Friend Of Kristian, Star Of Turnmills – A Pick Me Up Is Just The Thing For Matt Loraine

Twelve years ago, when his Dad passed a demo tape to a Sunday sessions promoter down South, a then young and very keen bedroom DJ had no idea that within a decade he would be playing psy trance alongside the stars of Antiworld to three thousand people at London’s illustrious Coronet venue. You see for Matt Loraine, it’s been as much a spiritual journey as it has been an educational one, from humble beginnings in Southsea playing the infamous Steamin boat parties and appearing on the line-up of many a Hard Dance gathering be it small or large along the Coast; right up to the thunderous applause from a packed room at Turnmills, psy trance is well and truly in his blood and will be for quite some time.
His ‘Pick Me Up’ CD collection, initially started as a memoir for the people attending his first boat party, has now become a bit of phenomenon with a waiting list for each new edition and with Matt frantically recording new mixes to be distributed for free, this highlights just one small indication of the level of commitment to which Matt dedicates to his scene. Citing DJ Kristian, Astrix and many other international legends as his influences and now a regular on Ministry Of Sound’s Euphoria radio show hosted by Adam White, we sat down with Matt Loraine to talk about his work, his career and the ever growing party brand – Psy-Co.
Matt Loraine! How goes it?
I’m very well, thank you.
How are things with Psy-Co and what are we to expect from this weekend's event and indeed future Psy-Co's to come?
Psy-Co is going very well. We have built a solid reputation as one of the UK’s best psy trance parties! This Saturday we have Dejavoo playing live for us and we can’t wait! Dejavoo are one of the best live acts I’ve heard on the scene at the moment! Psy-Co is all about bringing like minded people together for the love of the music and to party and have a great time; and we’ll be hosting some top parties supported by some of the best acts in the World and the cream of local South Coast talent.
It's been on quite the journey hasn't it?
Yes it has, it’s been amazing, I’m living my dream and it’s involved a lot of hard work and dedication but DJing has always been my passion. It all started 12 years ago when three months after buying my decks my father, Andy gave my demo mix to ‘Sunday Sessions’ and they gave me a booking; I then went on to win the Portsmouth hard house comp and then to the final of the Midlands Mixing Competition where my good friend, Tony Heron won and went on to be one of the best hard dance DJ’s around! Then over the space of eight years I was rocking the South Coast hard dance parties and getting to play with some real UK legends.
Tell us about your recent rise to fame via Turnmills main room?
Well that started when Trevor (Matt’s partner in Psy-Co and originator of the Psy-Co brand), invited me to play a psychedelic trance set on one of the infamous ‘Steamin’ boat parties. It was a great night; a lot of people had never heard of psy trance and so I played a lot of Astrix tunes to get them in the mood and they all loved it! After that party we invited Antiworld’s DJ Kristian to come and play for us at Psy-Co and since then, it’s taken off big time – for our first Psy-Co we booked Astrix and had a 20k Funktion one sound system, projections, you can imagine it - the atmosphere was amazing! Astrix and Kristian both loved it and always want to come back to play for us. From there I played at ‘Chichimes 7th Birthday’ and we took a whole coach up, amazing night. From the Knowwhere main stage at Heaven and then to play for Antiworld was just simply my dream come true and then furthermore to play main stage at the Coronet and to play to a sell out crowd at Turnmills, I will never forget – especially as it’s closing soon.
How would you best describe your journey from the smaller Portsmouth parties to the daunting stages of the Nova Festival in Belgium and indeed, how you got there?
It’s been a long and a fun journey and I’ve had the best times of my life DJing at wicked parties in that time.
What's it like working with the psy trance giants, because you have recently been frequenting with some seriously influential people within that scene haven't you?
Its cool, everyone I work with is down to Earth and genuine- that’s how it should be, it’s like a family.
Who of the psy trance giants are your heroes and why?
There’s too many to mention!
Psy trance is a scene which is still fairly underground, do you think with the likes of John '00' Fleming releasing Psy Trance Euphoria on Ministry Of Sound's label will now bring it into a more commercial forum?
Why not!
Are you as an avid supporter happier for it to become more commercial through such exposures or would you prefer it to stay very much underground?
Depends on what you mean by commercial, as in Radio 1? Don’t know - a lot of people are taking notice of psy and it’s translating itself well into many events right across the party scene which is cool.
Over all other genres, what is it that has made you so passionate about psy trance?
The music is cutting edge, the production and the effort that go into psy trance will blow you away if you’ve not got into it before - I know everyone has their own individual taste and I respect everyone’s separate musical tastes but when I found psy or ‘new age trance’ as it’s also known, it blew me away! It made me feel like I was going out to my first party again, some amazing vibes! Psy trance is massive with festivals all over the world, for example in Brazil they have parties for 60, 000 people and in Israel they play psy trance on National Radio everyday. It’’s like “eh?” - wicked.
Now, tell us about your CD promo series Pick Me Up, we understand it's something that only really started as a demo mix and has now turned into a bit of a collector's item?
