Egorythmia goes Nocturnal with the release of his Album

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 11-12-17 18:41

Egorythmia aka Boban Lazovski has been storming the progressive psychedelic scene for almost ten years and prior to that, had his hand in multiple other acts! Remixing for legends like Ace Ventura, playing at awesome parties including Boom, Ozora and Universo Parallelo, and with a plethora of releases on the ‘cream of the crop’ labels - including: Iono, Iboga, Tech Safari & Perfecto Fluoro, I thought we were long overdue a catch up with Boban. When better to do it then than before the release on Iono Music of his debut album ‘Nocturnal’ on 12 December 2017!

Boban - you were born and bred in Skopje, Macedonia – tell us about your early years. What was it like growing up in Skopje? Were you musical as a child? When did your love for electronic music begin?

As a child, I was actually more involved in sports than I was with music. I was really into tennis until I was about 16 years old. However; as I got older my general love for sports faded and I fell for music and never looked back. Apart from tennis - which I kept playing for fun, even to this day. I love this sport. My first touch with electronic music was in the late 90s (when I was in my 20’s). Rave parties back then were something really new here, and my curiosity got the better of me…. After attending a few really spectacular parties and also some festivals - the music really began to resonate with me and I started following it closely.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Do you know, I can’t remember! But I recall the first Psy-Trance album I ever bought was “The Lone Deranger” by Hallucinogen. I loved it!

How old were you when you made your first ever track & what inspired you?

I think I made my first track around 2003-2004; I was 22 or 23 years old. And the first track I released under the project Egorythmia was back in 2008. I was very excited! That's as far as I can remember - haha!

I heard that you used to promote parties yourself – what parties & how did you find party promoting?

I was very interested in producing electronic music but it was really hard to find any kind of information - even on the internet - back then. So; I decided to start hosting some parties in the hope fellow producers would attend. And they did! I had found a way to meet likeminded people and also to exchange experiences with some good producers by promoting psy-trance parties.

What about parties and festival nowadays that you play at? Which are your favourites?

There are a lot of great festivals and parties around the world, but first on my list would be BOOM Festival. I’ve had the chance to play there twice and I hope for more...

When you make music – where do you take your inspiration from?

The inspiration takes me!

What’s your current studio set up and has it changed much over the years?

I find that I am constantly updating my studio; probably because the technology is ever-changing and improving… Actually, I recently bought my newest studio speakers which are Focal SM9. I am a big fan of Native Instruments.

Back home you like to support and promote upcoming unknown artists – tell us about some of these and what catches your eye with unknown artists? What qualities do you look for?

Yes! I really like to support young and talented artists. I’m particularly drawn to those with unique styles. Lately I have been working with Dual Resonance, Modual and Djantrix. All of them are from my home town which makes it extra special. I think they are all super talented and they have a lot to show to the world, so it makes me happy to help them do this. In fact, some of them are already performing at excellent psy-trance events, all around the world.

Are you into any other genres of music? If so; who are some of your favourite artists in these genres?

I like many different genres of music from electronic to world music, ethno, jazz… From minimal and techno sound I like artists such as Stephan Bodzin, Oscar Mulero, Adam Beyer, Boris Brejcha… Organic music by Coltrane, Majid Bekkas, Mulatu Astatke, Ali Farka, Rabih Abou Khalil…to name but a few!

You’re signed to the highly-respected Iono Music. How did this come about?

Quite simply, I sent Matthias (label boss at Iono) my demo and he liked it. I released my first ever EP on Iono Music way back in 2008 and we have been together ever since.

After releasing lots of tracks - over 200 EPs I believe - you are finally releasing your debut album on Iono Music on 12 December 2017. How exciting! Tell us about the album: the influences, the inspiration, the concept behind the album, your current sound….

Yes, I am finally releasing my debut album and concluding 10 year’s work on this project. The album “Nocturnal” is I think night time music, a long cold journey, with dark sinister atmospheres. It’s exciting indeed! I’m very very happy with it.

When you’re not making music or playing music what can we find you doing?

67% chance you’ll find me smoking a joint on the couch whilst probably reading political satirical tweets. When the time allows, I also love to travel for pleasure, experience new cultures and food of course. I particularly love Mediterranean countries for the temperament, the music and the food. I feel at home in these countries. But I am also drawn to cultures that are very different to where I’m from, and I would love to visit as many as I can.

What are some of your favourite cuisines in these places you’ve visited?

Hmm….I think my favourite cuisines would be Greek, Spanish and Mexican.

What musical ambitions and dreams do you have that you’d still like to achieve?

In the near future I plan to experiment with some other styles of music. There are a couple of on-going projects involving new sounds, I don’t want to give too much away right now but I will say some involve fusion with acoustic instruments...

Boban – thanks for giving us the time to do this interview and the best of luck with your album release! X

Thank you
