review.

Elsewhere on the album, Banco shifts through the gears and offers a touch more ambient and dance-laden grooves with "Eternal Sunshine", "Apollon" and the wonderful "For Such A Time", which utilises a rock-driven beat in its climax.

In all, Apollo represents an artist who is vastly experienced at creating unique landscapes with his music and finding new ways of using samples and real instruments. It isn't a synthetic dance record but an organic one. Everything is on the table and that makes for a very interesting record. Buy it.
