Are Chris & Matt Kidding?

Chris and Matt Kidd are two of the hottest young producers in the North of England today. Hailing from York this brotherly duo have been busy relentlessly dropping bombs in the studio ever since their debut release in 2006, including the now legendary Control on Dave Joy’s Joyride label. Since then they’ve been rocking it in more ways than one, so before their first ever London gig at the Magnetix Beach Party on July 31st, Dean Zone was sent to see just what the kids are into these days…
Where did your love affair with dance music start and did one of you have to get the other one into it?
We have both always loved dance music and got into it at a very early age due to our older brother who is heavily into breaks. I probably got Chris into trance and took him to Gatecrasher at the tender age of 16. How he got through the door I will never know, he still has a baby face at 24. It was Chris that first took the plunge and bought a mixer, turntables, headphones and a few vinyl’s; I then had a go and as every DJ will know there’s no turning back. We were both hooked instantly!
Define your sound from how it first started to how it is now and, if possible, how this evolution occurred?
We first started playing hard trance and did for a long time taking inspiration from Scot Project, DJ Wag, S.H.O.K.K. and Yoji. We had a couple of releases on Joyride Recordings, played some great gigs for Goodgreef, Garlands and hosted a successful radio show on DI.fm. It was doing the show we started to experiment with more tech and started to enjoy the techier sound over the harder one. We decided to stop the show, which evolved into a complete break from our original music. It was in this period we agreed a combination of tech-trance and techno would be our future, but our sound is still pumping with lots of energy, pounding kick drums and powerful bass lines!! (Sounds like we are describing our old sound when we put it like that, haha) You can find links to our latest mixes on our myspace page.
Right, time to geek out. How long have you been producing for and what have you got in the studio?
We first started experimenting with production in 2003 but it was in 2004 when Matt and I moved in together. We built a studio in the spare room and started to take it slightly more seriously. Mainly using hardware synths, the Virus C was our weapon of choice. We had a Mac running Cubase rewired with Reason and too many VST’s to mention but a particular favourite was and still is the V-Station. When we took timeout from music we moved house and lost the spare room. That forced us into selling the gear so we now use Activa’s studio and have him as our engineer. We now have Ableton on our laptops to put ideas down when away from the studio but we do miss having access to a studio and will look to build one again once we have a spare room.
As you’ve mentioned, you spent a lot of time in the studio with Activa, another hot talent in the trance scene. How did you first hook up and what is he like to work with?
We were introduced to Rob (Activa) through a mutual friend in our early clubbing days. We ended up becoming good friends clubbing most weekends and supporting each other at as many gigs as possible. We never really planned to get in the studio together but one evening we were drinking and ended up in our studio and Substate – Horizon was written. It took some sober follow up sessions to finish it.
Rob is a gifted producer and DJ and we have learnt a great deal from him. It’s pleasing and exciting to see a great friend go on to such good things, if not a little jealous that he’s getting bookings in Buenos Aires and Sydney now.
Your debut solo release Control was one of my favourite tracks of 2006. Do you have any plans for releases in a similar, harder style, or will you be sticking to the techier stuff indefinitely?
No more of the harder stuff from us just tech-trance and techno, but the Obsessive/Compulsive EP is still tough and should fit in with harder style DJs.
What was it like being asked to sign for Discover, one of the most respected and well known labels in Trance?
We are extremely proud to be on such a respected label and one that has a lot of power within the industry. In addition, to have tracks alongside renowned artists such as Sean Tyas and John O’Callaghan is incredible. If we could achieve half they have achieved we would be thrilled.
Ever have brotherly arguments in the studio or when playing out?
Constantly! Our Mum doesn’t understand how we manage, we can argue for hours over whose turn it is to make a cup of tea!
What would you say is your biggest achievement to date, and what goals have you set yourselves for the future?
