John '00' Fleming unfolds at Peach

Reported by mostwantedkat / Submitted 11-07-07 21:52

When you’ve been DJing for over two decades, you’re in a position more than most to look back over the state of your chosen scene and, as Lloyd Grossman so delightfully put it, deliberate, cogitate and digest. Such an individual is John ‘00’ Fleming, or J00F as he’s known to hundreds of thousands around the world. One of the biggest names in international dance music and a legend in his own right, J00F has been forging his distinctive sound for 20 years. When his style changed from hard house to trance, he may have had his critics but he stuck with it and has since gone on to even greater glory.

His latest album, ‘Unfold’, is a stunning double CD mix, rapturously received by just about everyone and summing up his dedication to and love of psy trance. Taking tracks by some of the hottest acts out there, including Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Wizzy Noise, Pete Gawtry, Alex Morph and John himself, he blends, concocts, fuses and creates two phenomenal mixes that are both sublime and scintillating. Technically superb, musically beautiful, ‘Unfold’ wraps itself around the listener from the very beginning and takes them to a world of beautiful music. At times dark, techy and driving, at others ethereal and floating, and in the very best parts, both, this is an album that perfectly brings together the sounds of two of the most exciting genres out there at the moment.

On Friday 27th July, J00F returns to the main stage at London’s Heaven to headline the infamous Peach party. Backed up by Bobina and Thomas Bronzwaer, this promises to be a showcase of what’s happening on the international scene outside of the UK. Which, in J00F’s opinion, puts ours to shame...

Tell us what you’ve been up to lately…

I seem to be living on aircraft as late, then being tired when I get home! But in between flights I’m working hard in the studio and many projects.

Your latest album ‘Unfold’ is out now on Fektive. How’s it been received by your fans?

There’s been an amazing reaction from everyone. Like all my albums I try and make them a timeless mix and not head for the obvious tracks so that the album won’t tire. Again people seem to like my way of thinking.

How long does it take you to put together an album? Is there a lot of mastering involved or do you prefer to just get into the mix and leave it as a raw product?

I like to get stuck into the raw mix! I’ve been DJing for 20 years so have no problems whatsoever with programming and mixing. The only frustrating thing can be waiting to get tracks cleared so I can use them in the mix.

What do you think of all these albums that are currently on the market mixed by a sound engineer instead of an actual DJ?

I understand some can’t find enough time to mix these comps, also some labels want to cram as many tracks as possible onto one CD, so this makes it impossible to do one long mix. In that case it’s easier to get an engineer to edit the tracks down to size and glue them together, as there’s no time for mixing! But for me I like the full-length tracks and use less of them so you get the full feel and power of the mix.

How did you go about picking the tracks on there?

That’s the easy part, simply use the ones that get the best reaction on the dancefloor!!

Will we be seeing an artist album from you very soon? If so, will you be collaborating with anyone in particular? Who would be your perfect person to go into the studio with at the moment and why?

I’m already collaborating with my favourite artists: Wizzy Noise and The Digital Blonde. I’m currently working on my artist album as we speak and there will be collabs with the aforementioned. I work alone in the studio so this album has been taking quite a while to put together due to my lack of time in the studio due to my hectic touring schedule. I aim to have it ready by the end of the year.

You play all over the world, particularly in South America where the scene seems to be absolutely massive. How different is it playing in other countries compared to the UK?

We can’t hide the fact that the UK is currently having a lull in the clubbing. The club scene has gone very commercial and music is not a priority when people go out… more like a fashion show! Places like Brazil they simply go out for the music and that brings an amazing atmosphere of open minded clubbers. They want to experience new music throughout the night. Go back a few years and that’s what the UK used to be like… what went wrong?

Do you think the UK scene gets how big the international trance and psy trance scene is?

Nope… and they never have done! It’s only recently that the media have picked up on the psy trance scene and made the public aware of it. In fact the psy scene has been alive, well and healthy for the past decade.

You’re playing Peach at Heaven on Friday 27th July. Is this the first time you’ve had the pleasure of playing at either Peach or Heaven? Are you looking forward to it?

Yes I’ve played both many times. I used to be resident at Heaven on Friday nights at a night run by my old label React. I had some amazing memories there. Peach has also given me many a good night, so the combo of both is really exciting for me.

What can we expect from your set?

