Awards, Midget Waiters and Bin Raiding with Nick the Kid

Kids these days, nothing but trouble. So all the old people will attest to anyway. As for those young enough to still consider clubbing as good a thing as any to do on Friday and Saturday nights, well, I think it’s fair to assume that nobody wants to grow up too fast. And I think it’s also fair to say that South West DJ and HDA Regional Hero Nick the Kid is certainly one of these.
Having been in the scene in one way or another for longer than most of us but still harbouring the kind of passion that you would expect from someone just starting out on their raving career, Nick serves as a refreshing reminder of what it’s all about, and why so many people DJ, produce and promote. Hoping to harness some of this boundless energy for myself, I went off in search of the Hindsight promoter before his debut set at Magnetix to see just what makes him tick… And feel the need to raid bins, obviously!
Hi Nick, how are you? Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, where you’re from and what you’re all about please?
Hey Dean, I’m very good thank you! Right, for those that don’t know, I come from Southwest England and have been flying the flag for European hard trance down here for around 10 years now with my Hindsight events, DJ sets and productions. Over the years I have played for the likes of Slammin’ Vinyl, Frantic, The Country Club, Dance Academy, Freeformation, Bionic, Tranzaction, Diztruxshon amongst others and also had numerous releases on labels such as Drizzly (Germany), Joyride (Switzerland), Dataless (UK), Nutty Trance (UK) & Hindsight (UK).
Who or what are your influences and how do they affect your DJing and production?
Over the years I’ve been influenced by too many people to mention but in the early days it was definitely The Prodigy, Carl Cox and the old Dance Planet tapes that switched me on to the underground dance scene. Seeing Mark EG for the first time in 1997 was definitely a big turning point for me as well, the music he was playing back then was inspirational and the enthusiasm that went with it just blew me away.
In terms of production I’m really feeling Andrea Montorsi, Luca Antolini, DJ Wragg, Log:One, Jon The Baptist, Chuck E and Louk. I strive to make my productions stand up to these guys. With regards to DJing there’s nothing worse than watching a miserable, lifeless DJ, even if their mixing is faultless. On this basis you simply can’t fault Mark EG, Ed Real or Cally and Juice for their amazing ability to balance professionalism as well as all the craziness and fun of their DJ sets. I look up to them all for this quality.
Why Nick the Kid? Are you still 15 or something and have you had any other DJ names before you settled on that one?
When I was about 15 I was invited to play at the legendary Pawlett Manor nightclub for Chapter 33, which was an over 18’s rave by the way. I needed a name for the flyer and was struggling to come up with something. My mates at the time voted on it due to my age and it has stuck ever since! Obviously there have been some adaptations over the years by the closer of my friends (and my worst enemies, ha-ha!) and yes I did go under a different name prior to this but hopefully it will never come out! You won’t get it from me!
We’ll see. There are more than enough DJs with the “Kidd” moniker – Alex Kidd and Kidd Kaos spring instantly to mind, along with Chris and Matt Kidd and even Zeebra Kid. Are you related, or is the issue being taken up in the courts as we speak?
As far as I’m aware we are not related, but yes you are right there seems to be more and more people adopting the tag. It’s no biggie as there are just so many DJs these days I suppose it’s just getting harder to come up with something new that hasn’t already been used. I’ve even heard of people having exact counterparts for their own names more recently. I’ve held the name Nick the Kid for 11 years now since 1998 as you can see from the flyer below.
Lets talk about your music. You’re productions seem to be very sporadic. You don’t use an engineer, so why does there always seem to be such a length of time between productions and remixes?
The reason is simple; it’s all down to time really. As I am sole promoter for Hindsight, DJ out most weekends, work four days a week and have a long term girlfriend, production / studio always has to fit in around this. Hopefully I will get more hands on time over 2009 and get the releases coming through more consistently but at the same time I like to deliver my best results so never rush to finish projects either.
However, I’m currently working on a few tracks that will be out very soon including a collaboration with FJ Project called “Acid Storm” which I am very pleased with, and also I’m currently remixing the awesome trance classic Deliverance by K90 for his Urban Anthems Remixed album. Eventually I can definitely see myself moving away from the events to concentrate more on the studio side of things, I really enjoy it!
There was a seemingly random foray into electro for you with your Getting Harder track with Lee H. Is there more to come from this side of you or was it just a one off?
