Presenting DJ Mara LeFay and her new techno brand - Pantheon!

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 18-04-18 21:05

Romanian born / London based techno DJ Mara LeFay found music an inspiration in the Berlin warehouse scene, and soon began a career in music, with a love for the grandeur of the warehouse, superclub, festival and forest party scene. Mara plays a variety of techno, tech house and electronica; on both CD and vinyl. Mara has also recently launched a new techno events brand called Pantheon Music. With upcoming events already secured at Electric Brixton, London on the 8th June 2018 and also a techno take-over at the massive awesome Boomtown Festival on the 12th August 2018, we decided it was time to find out more about this rising star!

Hi Mara, firstly; what were your early years like, when did you discover your love for music and what early influences do you think shaped you into the person you are today?

Hi Jessica. I started going to electronic music events from about 14 years of age (yes you could do that in Romania at the time) and immediately fell in love. I grew up to the sounds of drum and bass, techno, dubstep, and loved something about all of the genres. My heart belongs to techno because it’s such a vast genre and contains elements from everywhere, hence I find it fascinating.

When did you first try mixing, what was the set up and what made you want to try?

I first tried mixing about 6 years ago and it was on Traktor. I didn’t like it. I’ve been wanting to mix for a long time but just didn’t get the feel for it with Traktor so I stopped doing it and then got back into it about 2 years ago years ago when I got CDJs and soon after I bought Technics.

What was the first record/tune you bought? Which artists inspire you now?

To be completely honest, I don’t remember the first tune I bought.. Now I’m heavily inspired by artists that have a unique sound and merge experimental and psychedelic sounds in techno, like Aleksi Perala, Etapp Kyle, Ron Costa, R-Zone..

How would you describe your style?

I’d describe my sound as Experimental, dark, hypnotic, unpredictable.

What do you think makes a good DJ?

Spontaneous and unpredictable while still having a style, so people know what their sound is like but they can still impress the crowd with every mix. That’s what I love about my favourite artists.

What is it about techno and electronic music that draws you to it?

I love electronic music because I think it’s the music of the moment, we’re in the digital era and the music is just reflecting that. Techno I adore because it’s limitless. You can listen to 3 tracks that all sound completely different but they are all classified as techno. You hardly find this in another genre, they usually have quite a defined sound, whereas techno is so unique.

You are a co-promoter of the London based techno events company Pantheon. Tell us about this?

We launched Pantheon this year with a vision to bring together artists that have a more dark, experimental and psychedelic sound. We’ve got a lot planed so keep an eye out!

Tell us about you as a person, how do you think your friends would describe you?

Well I guess there’s like two sides to me; one is the responsible hard working, very driven and family persona, and then there’s the party side of me. A bit crazy, loves to have fun and party hard. I enjoy both and am a professional in both worlds.

What would you say is your guilty pleasure in life?

Hmm.. comedy shows and Lana del Rey

If you could change one rule or law forever, what would it be and why?

I wish they wouldn’t stop the illegal raves. I love watching documentaries and hearing stories about illegal raves back in the day. I’ve been to quite a few and had some bad experiences with police who have arrived to stop them - it can be very annoying. Especially when the parties are being held in locations where they aren’t disturbing anyone.

You are playing at your upcoming event Pantheon Presents: Boomtown Warm Up Party at Electric Brixton on 8 June 2018 and also at Boomtown Festival itself. What do you and the Pantheon brand have in store for us?

Well we’ve got the incredible Charlotte de Witte, Extrawelt and Aleksi Perala playing in London, among many others. We have the amazing Enrico Sangiuliano as well at the Boomtown Festival plus loads more to be revealed very soon! We’re hosting a techno day on the Sunday at Boomtown for the first time ever, which is very very exciting.

Lastly, what else do you have lined up for 2018 and what else do you hope 2018 brings for you?

I plan to be working a lot on Pantheon in order to develop and grow the brand. For myself I’ll concentrate on improving my skills, spending a lot of time on the turntables practicing and also I just started producing, so there’s lots to learn there too. Definitely work hard, play hard!

Mara – thank you for taking the time to do this interview – see you on June 8th! xx
