Exploring the extra-terrestrial waves in the super sonic mind of Mindwave!

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 12-11-18 10:57

Mindwave aka Anton Maiko has been making psychedelic trance music for over a decade now and it’s fair to say, in this time he has elevated himself to the upper echelons of the Psychedelic Trance scene. Despite being around for this long, his deep enchanting hypnotic sound remains fresh, unique and innovational. We decided an interview with Anton was well overdue - seeing that he’s just about to unleash his 6th artist album to the masses! ‘Children of Space’ is released on Iono Music on November 26th, 2018! Read on to find out more…

You’re from Nazareth Illit in Israel. What was it like growing up here. What was your first experience with music?

It's a nice small city in the north part of Israel. Great air, green trees everywhere and that’s it ha ha! It’s quite a boring city, but nice, especially when you come back from a tour as it’s so calm.. My first experience with music was when I was just a kid. At the age of 4 or 5, I already was watching MTV and jumping around the house listening to the current tunes. Later on, I discovered trance music through my big brother, who was bringing tapes and vinyls back home. I was hypnotised by this music.

Who were your early influences?

I was influenced by a lot of electronic music artists; in trance the ones that really influenced me were Cosma, Astral Projection, Human Blue, and MFG.

When did you start wanting to make music for yourself and how did this come about?

At about the age of thirteen I got my first computer and it was then I discovered I could make music with it using software that was available at that time. Programs like Impulse, Tracker etc.

You’ve been making music for over ten years now. How do you feel you have changed as an artist and what in you has remained the same?

I think I learn something new every day, in every production. We’re always learning. Over the years my greater experience has enabled me to make my sound and production better and better. This has come about by keeping my kind of signature sound in every track I do and I feel this is important.

Your 6th artist album ‘Children of Space’ will be released on Iono Music on the 26th November 2018. Talk us through the album. Was there a concept behind it?

The concept of the album is something that I have believed in for many many years and am always researching about it. I think humans are connected somehow to space; to other intelligent life out there. There are billions and gazillions of stars out there and for sure; I feel we are not alone. I'm a big fan of the Ancient Aliens series ha ha...The album has a real spacey atmosphere, you can feel the journey from track to track, closer and closer to the star we call home. which is the name of the last track :-)

What for you are the stand out, special tracks on the album?

I think they would be ‘Astral Sequence’, ‘Neuro Lullaby’ and ‘Soyuz’. ‘Astral Sequence’ is the opening track of the album, and it’s based on a melodic pattern that goes throughout the track but with different powerful velocities. ‘Neuro Lullaby’ is a track which is very close to my heart; because it’s influenced by my child and my wife, when she sings him a lullaby as he drifts off to sleep. It was so soothing, so I decided to make my own lullaby ha ha. ‘Soyuz’ is a very unique track I think, and one of the best tracks I have made I feel.

The album cover artwork is divine. Tell us about this…

The first thing you see is two children going into a field, towards a big star! And on the other side, if you look really carefully, you’ll see there are another two figures on the other side. I will let you figure out who it might be ;-)

When playing out, what kit and software do you use?

I use an Apple Macbook Pro, with Ableton and a small Akai controller.

What skills and attributes do you feel you need to be a successful artist?

First of all, I think you need to be humble, friendly, and not with your nose up your a**e. Notwithstanding your success, you should always be kind, and without a ‘super star’ attitude. Most off all I feel you should be tolerant. Also, be original, be creative and don’t just follow current trends and fashion. Make your own sound, your special touch, that everyone will recognise.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I hope to keep making more music and to visit new places and meet new people and just absorb as many different and new cultures as I can.

Now for some quick fire questions!

What’s your favourite country to visit?

There are so many but I guess I’d say South Africa.

What’s your favourite party to play?

For sure OZORA and also Boom Festivals.

What’s your favourite food and drink?

Shawarma, with a good beer or Coke Zero.

What do you like doing when you’re not playing out or making music? What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any other hobbies?

I like to watch movies and also tv series; mostly Sci Fi and Comedies. I also like a good documentary film about aliens ha ha!

Anton - thanks for taking the time for this interview. Good luck with the album release and all your future endeavours :-) X

Thank you very much for having me! Smile