Yes definitely I hope so, as anyone who knows me will tell you I’ve always been into various styles of music whether it be old skool hardcore, trance, tech house or electro.
I regularly play funkier sets for the likes of Ripsnorter (Bristol), Used Goods (Exeter) & Bohemia (Torquay) and I am loving the whole electro / fidget sound right now from people like Miles Dyson, Lee Mortimer and Mickey Slim. Their productions are seriously fat! Time dependant I’d love to get involved in producing more stuff like this as it’s fun to make. Getting Harder also did extremely well and made it onto a fair few compilations and charted really high which pleasantly surprised me, so watch this space!
What equipment is your studio packing and what’s your favourite bit of kit and why?
My studio consists of an Athlon Dual Core PC, Oxygen 61 controller, Alesis Monitors, Behringer desk, two CDJ1000’s, DJM800 mixer and the rest is software. My favourite bit of kit at the moment is probably the Novation V-Station as I use it in every single one of my tracks. With a few FX and tweaking you can always get something useable from it. It’s a great VST. Oh and also the Waves Bundle! I couldn’t do without that.
Lets talk about your recent success at the Hard Dance Awards, where you took home the regional hero award. Has winning this changed anything at all? Are you getting more bookings/recognition as a result? Do you have midget waiters who bring you coke on a tray for breakfast, or is it still business as usual?
Winning the award was an amazing experience and has brought with it a lot of exposure which I’m really thankful for. Being interviewed by Kutski for Radio 1 was definitely a new experience for me, John is an absolute legend and seeing my remix of Colours – Skysurfer on the associated Euphoria album gave me a great sense of achievement too.
2009 is looking like one of the busiest years of my career to date with bookings already for Ibizan Heat, Riot at Ministry Of Sound, Frantic, Tranzaction, Atmosphere, Resonate, and Uprising amongst others. So on the whole I think it’s had a very positive effect on things and I’m extremely grateful to everyone who voted for me. Midget waiters? Which DJ’s have those? I need to know! Are they in the yellow pages?
Excluding bribery, why do you think you won the regional hero award at the HDA’s?
Winning the award took me by complete surprise if I’m honest, the competition for that category was pretty fierce and on my way to Leeds I had no idea of how it was going to turn out! I campaigned like I’m sure most people did and was overwhelmed with the amount of support I got, especially from the South West.
You’ve been getting a fair few bookings down London way recently too, most recently for DHF, Frantic and even Riot. Is this the first part of your plan for UK dominance?
Yes you’re right, recently I’ve been up and down the M4 like a yoyo, it’s been great! My first bookings in the capital were for Freeformation and I had an awesome time at every one and it’s cool to be getting invited to some of the other leading hard dance parties. I’ve met a fair few London friends as a result and hopefully London will make a regular appearance in my diary!
Whilst we’re talking about Riot, what’s this I hear about a compilation album that you’re involved in with them?
Well, Louk and I have been asked by Scott Atrill to mix Volume One of a new album series entitled We Love Traffic. We’ve been asked to pick our favourite tracks from the label, both old and new which we are both really excited about. There are some absolute classics to choose from and after a few heated discussions on MSN we have whittled it down to what we consider the most rocking Traffic releases!
The album should be in the shops late summer / early autumn.
Your self built Hindsight brand has spawned a record label as well as a very successful club night. If you had to choose between being a label owner, DJ, Producer or a promoter, which would it be and why?
That’s a good question Dean. There are certain aspects of all that I love and likewise there are certain aspects of each that drive me nuts. It’s hard to choose but if I had to it would be DJing as this is what first brought me into contact with all the other things and I suppose it’s the backbone of what I do. Nothing beats that feeling you get from an amazing gig when it all comes together! As I stated above though I can see myself taking more of a back seat further down the line to concentrate more on production but that won’t be for a good few years yet. I’m still having too much fun playing out and meeting new people!
Under your direction Hindsight has become one of the top hard dance parties in the country. What is your secret to successful promoting?
I have always taken an active, hands on approach with everything associated with our events. I pretty much do everything myself including designing flyers, booking DJ’s, updating websites and even to this day after 13 years you can still find me walking the streets with a box of flyers in one arm, posters / bucket in the other and an angry Civil Servant trying to keep up, ha-ha!
