Taking things to Xtreme: an interview with Miss XS

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 24-05-05 01:22

With a recent signing to the XtremeUK DJ agency, upcoming gigs in China, USA, Australia, Germany and Ibiza and a tune released on famed hardstyle label IMP, Miss XS has been a busy lady.

As HF regulars will know Miss XS posts on here frequently. Always keen to share her success, get feedback on her tunes and collaborate with others, her enthusiasm for dj’ing music across a variety of styles and productions is infectious and she’s a nice girl to boot! After meeting Claire last year when she was making a tune with Dan Dyson down my way, I’ve followed her progress with interest and am now thrilled to see her starting to get the recognition she truly deserves for her efforts. I took some time to catch up with Miss XS to find out more...

I know it’s a clichéd first question, but as it’s your first for Harderfaster let’s start at the beginning: how did you get into dj’ing and who were your inspirations?

I got into it basically for something to do to start with. I'd a sports injury that stopped me doing anything at a decent level and my mate's brother had decks. I thought it was cool but never touched his as I didn’t want to break them. I got my own decks – kam bdx 280s – and then started mixing. To start with I did house and garage, the more commercial stuff that was around at that time – zed bias etc that kind of thing and Dj Ez really inspired me to push what I did. Then a year on someone introduced me to hard dance and I fell in love with djs like Anne Savage, Andy Farley, The Tidy Boys all being big inspirations and it has grown from there. Now I’m playing hard dance, hard style, bouncy hard dance, a mixed variety of house and branching into a bit of trance too.

You’ve recently been signed to the XtremeUK DJ agency, how did that come about and what‘ve they got in store for you?

I got a phone call asking if I’d like to join them – they are invite only so it’s great to be asked. After a bit of thought and a few phone calls with them I met them and signed up. I have a lot of tours lined up, Australia, USA, China plus much more in the pipeline which I’m really looking forward to. It’s giving me a chance to show people what I can do with all my styles.

Wow, that sounds like some pretty cool stuff!!! This isn’t the first time you’ve played abroad though is it?

No, I have been to Greece and Dubai already, which were both great, although Dubai stands out because it was an amazing out door stage, with a fake dance floor packed with clubbers being rained on with a sprinkler system. The heat was amazing especially on stage but it was worth it – they are so up for it there. I’m also playing Charlys Angels in Ibiza this year, as I’m going there for a holiday and was lucky enough to get a chance to play Charlys which I definitely wasn’t going to turn down!

So for those of us not able to travel to catch you in the more exotic locations what do you have lined up for us UK wise?

3rd June – 30 min guest mix on (www.ramair.co.uk) With Dave r & DJ Tricky www.connectedharddance.co.uk between 8:30 and 9pm
3rd June - I’m at Squelcher, SEOne, London (masked ball so bring a mask)
4th June - Cyberkitten LAUNCH @ The Empire, Milton Keynes (it's free so no excuse not to be there!)
11th June - I’m at Elevation, t2, turnmills, london (my ressie)
2nd July - Elevation again
4th July - I’m dj’ing for my sponsors @ Club Panitiles (date could change)
23rd July - Elevation with a funky flavour
14th August - Elevation
20th August - I’m playing for Creation in Abersoch in Wales
18th or 19th - November is the Children in Need event by Trancendance in London

Miss XS at her residency: Elevation

Let’s talk about tunage. You’ve recently had a tune (Trick) signed to Dutch hardstyle label IMP (http://www.juno.co.uk/products/172561-01.htm). I also have an amazing unsigned tune by you and Steve Gillen – “Call it what U will” that I LOVE (note to all record labels WHY has this bad boy not been signed?!?!) How long have you been producing? Was “Trick” you’re first signing?

Almost a year properly. I had messed with Fruity on my ex boyfriends PC while I was at uni but I got down to it when I got back and brought the program for myself. I’m loving the chance to learn new things all the time and to get the ideas out of my head and into a tune I can play in my sets. I have a few slightly old tunes available on Soundclick as well as a tune which was part of the HarderFaster Unsigned project and is up on http://www.trackitdown.net. I like to make a variety of tunes from hard dance to hardstyle and they always seem to reflect my mood. My tune called “this ride” I’m hoping with be the next signing so watch this space.