We couldn’t pinpoint that one event or release but something that does excite us is to find a play list with one of our tracks in. Doesn’t matter if it’s a headline DJ or someone just mixing for fun, it’s just a great feeling to see our music getting supported and spread throughout the world. We have never really set goals but the one thing we are aiming for is more gigs. Our style is no longer suited to some of the nights we once played so we haven’t been playing out as much.
How is the release and gig schedule looking right now?
Our latest single Cherry Picker hit the shops five weeks ago and our first EP Obsessive/Compulsive is due out on Discover Dark next month. Both tracks are getting great support with Compulsive featuring on this year’s Trance Energy compilation. The new collaboration with Activa titled U.R. is due to be released in July complete with Stoneface & Terminal and John Askew remixes. We have just completed a remix of Mark Andrez – Another Angel for Matt Hardwick’s label Kill The Lights, which shows off our tranicer side and we are back in the studio working on our follow up EP for Discover Dark, which is about 60% done as well as some trancier originals. Fingers crossed the hard work we are putting into the studio will result in more gig opportunities
You’re headlining at the Magnetix Beach Party on Friday 31st July, yet I hear this is your first time playing in our nation’s capital city? Is this true, and if so, why do you think this the case?
It’s true so we are massively looking forward to it and really want to make a good impression. Not sure why we have never been booked to play in London but let hope it’s the first of many!!
So, what can the Magnetix faithful expect from the pair of you on the evening?
We don’t like to give too much away but we will be aiming to create an energetic vibe of tech-trance and techno.

With the exploits of our May event still fresh in the mind and with what looks set to be a fantastic summer ahead of us, we thought we’d waste no time in tell you all about our next party, the Magnetix Beach Party!
For this very special event we’re going to go all out to turn Club 414 into as much of a beach as possible to create that unique Magnetix vibe. With our second to none décor and up for it crowd we think this will be a night to remember, so much so that anyone wearing beachy attire will get £8 entry to the
club all night (no Speedos though please gents!)
Headling is Chris & Matt Kidd, two super hot DJ/Producer brothers from York who quite literally have the world at their feet. After tasting lots of early production success they have gone on to establish themselves as one of the UK’s fastest rising acts. Recently the pair have been signed to John Askews
“Discover” label which will further catapult their already impressive careers into the stratosphere. Seemingly ignored by London promoters for reasons unknown, we are very proud to be able to bring them down for their London debut!
DiabloTraxx Collective member Rob OTT is our next guest. Famed for their live PA’s which have taken them around the globe with Rob as their driving force, he has worked with just about everyone worth mentioning in the scene and commands respect wherever he goes, and with productions coming out of
his studio literally every week, we’re glad to have Rob show us what he is all about.
Taking our guest slot for some mouth-watering, feet stomping, twisted psychedelic craziness is Mif, the multi-talented DJ/producer and label manager of Mutagen Records. He’ll joining us fresh off the plane from Poland’s Common Festival, and having recently collaborated with some of the scene’s leading figures such as Sinewave and Sutekh, it’ll be clear why Mif is having no trouble establishing himself and his label on the international psy trance circuit.
Last but by no means least we have 2 of the finest talents to ever emerge from Wales in SHOCK:FORCE. Consisting of acclaimed producer Sully and DJ Matt Thomas, SHOCK:FORCE have taken the Hard Trance scene by storm in less than a year, with remixes of classics such as Jetlag and Expander taking their productions over the airwaves of Radio 1 as tracks signed to Dave Joy’s Joyride imprint, it’s fair to say that these two are making the right noises and moving in the right direction as we welcome them for only their second London set!
Of course no Magnetix would be the same without our fantastic residents Phil Lankester AKA Libra 9, Dean Zone, Andy Forse, Timmy Whiz, Kevster, Lorenzo "Tequila" Barrero and Barry Harding!
As per usual we’ll have 50 copies of the latest Magnetix Promo CD, with Vol. 7 this time being mixed by our very own Dean Zone.