Everyone who knows me will expect my different take on trance music. Heaven is probably one of the few clubs in the UK that I can get away with expressing myself musically, so expect lots of new exciting trance music with that added Fleming dust!

Russian sensation Bobina is playing his first ever UK set at Peach. What was your very first set like?

I met Bobina not so long ago when I was in Moscow, so really looking forward to seeing him play here in the UK. My first set wasn’t really memorable because it was so long ago! Back then the emphasis wasn’t so much on the mixing, but slamming the tracks together, and that’s what I did!!

You started DJing at the tender age of 15. Do you ever get bored or are you constantly trying out new toys that come along?

When I get new tracks, I still get just as excited about wanting to play then in front of a crowd as I did 20 years ago. It’s amazing that I still get that exact feeling today. I think when that feeling goes, then I know it’s time to hang up the head phones.

What was your first reaction to the revolutionary Pioneer CDJs when they came out?

I though… it’s about bloody time! I was one of the first DJs to embrace CD way back in 1995, so it made no difference to me because I was a fan of CDs. I only kept playing the odd vinyl because it was the public that didn’t take a DJ seriously unless he would play vinyl.

Where do you see the future of dance music going? Who are your tips for the top?

Dance music will always be here to stay. In the UK we tend to go through phases, as I mentioned before we’re going through a lull. I hope the scene will come back in the UK, because we have always been at the forefront of music and culture.

Unfortunately we can’t say that today! Gone are our underground clubs leading the way with new music and DJs. At the moment we are way behind and other countries put us to shame. Bring back the British dance culture, I’m a proud Brit and want our scene back again… I’m fed up with all this commercialism.

More: After an absolutely smash return to Heaven last month, London’s most iconic night returns on Friday July 27th with the full intention of repeating its success all over again.

Peach, one of the biggest legends in recent clubbing history, exploded back onto the scene in May. The faithful and those newly acquainted have been far from disappointed with the list of DJs paraded in front of them for their dance floor pleasure.

So far this year we’ve seen Mark Norman, Aly & Fila, Tillman Urhmacher, John O’ Callaghan, Abel Ramos and Darren Pearce grace the decks alongside the man himself, Graham Gold. For July, they’ve upped the ante even further with a world-class line-up that should have the Peachy Ravers beside themselves.

Needing absolutely no introduction whatsoever (unless you’ve had your head under a stone for the past two decades) is one of the undisputed kings of global trance. John ‘00’ Fleming draws crowds of thousands whether he’s playing in South America, North America, Asia or in Europe. He flies in for this exclusive UK gig with some of the most deliciously twisted psy-trance and tech-trance music money can buy.

Joining him on the main stage is Thomas Bronzwaer. A favourite of Paul Van Dyk, Armin, Eddie Halliwell and Sander Van Doorn to mention but a few, his latest track Constellation has been causing tidal waves throughout the trance community and there are hundreds, if not thousands of UK fans who will be begging for the chance to see this hot to trot new generation producer in all his glory.

Making his much-anticipated UK debut this month is Bobina. The hottest export from Russia since chilli-flavoured vodka, he’s another one who’s been picked up by all the major names. With his trademark ‘Lazy World’ sound he’s definitely a man to catch on the way up, and what better place to catch him than Heaven’s legendary main room?

In the House Arena, Luke Brancaccio of Brancaccio & Aisher fame (who can forget the manic rush for Lovely Day?) lines up against fellow heavyweight Darren Pearce for what will surely be one of those occasions when it ‘goes off’. Rico & Tomo from Hey Gorgeous join in to prove they’re more than just a pair of pretty faces.

Finally, the room where you’re lucky if you can make it inside – the Peach Classics Room. Since the night restarted, it’s been packed from start to finish with tunes that take you back in time and hundreds of smiling faces with their hands on the air. If you were there when it all began or you simply want to know where your dance floor came from, this is without a doubt the one for you.

In Brazil maybe in the outdoor raves, people are more likely to go for the music, but on clubs (apart from Lov.e, D-Edge and few others), people are more concerned about seeing-and-be-seeing. The music is def on second plan. Clubs like Pacha in Sao Paulo, just help to increase the dumbness on the dancefloors. The prices of drinks and entrance are far too expensive for the people who really like the music. Anyways, the Brazilian scene is growing everyday, but very few people go out just for the music.

As far as I know in the London scene. Most of clubbers are into electronic music and know their DJs.