Also I’m working on a tune with my friend Zimma and we hope to have that in people's boxes soon – it's becoming a nice slab of hard dance mayhem and it’s a joy to work with someone as like minded as myself.

What influences you when you produce?

I normally go on mood – if I’m happy I end up making fluffy stuff, if I have had a bad day its evil stuff. I listen to a lot of music but producers like Gaz West, Wid and Ben, Paul Glazby and Adz really stand out for me and I hope one day I can create tunes like they to that really get the energy going

You’ve been heavily involved in Internet radio, tell us a bit about where you’ve played and where we can catch you online these days?

After doing pirate radio when I first started in Derby, I thought it safer to do net radio and I used to do 7 different internet stations, but that got a bit to hectic for me although it was fun. I used to play on www.tranceairwaves.com, www.risefm.com, www.selectaradio.com, www.newtechpirates.com and more. Now I just play on www.selectaradio.com every Thursday night from 9pm till 11pm GMT – it goes out worldwide so we get a wide audience range due to the time. You can also see me on the webcam when I get mine fully working so you can see me in action in my room mixing it up for the listeners. Selecta also do a few club nights as well which is a great way for the selecta dj’s to show their skills in a club and meet up and have fun.

Vinyl vs CD? What’s your thoughts and preferences?
I love vinyl but due to the cost and the weight I prefer to use cd. I can also play my own tunes or my friend's tunes out in my sets without having to pay loads to get them pressed. I do miss the hands on feel you get with vinyl but I love the versatility you have with cds these days. It’s a lot easier to carry more tunes with you as well with cds. No more shoulder pain!

If you could pick anyone to do a B2B with who would it be and why?

This is a tough one, there's so many good djs out there I'd like to get in the booth with, but I have always been a fan of PVD and I think if I had a chance I’d love to get into the booth with him and have a b2b session. He is a master on and off the decks and I have admired him since seeing him at Gatecrasher Summer Sound System.

Interesting (but cool!) not a dj I thought you would pick. So what tunes have rocked your world this year?

The year tune wise is still young but so far I’m loving – Adz+Greg TateWays of the Dealer – which I don’t think is out yet but I’m lucky to have a promo copy and its going down a storm in clubs. Wid and BenFight Yourself, is another storming tune that I almost always try and fit into my hard sets. And Andy WhitbyFeersum, a monster of a tune that is so evil it’s amazing.

Not forgetting the new producers coming through like Steve Gillen, Dan Dyson, MDA & Spherical and all the others climbing quickly through the ranks with storming tunes. I wish them all the best for the rest of the year and I shall enjoy playing what they come up with next.

So what do you like to do in your spare time – do you have spare time?

I'm happy to not get much spare time at the moment because it means things are going well, but when I do get some other than spending time with family, my boyfriend and my friends. I like to go snowboarding (with boyfriend, sister and her friend) and no I'm not very good but it's such fun. I do taekwondo with my sister, I restarted so that we can do it together – it’s a great way of keeping fit. On the odd occasion I go go-karting (never say women can’t drive, makes us want to beat you). And the usual cinema, meals and nights in.

Miss XS in Dubai

And finally a few quick fire questions…

What CD are you listening to at the moment?

None it's too late at night but last one was my Greenday – Dookie album (I'm seeing them in June, yay!)

Tea or coffee?

Neither I don’t drink hot drinks my mouth is too sensitive.

Favourite movie?

Enter the dragon a wicked Bruce Lee film although I heard that ONG BAK is one to rival it so I shall wait and see.

Indian or Chinese?

Chinese

Favourite book?

I don’t read much but I love Harry Potter books. I'm awaiting the 6th one to come out.

And if anyone wants to buy you a drink (we all know dj’ing is thirsty work!), what should they get you from the bar?

Just a can of coke. When I'm working I tend not to drink and half the time I'm driving back the same night is like to stay off the heavy stuff.

Thanks for taking the time to chat!

Miss XS is a thoroughly lovely lady. She must be doing something right. With 6,000+ profile hits on HF she is the most "viewed" female DJ in the profile chart. What with worldwide interest and her production career coming along nicely she's got a lot to be proud of and to look forward to. Watch this space Smile
