MYNC Project go under the spotlight for Push Sunday Sessions

One of the resounding successes in the UK house music scene in recent years, MYNC Project have gone from backroom heroes at Coalville's legendary Passion (supplying funky house beats alongside the main room's euphoric trance action) to global dance music superstars. Amassing a loyal following at The Emporium helped to establish their name, and once their calibre was known on a local basis, word started to get around that they were a little bit tasty. Now with their 4-deck sets and their increasingly diverse sound, they are hotter than ever.
They have also embarked on what looks to be a promising production career, with notable releases on Cr2 smashing clubs across the globe. They’ve mixed world-beating compilations such as the excellent United Nations of House double CD, and have hosted their own MYNC Sessions nights at clubs like Godskitchen. Clearly, they’re busy lads then with an appetite to keep getting bigger and better. They will be forgoing their usual Sunday activities this weekend as they roll on down to The Whitehouse in Clapham to show the crowd at Push just what they are all about. Seeing these guys in action is a hot ticket indeed to end your weekend in style, just don’t ask them to get you any drinks...

How did you two meet originally?
Mark worked in a record store called Ainley’s in Leicester, I used to go in and buy records from him, found out we lived on the same street and started hanging out.
How long after you met did you start mixing together?
We played back to back at a few gigs. It was in ‘99 that we formed MYNC Project.
Your DJing career kicked off at the legendary Passion at The Emporium in Coalville. How did this all come about? Were you clubbing there before you were DJing there?
I was a student at Preston Uni, Mark was resident at Luxor in Leicester. I came back to Leicester and got a weekly resident at Passion in ‘96. I’d been to the club a couple of times before. I was amazed, and still am at how a town like Coalville could host such a huge club night!
Do you feel your style has changed much over the years, with regards to the type of sounds you play?
Definitely, our sound was a lot more vocal house back at the start. Our sound has become a lot more underground, electronic and big room.
Your 4 decks, 2 mixers show… how does this work? I’ve tried it before and it can be quite tricky!
Not sure, we never really rehearse, we find you lose the spontaneity. It’s a case of communicating while DJing and listening to each others’ records before gigs, and knowing your own.
Which other DJs who do something a little extra-ordinary do you rate? There’s so many possibilities for exciting sets these days…
Soulwax/2manydjs, Paul Woolford, Yousef, Erol Alkan, Switch… the use of Ableton has opened up so much creativity.
How has your production career been going? When was your first release and how did things progress from there?
Really well, our first release was a track called ‘The Session’ on Cr2 trax, we then remixed Danny Howell’s ‘Dusk till Dawn’. Both were received really well. We spent a lot of time in the studio in 2005, remixing Bush II Bush, G-Club and Mark Knight, and our own singles ‘Edge of Seventeen’ and ‘Something On Your Mind’ which is out in April through Apollo records. We also did a collaboration with Danny Rampling called ‘Strobelight’ which is an acid house track. Positiva are putting this out end of February.
When you go into the studio, do you always try and come up with something that will fit into your sets? Do you usually have specific style in mind?
We always make records that we want to play out. No style in particular, we always have ideas and if they work or we get a good vibe then we crack on and finish it.
February 12th will see you guys down at Push at The Whitehouse in Clapham — quite an intimate gig. Do you often get to play in such cosy little spaces? I can assure that the atmosphere is awesome in this one…
I’ve heard very good things about Push and we are really looking forward to playing there. Intimate gigs are where it’s at!
Do you spend a lot of time in London generally? Where do you go in town if you have some free time to kill?
We both live in Richmond, so we are here everyday. We normally hang out round the bars here. Clubs-wise we go to the Cross, Fabric, MOS. I spend a bit of time back in Leicester too.
Push a small scale, Sunday afternoon gig — how will you tailor your sound to fit the occasion?
We will see how the vibe is when we get there, and just follow from the previous DJs. Although we will leave the gabba records at home!
What’s the biggest track in your box right now? One that people are always asking about?
Probably the Switch remix of our single ‘Something on Your Mind’
What’s the weirdest thing anyone’s ever said to you while you’ve been DJing?
Can I have 2 cans of Red stripe and a water… the guy was that battered he thought he was at the bar!

The Sunday session everyone is talking about! PUSH returns February 12 with special guests MYNC Project. Mark Brown and Nick Corelli famously made a name for themselves when Erick Morillo invited them to make their first appearance at Ministry Of Sound for his Subliminal night. Over the past five years they have been sampling every form of house from the soulful-tipped groovers to dirty, party-wise, jackin' tracks while touring the world with Subliminal sessions in NYC, gigs in Las Vegas, Atlanta, Miami, Kuala Lumpur, Italy, all over the UK, Ibiza on the Space and Amnesia Terrace and for Ministry at Pacha as well Kylie Minogue's album launch party!
PUSH Sunday sessions are famous for serving up party music and these guys know how to tune select! Mark was A&R for Credence records (started in 2000) and was responsible for signing releases from some of the world's top producers - including Dirty Vegas, Part-T-One, Sneak, Alan Braxe, Green Velvet, Skylark (Nic Fanciulli & Andy Chatterly), Lee-Cabrera, Rune RK, Eric Prydz and more. He has single-handedly been responsible for signing only the best in house music and knocked-up over 25 top 40 UK singles - in a time when most house records are lucky to get into the top 100.
Famous just as much for their party antics (they were caught on the terrace dressed in bikinis at their Cream residency in Ibiza last summer!) MYNC Project can’t wait to party at the Sunday session that just keeps growing from the word of mouth and continues to play the new house heroes alongside the house legends of today.

I was the bar manager @ the emporium towards their final year at the club ! I would stand & watch mark and nick for hrs on end,these boys are not just DJs!. They have a completly unique style and have a brilliant understanding of how to structure their sets un-rehearsed !!! Would love to see them come back to the emporium !!!