Obviously there are other factors to Hindsight’s success but good old fashioned hard work does pay off. I think these days there a lot of promoters who are trying to project an image of themselves and seem to forget that being a promoter actually involves promoting, not just walking around telling everyone they are running a night. When I started out the internet just wasn’t there and in the early days I didn’t even have a mobile phone but we still managed to get the word out and had some of our busiest events. Obviously things like Harderfaster.net, Dontstayin.com and Facebook have made life a lot easier, and the internet in general.
Continuing with Hindsight, you’ve got the 10th Birthday this year and you’re taking it to the white isle for a stint. Tell me more about these exciting times!
Yes Hindsight will be 10 years old this November and I’m seriously putting my back into it for this one, I really want this to be the biggest event out of everything we’ve done as it’s such an important occasion. I can’t really say anymore than that at the moment but expect the unexpected on a large scale.
On Ibiza, we will be taking Hindsight over for the Ibizan Heat week 20th June – 27th June. This is a first of its kind trip for Hindsight, we already have a large group of people in attendance alongside all the Tranzaction, Concept and Sunddessential nutters so it looks set to be an amazing week. There will be parties and events at the legendary Zoo, Es Paradis, Privilege, Judgement Sundays (pre party) as well as boat parties and daytime sessions at Kanya. I also have an amazing gig lined up whilst I am there which I’m not allowed to talk about at the minute but I am extremely excited about it as it’s one of the biggest nights on the Island. If my last visits to Ibiza are anything to go by I’m going to need a month off work when I return. I can’t wait. I absolutely love the place.
So, you’re making your making your Magnetix debut at Club 414 on Friday 29th May. What do you have in store for us and why should people come?
Expect some seriously upfront hard trance, underground acid tunes and me in a bin at 7am chewing my face off (If my last visit to London is anything to go by anyway). So if you don’t like my tunes you can just laugh at me at the end of the night. Looking forward to having a real session with the Magnetix crew, see you at the after party!

As the days start getting longer, the mercury rises out of the minus degrees for seemingly the first time in ages and the fact that it doesn’t seem to be raining 24/7 can mean only one thing. It’s Spring, and nearly time for another fantastic Magnetix party!

Magnetix @ Club 414 – Fri 29th May 09
One name that is sure to stir up excitement amongst psytrance lovers, producers, and DJ’s alike; all of whom eagerly anticipate his every release or live performance, is SINEWAVE. Currently riding high in the psychedelic scene here and abroad, his live act signed to Mutagen Records and releases on high profile labels such as Geomagnetic and Neurobiotic, he has been carving a reputation as one of the scenes most promising talents; whipping up a frenzy at The Waveform Festival, Wonky Disco and a host of big parties. SINEWAVE will be sure to bring his unique blend of heart throbbing basslines fused with hypnotic psychedelia, and leave Magnetix in a state of furore.
Not content with bringing the live talents of Sinewave down, we’ve also enlisted the help of Beyond/Excessive Pressure head honcho and all round rising Trance star Steve Allen, who will also be making his Magnetix debut. If being involved in the creation of 4 labels so far in his relatively short career is not enough, this mans productions have the backing of just about every superstar DJ there is in Trance. And when his tunes aren’t getting rinsed by the likes of Tiesto and Armin, he’s busy playing on the same bill as the Paul van Dyk’s too! We’re also proud to present one of the recent winners from the Hard Dance Awards: Nick the Kid. After rightfully home the Regional Hero award, Nick has continued his relentless charge on the scene, with recent single “Enigma” charting in just about every download store worth mentioning as well as Radio 1 airplay, this is certainly one Kid to look out for in the future, and another making his 414 and Magnetix debut!
Finally we have Kito, our last guest for the evening. Kito has been rocking the underground scene with a multitude of parties such as Carnage, Oneness and Tribal Dance at the Medussa club for a while now. Kito is also no stranger to the 414, holding a residency at Spin as well as Fridge based Colours. A very versatile DJ who could easily fill any timeslot and still fit in with our strict music policy meant he was always going to feature for us at some point, the only question was when!
Backing up our strongest line up to date is the ever ready Magnetix residents, Phil Lankester aka Libra 9, Dean Zone and Andy Forse.
As per usual we’ll have 50 copies of the latest Magnetix Promo CD, with Vol. 6 this time being mixed by our very own Andy Forse.
