What Makes Shinouda Say Wow!

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 01-08-18 16:39

Carmen Duquenoy aka Shinouda (Djane Caemix) is a psychedelic trance artist from Switzerland. Releasing her stunning tracks over the years, Shinouda is currently signed to the epic Savva Records. With a plethora of fresh tracks ready to unleash, and a single out soon on Reincarnations Recordings called ‘I Say Wow’, we caught up with Carmen to find out what does make her Say Wow!!

You were born into a musical family. Tell us about your upbringing and the music you grew up with?

As a child I loved music and sang everywhere. I can still remember how I used to sit in front of the radio with headphones on at night to make tape recordings of my favourite songs. At that time my grandfather was a well-known trumpet player in the Tonhallen Orchestra in Zurich and my father had a big influence for me as a banjo player. In the 80s/90s, my heroes included Queen, Bon Jovi, 4 Non Blondes, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix.

At what age did you decide you wanted to make music a career?

I was about 7 years old when I attended music school to take piano lessons and also in the Girl Guides. I used to grab the guitars here and there from my guides and practice well-known riffs and melodies. I never had the idea of ever being on stage though. This happened in the later years when I started to play DJ sets.

Were your family and friends supportive of this decision?

Yes sure. I always told them about my bookings. But I think they found it hard to imagine what these parties were like; until my mother and sister came to visit me at a day party during the street parade. They were amazed that over 1000 people were dancing to my music.

Which artists inspire you? What other genres of music do you enjoy?

Oh there are so many. In the progressive area, there are artists such as Liquid Soul, Zyce, Avalon, Symbolic, Ritmo, Astrix, Vertex, Sonic Entity, Multiphase, Audiotec, Ticon, Phaxe, Metronomes. But also artists like Merkaba, Tetrameth, Be Swensden, Hraach, Amentia, Sahalé, Bedouin inspire me a lot. I also listen to a lot of different styles of music from Blues, Rock, Reggae, Metal etc.

You started going to Goa Trance events many years ago when it all kicked off! What was it you loved so much about this scene that got you ‘hooked’?

It all started when a friend gave me a CD of Infected Mushroom - ‘Classical Mushroom’. The psychedelic sounds and the driving beats inspired me and made my legs dance. Then my colleague took me to a Goa party in the mountains - the good mood within the psy family, simply dancing and celebrating in nature, gave me a very good feeling and I couldn’t imagine not attending such events any more.

You’re a highly skilled and committed DJ. What do you think it takes to be a good DJ, and what goes through your mind when playing a set?

I think it's important to stay true to your style, not to just play the Beatport charts up and down. To be daring, and to play some tracks by unknown artists as well. And of course you have to have the focus on the audience to be able to respond to them, dance and, above all, have fun yourself, to share the music and the pleasure with the crowd.

You’re also a very acclaimed producer, making stunning tracks - beautiful trancers! Talk us through your process of producing a track, right from the inspiration to the writing to the mixing.

There are many producers who go to the studio with a plan to produce a new track. For me, it's more like I just let it happen. After an emotional appearance and a great audience, new ideas for new tracks emerge, giving motivation and inspiration. And then the creativity flows fast until I have the great basis of a track.

Do you feel being a female artist differs from being a male artist in the psy-trance scene? If so; how?

Hmm.. This is a difficult question. I think that the energy of a female artist affects the listener differently. I have had people from the audience tell me after my sets that they could hear and feel it was a woman playing.

What advice would you have for budding new artists out there?

Find your own style and do not try to copy other artists, and most of all - have fun with the music. Do it for the music and the love and don’t just do it to become famous.

How do you think your friends would describe you?

I guess I'm perceived as humorous, kind, communicative and helpful. Mostly I am happy and always smiling.

If you had to write a book about the story of your life, what title would you give it and why?

Music is my first love and it will be my last.

What’s been your happiest memory so far in your career?

There are so many… Recently I was allowed to play in Sweden at the Forest Star Festival. It was a beautiful festival with so many positive and beautiful people who gave me so much good energy and love. Also - the One Love Festival in Switzerland, where I really had tears in my eyes during my performance. And the Solstice Festival in Amsterdam some years ago, when the DJ after me did not arrive and I was able to play a total of 5 hours for a wonderful and grateful audience. Also a very special moment for me was when I could visit my idol Phaxe in his studio.

You’re upcoming single ‘I Say Wow’ is out soon on Reincarnations Recordings. Tell us about the track?

This track was created after the Boom Festival 2016. The saying "I SAY WOW" was said by an insider in our camp and somehow it travelled through the whole of the festival. Back in the studio, I wrote down everything, all my emotions and positive memories of the boom festival. Yes. And from that came the track "I say Wow".

What makes you ‘say wow’?

Nice encounters with positive people, a good meal, good conversation, impressive nature… unique moments.

What are you most excited about in the future?

Sharing my music with many people, making them dance and making them happy!

Shinouda - thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us Smile Good luck with the release Smile xx
