alllrighty then.. here's my issue - so far nothing i've found and no-one i've talked to has been much use, hopefully someone can help me out here

i've recently upgraded from a 1.4 gHz athlon with 512 Mb ram to a 3.2 gHz athlon XP with 1 Gb ram. to go with that i've put in a new motherboard with a faster FSB etc..

since the upgrade i am getting intermittent, "random" crashes whenever i try and do something on the pc. sometimes a certain action will cause a crash, sometimes it won't. but the pc doesnt crash if just left switched on with nothing but windows running.

i have already eliminated overheating and driver errors as a cause - i've even installed a fresh, brand new hard drive because i was getting lots of driver errors, but even on a clean install with no extra programmes it still crashes, i have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for all my hardware too..

the nature of the crashes is varied - usually the system just resets. sometimes the display goes black but with the whole system stil powered up and running (including the monitor), and occasionally the display will go black but with broken, coloured lines down the screen (red, green or blue).

doing the same action does not always produce the same type of crash.

one theory i am looking into is that my power supply isn't coping with the new shiny hardware and the voltages are dropping just enough to knock out the system without powering off - is this possible?

iam gong to try swapping out the new for the old parts but this might just disguise an underlying problem such as the power supply..?

i'm pretty computer literate but this has left me baffled Confused

any help at all would be much appreciated! Thumbs up

Still waiting on Intel's reply to the Dual Core Challange.

Stewie : Ok, now if a fax can i stay online and recieve the fax without a dedicated line?
Cuban Salesman : Yeah, you can put a piece of paper in here, and make like a phone call, and your friend will get another piece of paper with the same picture
Stewie : Can i possibly speak to someone who didn't come to this country on a floating door?

well spotted that man! just testing.. Clever Clogs i've been through allthe advanced settings in the bios and they seem in order, i will have another check next time i restart though..

gecko - why not? i've got a whole new motherboard to go with it, they are all compatible, shouldnt be an issue should it? Confused

kether - you say that with the confidence of someone who's seen something similar before.. i know the psu is quite often a culprit in sudden system failures but this is fairly unusual non?

you guys are quick btw! Thumbs up

Have a look here for a PSU calculator

The other thing I'd check is that you have all your drives in the right order on your IDE cables. I had a similar problem when I installed XP and tried to get 2 HDs on IDE0 and 2 DVDs on IDE1 working in parallel. It would just randomly reset itself for no apparent reason. I eventually got them all going at the same time, can't remember the exact config off the top of my head, but I think it's something like this:

On IDE0 you need to have your master drive at the END of the cable and your slave in the middle.

On your IDE1 you need your master in the MIDDLE and the slave at the end.

Try that!

I've only used a few athlon pc's and they've all had problems. Just personal preference on my part. Plus USB2 doesn't work so well with athlon chips