Yes, after taking a break from the hard dance scene, I started collecting psy trance and my good friend Jim from (South Coast ‘rave supplies’ outlet) Hedonics was a massive help and pointed me in the right direction in order to collect (in my opinion) the best music that’s being made from around the world at the moment! For our first ‘Steamin’ boat party, I made my Pick Me Up CD and gave my promo away to all the people that came. I wanted them to remember the night, I’ve always wanted to give my mixes to the people that love the music and that’s how Pick Me Up started and that’s what it’s always been about.
Pick Me Up 2 was my best ever CD, I’ve probably given out a 1000 copies and it got played on Adam White’s Ministry Radio show, Euphoria. Pick Me Up 3, was broadcast on Ministry just over three weeks ago too and I’ll be giving away 200 copies exclusively at the next Psy-Co.
Your up and coming years in your home town in Portsmouth meant that you are used to playing smaller capacity gigs, but you've been playing some packed houses of late haven't you? What's the biggest crowd you've had to entertain to date and how nerve racking was it for you?
When I first started DJing, we organized a beach party on Hayling Island and thought maybe only a hundred or so people would turn up; in fact there were over a thousand people and it was amazing! At the Coronet I played to 3000 people , er - Turnmills 1500 and I’m due to play at Brixton Academy to 4500 people, but no matter the numbers, I always get a buzz and enjoy when DJing at wicked parties.
A 'what if' question for you now, what with the release of John '00's Psy Trance Euphoria tell us, if you were to record such an album with one other DJ and were responsible for Disc 1, who would you have join you to record your Disc 2 and why?
I’d ask DJ Kristian. He is a fantastic bloke and his dedication to the scene is amazing; his mixes music and live act – Dejavoo are cutting edge quality.
Tell us about your forthcoming gigs, who you're with and which you are most looking forward to and why?
We have the Psy-Co party this Saturday at South Parade Pier in Portsmouth, then the massive Antiworld at Brixton Academy, London; Tribal Medicine at Ocean Rooms in Brighton then Judgmental back in Portsmouth, Club Filth in Mallorca, Antiworld Ibiza, the Life Festival in Ireland, Antiworld 08 08 08, Waveform Festival UK and plenty more Ministry Radio.
So many wicked parties coming up, I’m looking forward to playing them all!

Antiworld Heroes Dejavoo Headline The South Coast’s Biggest Psy-Trance Event With Ministry Radio Star Matt Loraine!
On Saturday 1st March 2008, Psy-Co (The Psychedelic Co-Operative) return to their spiritual gathering home of one of Portsmouth’s oldest landmark venues, South Parade Pier. Promising an ‘evening of full fat psychedelic dance’, this time around Psy-Co welcome very special live guests, Antiworld headliners Dejavoo (aka DJ Kristian & Kalimamboh) and Psy-Co resident, promoter and star of Ministry Of Sound radio, Matt Loraine. The event will also include appearences from Psy-Co resident Ryan Bushell, Technosis regular Jimmy Neutron and a set from newcomer Laurence Cuckoo.
The headlining live act, Dejavoo is a well sharpened combination of two outstanding Psy-Trance artists, Francesco aka DJ Kalimamboh (and also known as Plastic Vibe) and Kristian (Transient Records A&R, recording artist and Antiworld resident). Having performed their unique fusion of uplifting yet driving Psy-Trance beats all over the globe including Denmark, Germany, Brazil and Ireland inclusive of a massive slot supporting the almighty Infected Mushroom at Brixton Academy which was met with excellent support by the ever expanding Psy-Trance community across the UK and beyond. Their first release on Alchemy back in May 2006 was received with great acclaim through it’s initial appearance on the Elsewhere compilation, with further praise coming in thick and fast from the likes of Trance hero Christopher Lawrence for tracks such as Screaming People, which featured prominently on Tsuyoshi Matsuri’s compilation Rhythm not forgetting of course releases on Transient, Quest 4 Goa, Point Zero and Alchemy Records.
Psy-Co resident, co-promoter and South Coast star Matt Lorraine will be the second headliner and has recently had the fine opportunity of playing alongside some of the biggest names within the international scene at Antiworld’s massive We Love Astrix 001 event at reverred London venue Turnmills. Matt is looking forward to playing once again in his home town after a steady flow of gigs rubbing shoulders with Psy-Trance giants including EVP, Dejavoo and Digit Cult. Matt has also performed at the Nova Festival in Belgium, had regular mixes on Ministry of Sound’s Euphoria radio show and stars on the line-up at massive Anti-World events on a regular basis. His mix series, the exclusive ‘Pick Me Up’ collection is now it in it’s third volume after the second receiving applause from widespread audiences.
Rounding off the line-up nicely are Psy-Co regular Ryan Bushell, Psy-Trance crowd controller Jimmy Neutron and introuducing a first time fiasco for up and comer Laurence Cuckoo, celebrating his first session gracing the Psy-Co CDJ’s.
